Zachary was a character mentioned in The Last of Us Part II. He was a member of the Seraphites who helped Washington Liberation Front (WLF) defector Emmett join his cult.[1]
Biography[]
At some point during the war with the Seraphites, Zachary encountered Emmett (then known as Gray) sometime after he had fled the WLF base in hopes of joining the Seraphites. The two formed an alliance and traveled together.[1] While crossing through the subway, Zachary and Emmett encountered a group of clickers, who chased them into one of the subway cars. While waiting for the clickers to leave, Zachary revealed he was planning on reaching Haven on the island and wanted Emmett to join him, to which Emmett agreed. Zachary then prayed the Seraphite Prophet's prayer, encouraging Emmett to pray with him, which Emmett did. He also taught Emmett the Seraphite phrase, "May she guide you".[2]
Later on, while traveling through the city and avoiding WLF patrols, Zachary revealed to Emmett the Seraphites perspective on the truce with the WLF breaking down. On the journey, Zachary's words convinced Emmett that it was actually the WLF who broke the truce, not the Seraphites.[3]
In time, the pair reached the coast, where Karen waited for them. Karen made them food and planned to sail them to the island the next day. However, two WLF soldiers attacked them, killing Karen and shooting Zachary in the arm. As Zachary lay helpless as the soldiers closed in, Emmett drew his pistol and shot the pair, saving Zachary's life. Zachary and Emmett then held a funeral for Karen and Zachary gave Emmett his new name, abandoning the name Gray entirely. He also helped Emmett shave his head and cut his face in the Seraphite tradition, now converting him into an official Seraphite.[4]
Before sailing to the island, Zachary and Emmett searched a nearby arcade for supplies. Inside, they encountered a bloater. Zachary protected Emmett, attacking the bloater with his hatchet but the bloater overpowered Zachary, killing him. Emmett fled the arcade and mourned Zachary's demise in a final letter before sailing to the Seraphites' island alone.[5]
