Emmett, formerly known as Gray, is a character mentioned in The Last of Us Part II. He was a Washington Liberation Front (WLF) defector who joined the Seraphites after becoming disillusioned with Isaac Dixon and the WLF's way of life.[1]

Biography[]

At some point after the outbreak of Cordyceps brain infection, Gray joined the WLF and fought as a soldier for them in their war against the Seraphites. During the war with the Seraphites, Gray began to detest Isaac and the WLF's way of life in the zone, particularly their torture of individuals who were against them. He arranged to flee the WLF base with his friend Jules. However, Jules did not leave with him. While traversing the city, he came across the Seraphite Zachary. The two formed an alliance and traveled together. He started leaving notes for Jules to find in case they changed their mind.[1][2]

While traversing the subway, Gray and Zachary encountered a group of clickers, forcing them to wait in one of the subway cars for them to pass. While there, Zachary revealed that he lived at Haven on the island and wanted Gray to join him; Gray agreed. Zachary also prayed the Seraphite Prophet's prayer, encouraging Gray to pray for the people he cared about. Gray began to grow faithful, liking the idea of a "greater someone" watching over them. He also adopted the Seraphite phrase "May she guide you".[2]

Gray and Zachary sneaked through the city, avoiding WLF patrols as best they could. Gray, in this time, came to believe it was actually the WLF who broke the truce, not the Seraphites. This only cements his belief that the WLF are corrupt, not the Seraphites.[3]

Gray and Zachary met up with Karen, another Seraphite, at an encampment by the coast. Gray viewed her a kind woman who cared for them and planed to sail them to Haven the next day. However, while conversing, two WLF soldiers attacked, with one shooting Karen dead and wounding Zachary in the arm. Gray realized the soldiers attacked them in an attempt to rescue him, having assumed he was the Seraphites' prisoner. In a fit of rage, Gray shot both WLF soldiers once they walked past him to kill Zachary. They held a funeral for Karen and it was then that Gray was given his new name, Emmett, by Zachary. He also shaved his head and cut his face in the Seraphite tradition.[4]

Zachary and Emmett decided to search the arcade for supplies before heading to Haven. Inside, they encountered a bloater. Zachary protected Emmett, attacking the bloater with his hatchet. However, the bloater killed Zachary; all Emmett could do was flee. Emmett mourned Zachary's death in a final letter to Jules before leaving for the Seraphites' island alone.[5]

Emmett eventually formally joined the Seraphites and went on patrol with them. He encountered a WLF lookout at a monorail, where he and his group killed the sniper Jensen, who was waiting for Misha to relieve him. Jensen recognized him and remarked that Emmett is a shell of his former self, by then looking and acting like a Seraphite.[6]
