She had family living in Lincoln in September, 2013. She was separated from her sister after the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak. Despite her sister's desires to move her family to be with her sister, this was not possible as the United States military were preventing unnecessary movement between towns to slow down the spread of infection. Between October 7 and 10, Karen died, which devastated her sister upon learning such.[1]
Events of The Last of Us Part I[]
During the summer of 2033, Joel can find the boy's diary that mentions Karen while making his way to the crashed military truck at Lincoln High School with Ellie and Bill.[2]
