The second season of the television series The Last of Us on HBO was officially announced on January 27, 2023,[3][4] and is set to premiere in 2025.[2] The season will adapt portions of the 2020 video game The Last of Us Part II[5] and will consist of seven episodes.[1]

Development[]

On January 25. 2023, Bella Ramsey, the actress for Ellie, teased that a second season was highly "likely".[13] On January 27, 2023, it was announced that the series had been renewed for a second season.[3][4]

Bella Ramsey also shared their excitement over the lesbian relationship storyline which is expected to take place in The Last of Us' second season.[14]

On February 7, 2023, Ian Alexander, who portrayed Lev from 2020's The Last of Us Part II, expressed interest in reprising their role of Lev for the second season of HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us.[15]

On March 13, 2023, it was confirmed that the storyline of The Last of Us Part II would cover multiple seasons of the HBO show according to Mazin and Druckmann. It was not revealed if this would mean two or three seasons, with Mazin stating "It's more than one season. You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct."[16]

On January 9, 2024, it was reported that Kaitlyn Dever was cast as Abby Anderson.[8] This was followed on January 10 by the announcement that Young Mazino was cast as Jesse.[7] The day after the casting of Isabela Merced as Dina was announced.[6] On February 2, Catherine O'Hara was cast in an undisclosed role.[9]

On March 1, 2024, Max announced the casting of Danny Ramirez, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle and Spencer Lord.[10]

On May 24, 2024, it was announced that Jeffrey Wright was cast as Isaac, reprising his role from the The Last of Us Part II.[11]

On June 5, 2024, in an interview with Deadline, Mazin and Druckmann confirmed the season will consist of seven episodes, one of which was set to be "quite big" in runtime. They added that a potential third season would be "significantly larger" and a fourth season may be required to continue the story.[1]
