Arnie was a survivor of the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak. He lived with his mother and grandmother, who they called "Abuela", in Santa Barbara. They were all Hispanic. They lived near the Rattlers in hiding, evading their attempts to capture them and make them slaves at their dome.
At some point around 2039, Arnie's mother and grandmother fell sick. Fearing for their safety, and believing the Rattlers would now easily find them, Arnie ran away in the night to approach the Rattlers. He believed if he offered to join them, he could convince the group to help his family and protect them from infected attacks.[1]

Ellie can come across a note mentioning Arnie and his family while searching for Abby Anderson.[2]
