Sam Howels is a character mentioned in The Last of Us Part II.[1] He was a resident of Seattle who lived in the city after the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak occurred.[2]

Biography[]

Background[]

Sam lived in Seattle in apartment 302 with James Cooper. When the Cordyceps brain infection led to FEDRA locking the city down in to a quarantine zone, the pair were left to fend for themselves as the United States military were not able to secure the entire city. Hearing that the apartments had fallen into chaos, with residents killing and stealing from one another, Sam and James decided to remain living where they were despite FEDRA advising all residents not currently within the QZ make their way towards the nearest checkpoint.

While living there, they encountered Heidi and Julia Kennedy, a mother and daughter who were living in the opposite apartment, 304. Sam baked them cornbread and left it for them, alongside a note explaining that he and James were safe, unlike the looters that had sprouted up elsewhere in the city. Julia, upon finding the note, left a reply and a bottle of vodka. Soon after, the three agreed to look out for one another, especially as Heidi, Julia's mother, was ill and in need of extra care.

The group lived in the apartment long enough that Seraphites started to move into the area and began terrorizing all those still living in the apartment complex. While Heidi was out scavenging, a group of three Seraphites snuck up on James and Sam on the roof and attacked them. James was killed in the skirmish but Sam managed to kill two of the group, scaring the remaining member away. Fearing the apartment was no longer safe, Sam packed his belongings. Before leaving, he left Julia the combination to his and James' safe, which he left supplies in for her to use. Sam left Julia another note, imploring her to flee from the apartment before more Seraphites returned and attacked them.[2]

Events of The Last of Us Part II[]

In April 2038, Abby Anderson can find a note in the apartment block where Sam and James lived that Sam and Julia wrote on.[1]
