Kari was a minor character who appeared in The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II. She was a Firefly surgical assistant that was going to assist Jerry with the operation to remove a mutated fungal growth from Ellie's brain, before being interrupted by Joel in their lab. This prevented a cure for the Cordyceps brain infection from being engineered.[1]

Background and early life[]
Little is know about Kari's early life, or if she was even born before the Cordyceps brain infection pandemic, except that she at some point joined the Fireflies and was capable of assisting with surgical procedures.[1]
Events of The Last of Us Part I[]
Kari is a medic for the Fireflies who resides in Salt Lake City at St. Mary's Hospital. She was going to assist with surgery on Ellie to find a cure for the Cordyceps brain infection. When Joel comes into the room to save Ellie, Kari backs away, crying out "doctor?" to Jerry Anderson, the surgeon.[2] After Joel kills Jerry, she screams "You fucking animal!" at Joel, before being told to shut up by the other remaining assistant.[1] As Joel leaves, Kari will cower on the floor, crying out that she does not wish to die.[fn 1][fn 2]
Behind the scenes[]
- Kari is the only non-infected female that can be killed during gameplay in the entire single-player story of The Last of Us Part I.
