Ride the Lightning is one of Ky Kiske's Overdrive Attacks, first introduced in the original Guilty Gear. It also served as such for Robo-Ky's before his revamp in Guilty Gear XX ♯Reload.

Sin Kiske has its own variant of this Overdrive, shortening its name to R.T.L (R・T・L, Āru Tī Eru?). It first appeared in Guilty Gear 2 -Overture-.

Overview[]

Ky[]

Ky shrouds himself in a sphere of electrical energy, then charges forward.

Between the original Guilty Gear and ACPR, four smaller orbs would circle around the bigger orb, but this would be discontinued as of Xrd, though the properties remain the same.

In Guilty Gear 2 -Overture-, Ky's variant instead takes on the purpose of being a very useful crowd-clearing tool that can eliminate a large group of servants, with a few practical combo routes (as opposed to a number of characters only having one or two).

Sin[]

Unlike Ky's parent version, Sin gets shrouded with red electricity.

In its debut in Overture, R.T.L. is a mixed purpose move, being composed of 3 aimable dashes which may hit many targets on each - but less than standard Ride The Lightning's, and each hit does less damage while only being able to strike a single target once, making it multipurpose, but less specialized.

The following games retain the 3-time dash property, starting with the Xrd series by using directional input and pressing Heavy Slash (or Dust if the Burst version is used). However, in Strive, Sin gains an additional follow-up by simply pressing Heavy Slash after any of the dashes, releasing a big blast of red electrical energy.

Details[]

In gameplay, Ky's Ride The Lightning is a general-purpose overdrive which is generally easy to combo into, given its functional hitbox, forward movement, and decently quick startup. Furthering its adaptability is its ability to be performed unimpeded in the air, though adept players may find higher damage routes from utilizing a Roman Cancel.

Trivia[]

  • The name of this attack is likely a reference to the Metallica album of the same name.
