Fafnir is one of Sol Badguy's Special Attacks, first appearing in Guilty Gear XX.

Overview[]

Sol moves in forward for a thrusting straight fierce flaming punch with his following fist, aimed at face-level. Despite its slow startup, it normally comes with throw-invulnerability.

In the Guilty Gear XX subseries via Λ Core, the Dust/Force Break version can be followed up by LeftRight + Dust (in ΛC)/RightLeft + Dust (in ΛC+R) as regular Sol - or LeftRight + Dust as EX Sol to lead into Tyrant Rave. In Plus R, the meterless Heavy Slash version returns for normal Sol only, with the ability to follow-up Tyrant Rave from either Fafnir.

A very powerful attack that also leaves Sol wide open if he misses (though is rather neutral on block). The attack can be used to knock back opponents into neutral, and can be repeated for extra damage if the opponent is in the corner. While it originally could not be chained into from normals, the Plus R version of the base Fafnir allows it to be chained-into from such, especially combo'ing off of his Heavy Slash normals. The Strive version of the attack can also guard crush.

Solely in Λ Core, Order-Sol also has a version of this attack (likely as a prototype, even if not specifically named so), which too also acts as a Force Break. However, unlike present Sol's version, it is performed instead as a turning backhanded sword-planting stab with Order-Sol leaning at a slanted angle forward (as his weapon is covered in a burst of flame). This version also massively differs in that it hits low, and launches the foe on hit. It is also one of his few attacks that does not involve the Charge gauge in any manner, and can even combo into itself a few times for decent damage should Order-Sol have enough meter left over.

Trivia[]

  • This attack's name comes from Fáfnir of Norse mythology, a son of Hreidmar who became a dragon after being affected by the curse of Andvari's ring and gold, then slain by Sigurd.
  • The punch's animation is derived off of the GGX version of his Tyrant Rave (the punch before the upwards-slinging flame burst), hence the reference to it via the Force Break versions of both Fafnir-into-Tyrant Rave.
    • Said punch animation is also part of the Lv. 2 and 3 second portions of Order-Sol's Tyrant Rave ver. Ω, as well as a flameless-stationary version acting as his far-standing Slash only in XX Slash.
