Greed Sever is one of Ky Kiske's Special Attacks, first appearing in Guilty Gear XX.

It replaced Needle Spike and Crescent Slash from previous games, but would be replaced by Foudre Arc in Guilty Gear -Strive-.

Overview[]

Ky performs a forward back-turning jump, heaving along his electrically-charged sword (that emits glowing rainbow afterimages unique from his other sword swings) in a downwards slashing arc with both arms as he swings it down upon nearly landing. The downward force behind Greed Sever is great, and can sometimes bounce an unfortunate foe back into the air.

In EX mode, Ky's Greed Sever is similar in both form, jump arc and function to Bandit Bringer, replacing the downward punch sequence.

Despite its moderate speed as a primary overhead attack for mixup, Greed Sever is one of the most telegraphed moves in the games it appears in due to the loud electric crackling sound and the flashing lights it creates. Still, Ky becomes immune to low attacks at the start of the move and can pass over grounded projectiles, including Sol's Gun-Flame.

On hit, the move isn't too rewarding in terms of overall damage potential (due to the proration in most of Ky's attacks), but the untechable ground bounce on a Counter Hit often allows air combos and/or juggles. It also has a notable Tension gain on hit for meter building. Furthermore, Ky's jumping arc can veer over the opponent slightly, hitting them with his lower-rear hitboxes and making this a prime okizeme tool to use.

Greed Sever exists as a Force Break, added in Λ Core Plus R. In addition to doubling the striking power, enough to cause a screen quake, it ends with Ky dropping to the ground faster with a slamming slash (via using the ending frames of Ky's grounded throw animation). This version tends to be a punish tool with low immunity as its faster animation makes it harder to react to. It also has higher untech time and the ground bounce on counter hit is just as potent as the base version.

Trivia[]

  • This move is also called Greed Saber or Light Saber by the community.
  • Despite being a telegraphed overhead, the Greed Sever is well-known as an unblockable due to being used in tandem with Stun Dipper, which hits low, causing opponents to look out for that move instead of the telegraphed Greed Sever.
