If you’re looking to power up your Pokémon beyond its limits in Pokémon Go, you’ll need XL Candy. In this Pokémon Go guide, we’ll teach you what XL Candy is and where to find it.

What does XL Candy in Pokémon Go do?

Once your trainer level hits level 40, you’ll get access to XL Candy, a special huge candy that allows you to level up your Pokémon past 40. You’ll only be able to increase your Pokémon’s CP to a certain extent using Stardust and regular candy. To increase beyond this limit, you need XL Candy.

It costs 10 XL Candy to power up your Pokémon at first, and the cost increases as you power it up more. It costs 296 XL Candy to fully power up a Pokémon. Shadow Pokémon require more XL Candy, and purified Pokémon require less XL Candy.

Just like normal candy, XL Candy is specific for each Pokémon’s evolution line. To level your Pichu, Pikachu, or Raichu past level 40, you’ll need Pikachu XL Candy. There’s also Rare XL Candy, which like Rare Candy, can be used on any Pokémon.

Where to find XL Candy in Pokémon Go

You can find XL Candy randomly from the same methods you would find normal candy from. This includes catching Pokémon, hatching eggs, and transfering Pokémon. You can also get XL Candy from walking with your buddy Pokémon and from trading with friends.

If you’re really desperate for XL Candy, you can convert normal candy into it at a rate of 100 to 1. Don’t do this unless you’re sitting on thousands of candy because the cost is so steep.

XL Candy is also guaranteed when you catch a Legendary, Mythical, or evolved Pokémon.
