The fourth and final season of Sex Education was officially announced on September 25, 2021 at a Netflix Tudum global fan event[1] and was released on September 21, 2023.[2]

The fourth season takes place eight weeks after the season 3 finale.

It introduces a lot of new characters including; Maeve's tutor in America Thomas Molloy, as well as her friends she met at Wallace; Tyrone Harris, Ellen Rasmussen and Chris, Jean's estranged younger sister who comes to live with her to help her with taking care of Joy, Joanna Franklin, Cal's mother, who does her best to understand her child, Nicky Bowman, some Cavendish College students; a group of popular kids called the Coven (Abbi Montgomery, Aisha Green & Roman), Otis' rivalry sex therapist and Ruby's elementary school bully, Sarah Owen, Viv's new boyfriend, Beau, as well as Adam's co-worker at a farm with whom he later develops a bond, Jem and Jackson's biological father, Jerome Saibu.

Synopsis[]

Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, the students are navigating new territory at the high-tech and progressive Cavendish Sixth Form College. It's every health and wellness nut's dream with yoga on the lawn, a strong sustainability vibe and even a rival sex therapist on campus. This rivalry isn't the only thing bothering Otis, as he's also juggling a long-distance relationship with Maeve. She's living her dream at the prestigious Wallace University in the US and being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy.[3]

On April 12, 2022, Simone Ashley appeared on U.K. network ITV’s This Morning, where she revealed that she will not be returning for the fourth season.[4] On July 5, 2022, Patricia Allison appeared on U.K. radio’s Capital Xtra Breakfast podcast, where she revealed that she will not be returning for the fourth season.[5] On July 13, 2022, Radio Times magazine revealed that Tanya Reynolds will not be returning for the fourth season.[6] On August 1, 2022, Radio Times magazine revealed that Rakhee Thakrar will not be returning for the fourth season.[7] Despite that fact, on July 6, 2023 Digital Spy revealed that she would be coming back for one episode.

On August 3, 2022, Variety magazine revealed that Ncuti Gatwa will be returning for the fourth season.[8] On August 19, 2022, it was announced that Dan Levy, Thaddea Graham, Marie Reuther, Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James and Imani Yahshua joined the cast.[3]

On October 14, 2022, Lisa McGrillis appeared on U.K. network BBC One’s Breakfast, where she revealed that she joined the cast.[9]

On December 7, 2022, What’s on Netflix revealed that Andi Osho joined the cast.[10]

On February 19, 2023, Variety magazine revealed that Jodie Turner-Smith joined the cast.[11]

On March 3, 2023, Eshaan Akbar revealed that he joined the cast.[12]

On July 6, 2023, Digital Spy revealed that Jim Howick and Rakhee Thakrar were going to appear in one episode of the fourth season.

Filming[]

On August 5, 2022, Asa Butterfield confirmed that the fourth season of the series began filming.[13] On August 19, 2022, it was announced that the fourth season was officially production.[14]

On February 10, 2023, the filming of the fourth season was officially wrapped.

Trivia[]

  • Season 4 was officially confirmed to be the final one on July 5, 2023.
  • It is the only season to feature Ruby in every episode.
  • This season marks the comebacks of some characters that were absent in last season(s); Roz Marchetti, Sean Wiley and Harriet Anders.
  • Season 4 has the least extensive main cast list of all seasons.
  • It is also the only season to not feature any additions to the main cast.
  • Laurie Nunn, the series creator, explained Ola and Lily's absence that their story arc was wrapped up very nicely at the end of season 3, and it felt organic to give the pair a happy ending.
    • We also don't see Anwar or Olivia in this season either, Simone Ashley confirmed that she would not be coming back due to scheduling conflicts with Bridgerton.
  • According to several sources, many actors wanted the series to end because many of the characters storylines would be wrapped up this season
