Ruby Matthews & Otis Milburn is a romantic relationship on the Netflix series Sex Education. It started in season 2, when he lost his virginity to Ruby on the night of his party.

Strangers[]

During season 1, Otis and Ruby hardly interact except for when he and Maeve will help her identify the person who sent the whole school a compromising picture of her.^[1]

The beginning[]

While their interactions in season 2 are initially non-existent, their relationship takes a most unexpected turn when, following episode 6 (and a party a little too alcoholic), Otis wakes up in his bed with a hangover and Ruby by his side. She casually confirms to him that they had intercourse last night but that she cannot find the condom, which worries Otis greatly. She will later admit that she is not sure that their intercourse have been protected. The two then go to a pharmacy to get a morning-after pill. If Ruby is reluctant at first to enter it, Otis' arguments will eventually convince her. During the questionnaire to obtain the pill, Otis learns from Ruby's own mouth that her father has been suffering for one year from "multiple sclerosis" (MS), a disease affecting the central nervous system and which can lead to permanent physical incapacity in the patient and in the worst case, his death.

After getting the pill, Otis will worry about whether Ruby was consenting at the time of their intercourse, to which she will answer yes, justifying this by her habit of sleeping with "nerdy boys" when she is sad, which gives her for a short time the feeling of being passionately loved. Otis reveals to her that this was his very first sexual intercourse and asks her about the level of his performance. Surprised, she replies that he was not great but not terrible either.

Otis asks if her father's illness is causing her sadness. She answers him yes but immediately diverts the subject of the conversation by accusing a lack of symmetry in her eyebrows after epilating them. Playing the game, Otis replies that he finds them very even. Ruby smiles at him and thanks him for accompanying her, adding that most boys are not as considerate as he is. Their arc for this season ends with Otis driving Ruby back on his bike.

Hooking up[]

Sometime between seasons 2 & 3, during a costume party at Olivia's, where Otis was dressed as macaroni cheese and Ruby was dressed as Christina Aguilera, the two hook up for the first time since the situation from episode 2.7. Both of them enjoyed it so much that they ended up having sex throughout the whole summer holidays.

In episode 3.1, it was leaked to the school that they were sleeping together in a row, that Otis tells Eric about the "Sex King" and he couldn't say who it was, because the person then will tell anybody that he and Ruby have a sexual relationship, which would be embarrassing to Ruby because she is a very popular in comparison to Otis who's clearly more nerdy. In spite of the whole school knowing about them being a thing, Ruby wants to keep on seeing Otis. In the end of episode 3.1, they officially become a couple, sharing a passionate kiss in front of Moordale Secondary, whereas many students were watching them in shock.

Being official[]

In episode 3.2, they made their relationship public. Ruby started to changing his look, also driving him to school, and Otis started to spend more time with Ruby and her friends at school. Despite Otis being nice, Anwar and Olivia were not very welcoming to Otis even though Ruby told them to be nice.

In episode 3.3, Otis and Ruby went on a date where at the end they went to Ruby's and Otis got to know Ruby's dad. Towards the end of episode 3, Ruby confessed her love of Otis to which he replied "Oh.. that's nice, g-good night then." Making it obvious that he wasn't at the same stage in the relationship. At the beginning of episode 3.4, Ruby was acting distant and showed that she was clearly annoyed that Otis hadn't told her he loved her. Then, she asked him about it. After, their conversation, they broke up.

Aftermath[]

After their break up, Ruby couldn't pull herself together, as this was the first time she was heartbroken. She still loved Otis, that is why she couldn't be around him during the school trip in episode 3.5. She also saw Otis and Maeve sharing a kiss, which only depressed her even more.
