I was giving you a compliment. Doesn't mean we're friends.
— Anwar to Lily[src]

Anwar Bakshi is one of the main characters in seasons 1-3 of Sex Education. He is portrayed by Chaneil Kular. He is the best friend of Ruby Matthews and Olivia Hanan, and is the boyfriend of Nick. He is a former member of The Untouchables.

In season 1, Anwar is introduced as part of the Untouchables clique, which makes him one of the most popular students at Moordale Secondary. He is also very open about his sexuality and presents himself as a mean and arrogant person. However, the truth is that he's terrible at opening up and is often trying to push others away by saying rude remarks about them as a coping mechanism. He's also Eric's crush, who, however rejects him by saying that pretty boys like him aren't Eric's type.

In season 2, Anwar starts dating Nick, but doesn't know how to douche, and so goes to Otis for advice. Eventually, Anwar loses his virginity to Nick.

Anwar spends half of season 3 getting used to Otis being Ruby's boyfriend. However, after their breakup, he, alongside Olivia comforts Ruby and is very protective of her, especially during the school trip when Otis is assigned to their group. Anwar also takes part in ruining Hope's plan for changing Moordale into a sex-free campus, which, however, ends up with the closure of the school, which forces the students to look for a new one to finish their education.

Throughout the Series[]

Season 1[]

In episode 1, Anwar is first seen in a car alongside his fellow members of 'The Untouchables': Ruby, Olivia, and Aimee. Eric points them out, and Anwar tells him to stop staring, spending the entirety of the season insisting that they are and never will be friends. Eric has an unrequited crush on Anwar in this season.

In episode 2, after finding out about the sex clinic started by Otis, he tells him how "freaked out" he is by "bumholes", in hopes that he will receive help from him. Otis however leaves, unsure of how to respond.

In episode 6, Anwar makes a comment about how Eric's outfit looks like "prison chic" and is subsequently punched in the mouth by his peer, who immediately regrets it. Eric later tries to apologise, and Anwar informs him how he used this moment to come out to his mum. Anwar's mum is very accepting of him, and insists on referring to Eric as a "gay basher" for hurting her son. Eric then asks if this action has ruined their chances of dating, in which Anwar replies with "Bitch please. Pretty boys like me are not your type" before leaving and telling him that he is still not his friend.

Alongside Olivia and Ruby, Anwar spends the season making Aimee extremely uncomfortable. In Episode 1, the trio make Aimee uncomfortable with her ham sandwich, insisting that they are all vegan now, so no longer eat ham or smoke. After other acts such as forcing her to carry their library books back to the library, by episode 8, Aimee dumps the trio for her actual best friend, Maeve, who the group have spent years referring to as "cockbiter" and spreading other negative rumours about.

Season 2[]

In episode 2.6, we find out that Anwar is dating Nick, as the two are in bed, attempting to be intimate. Nick asks to have sex and Anwar gets on all fours, waiting for Nick to "put it in". Nick then informs him that he might want to douche first, and Anwar, unaware of how to douche, runs away out of fear. He then approaches Otis, asking him for some help on how to do it. Otis is unsure of how to help him, so asks Rahim Harrak for some advice. Whilst drunk at his party, Otis tells Anwar that he asked Rahim for help, and Anwar assumes that means that Rahim knows it was him that needed the help (Otis didn't tell Rahim it was Anwar) so confronts him about the problem as he's too afraid to ask his boyfriend. Rahim replies by saying that if he isn't comfortable with talking to his boyfriend about douching, then he isn't ready to have his penis up his bottom. Later in the episode, Anwar tells Nick about his problem, and Nick assures him that he doesn't mean to pressure him, and just wants him to be comfortable. By the end of the episode, the pair have sex, so Anwar has presumably understood how to douche.

Season 3[]

In episode 3.2, Anwar is furious with Ruby as she has given Otis his jacket to wear. Anwar retaliates by trying to find a new look which, by the end of episode 3.2, is the "Pimp on Fire".

In episode 3.3, he is one of many students that are against the new uniforms, insisting that it is "itchy as f*ck".

In episode 3.4, Nick offers Anwar a strawberry flavoured condom during sex, which Anwar ends up having an allergic reaction to. After having the terrible sex education class with the boys that Hope forced them to have, Anwar assumes that he has some kind of illness and is going to die. Miss Sands then tells him to go to a sexual health clinic on Mayfield Road. In this scene with the sexual health expert, Anwar expresses how the main reason he wears condoms is because in every movie with gay characters he's ever seen, they always die of AIDS by the end, and he is trying to avoid that. The professional assures him that there is enough of an advance in modern medicine that he doesn't need to worry too much about dying from AIDS. She also reveals the cause of his reaction, and his problem is soon solved. Later in this episode, he is seen comforting Ruby, after she has broken up with Otis, as he didn't love her back. Anwar, Ruby and Olivia share a group hug in her home, which is the first time The Untouchables were ever allowed into her house.

In episode 3.5, he spends his time on the trip to France alongside Olivia defending Ruby from Otis. After Otis is put in their group, they're forced to be around him, and despite their best efforts, Ruby allows Otis to talk to her. Later in the episode, Anwar is incredibly disgusted by the poo on the car.

In episode 3.7, Anwar joins the rest of the kids at the Sixth Form in making the sex positive video. Anwar's contribution is a small line saying "I'm great at anal douching" whilst dressed as a penis. The footage repeats for a little bit after headmaster Hope tries to turn it off and it glitches.

Season 4[]

Anwar and Olivia had both gone to a different school, instead of Cavendish College like Ruby. In episode 4.3, Ruby revealed to Otis that she lied to him ealier about going out with Anwar and Olivia; in reality she lost contact to both them after they found new friends at their new school.

Anwar has a good relationship with his mother. After he got hit by Eric at school, he used it as a way to come out to her, telling her that Eric was a homophobe. She accepted that her son is gay.

Friends[]

Olivia Hanan (best friend)[]

Anwar and Olivia

Olivia is Anwar's best friend, alongside Ruby. In season 1, Anwar did not seem mad at Olivia after they found out that she was the one who leaked the photo of Ruby's vagina, which could mean that he understood Olivia being angry with Ruby, after the latter was embarrassing her and making her feel uncomfortable. In season 2, when Anwar freaks out before having sex with Nick, he runs away to the toilet and calls Olivia, who helps him out to get away from Nick's house; Anwar runs away, leaving Nick in the room on his own. In season 3, after Olivia and Anwar find out about Ruby and Otis' affair, they feel embarrassed by their friend's choice, but with time they decided to accept Otis as Ruby's boyfriend, even though they were still so mean to him. After Otis broke up with Ruby, both Olivia and Anwar were comforting and supporting her, being invited over by Ruby for the first time. When Anwar got rash on his face, Olivia and Ruby really care about their friend, asking what was it and how he got it. After SRE class organised by Hope, Anwar worries about that strange thing on his face, telling Olivia and Ruby this could be HIV or AIDS and he could die, which tottaly freaks them out, but after a small talk with Miss Sands, they decide to visit the clinic on Mayfield Road, where everyone got answers for their questions and fears. During the trip to France, Anwar sits behind Olivia and Ruby, talking to them and still comforting Ruby after being heartbroken.

After the closure of Moordale Secondary, Anwar and Olivia decided to go to Taylor's Secondary School in Northbury, whereas Ruby went to Cavendish College. It was said that Anwar and Olivia made lots of new friends at their new school and quickly forgot about Ruby, which led to losing touch with her.

Ruby Matthews (former best friend)[]

Ruby and Anwar in France 2

Ruby is Anwar's best friend, alongside Olivia. She perceives him as her right-hand man, hanging out with him very often, walking down the school corridor with him, and supporting each other in tough moments. In season 2, Ruby and Anwar went to the fun fair together, where Ruby insisted that Anwar get on Ferris wheel (despite his rebuttal that it would ruin his hair), because she wanted to get closer to Rahim. In season 3. Anwar and Olivia found out about Ruby and Otis' relationship. Both of Ruby's friends were both embarrassed and shocked about Otis having casual sex, and then actually being a couple with Ruby, but with time they partially accepted her choice, and tried to be happy for her, but of course, still being rude to Otis. In the next episodes, Anwar and Nick are having sex, and after they did it, a strange thing looking like a bubble appeared on Anwar's face. After the SRE class in episode 3.4, he is frightened about it, and tells Ruby and Olivia that he may die, which totally freaks them out, but later, after a small talk with Emily Sands they decidie to visist a sex specialist, where he finds out that he's just allergic to strawberry flavoured condoms, and the bubble is going to disappear soon. In the last minutes of the same episode, Ruby breaks up with Otis and decides to invite him and Olivia over for the first time. As soon as they arrived, they walked in to Ruby's room, sitting next to her from both sides, and then sharing a mutual hug, showing that in spite of being rude to others, they really care about each other and stick together really close. During the trip to France, in episode 3.5, he sits behind Ruby and Olivia on the bus, talking to them, and sometimes comforting Ruby after break up with Otis. In episode 3.7, after Moordale students start to riot against Hope, he and Ruby are seen walking in the main hall, being shocked about the look of the place and a count of medias.

In season 4, it's revealed that Anwar decided to go to a different school than Ruby, which led to losing contact with her, since he found new friends, and don't have time for her anymore.

Rivals[]

Aimee Gibbs (formr enemy; former friend)[]

101 Olivia, Aimee and Anwar at Moordale

Aimee used to be Anwar's friend as a fellow member of the Untouchables clique, as she was invited to hang out with them probably due to being rich. However, despite being "friends", Anwar and others didn't treat her with respect, as they would often criticize her, and gate-crashing into her house without her permission, or even using her, as Anwar made her to take his books back to the library. At first, Aimee was tolerating their antics, mostly due to her people-pleasing attitude, but because Ruby, Anwar and Olivia were often targeting Maeve, Aimee eventually renounced herself from the clique, which in return made her another target of their harassing.

Maeve Wiley (former enemy)[]

Due to Maeve's promiscuous reputation and being a social outcast, Anwar and rest of the Untouchables are always on the front line to torment her, either for being poor or straight up slut-shaming her. Anwar was doing it mainly because of Ruby, who hated Maeve and liked bullying her.

Personality[]

He enjoys a good gossip, going to parties, and making fun of others with his friends Olivia and Ruby, Although he presents himself as rude, he is only someone who is really bad at opening up to people. He often pushes others away with rude remarks and insults. His boyfriend Nick insists that Anwar is actually a very kind person once you get to know him.

Physical Appearance[]

A lot of Anwar's identity is shown through his appearance. He constantly wears bright blazers, with slightly spiky but neat hair. He takes good care of both his hygiene and his physical appearance.
