Olivia Hanan

Olivia Hanan is one of the main characters in seasons 1-3 of Sex Education. She is portrayed by Simone Ashley. She is the best friend of Ruby Matthews and Anwar Bakshi, and is the girlfriend of Malek Amir. She is a former member of The Untouchables.

Olivia is introduced as one of the most popular students at Moordale Secondary, being the member of The Untouchables clique. In season 1, Olivia is Otis and Maeve's first official client in their sex therapy business and is also the one who leaks the photo of Ruby's vagina to every student at school, in order to get revenge on her, because despite being best friends, Ruby's treating her badly all the time.

Prior to season 2 storyline, Olivia gets into relationship with an Iranian boy called Malek, who lied to Olivia about his age and turns out to be 15. Meanwhile, Olivia's also bonding with other girls during the detention, starting respecting Maeve and supporting Aimee in dealing with trauma.

Olivia eventually gets back together with Malek prior to season 3, and spends it adjusting to the new situation, trying to keep the inner peace of the group, as Ruby starts dating Otis. However, after their breakup, Olivia, alongside Anwar are both comforting Ruby, being very protective of her during the school trip.

Throughout the Series[]

Season 1[]

Olivia is a member of "The Untouchables" along with Anwar and Ruby. She also briefly accepts Aimee in the group. Growing tired of Ruby's constant mockery of her look, Olivia anonymously leaks a photo of Ruby's vulva to the entire school, threatening to reveal her identity during school's assembly. However, Olivia's actions are found by Otis and Maeve. She succeeds at redeeming herself in the eyes of Ruby by claiming in school assembly that the displayed vulva is hers, prompting a wave of support as nearly all the girls join her in that effort, including Ruby at the end.

Season 2[]

Olivia struggles with her relationship with Malek. Indeed, due to believing she makes an ugly face whenever she has an orgasm, she covers his face with a pillow, causing Malek to believe that she has a fetish which freaks him out. Olivia goes to Otis for help, and Otis reassures her, stating that she should not feel embarrassed about what she looks like when she is having sex with Malek. Olivia then puts tape on Malek's face to make him uglier during sex so she feels at ease.

When Jean's notes about the students are released, Olivia is shocked to discover that Malek is actually fifteen. Moreover, she is among the group of girls suspected of having written a slutshaming message towards Miss Sands along with Maeve, Aimee, Ola, Lily and Vivienne. The girls struggle to find something which bonds them all, but they eventually share their experiences regarding sexual assault. They then all go to a salvage yard to smash a car and let their frustration out.

Season 3[]

In the end of episode 3.1, when everyone finds out about Ruby and Otis' affair, she and Anwar are embarrassed with it, but then they decide to accept Otis as Ruby's new boyfriend.

In episode 3.3, she is one of many students that are against the new uniforms; she's crying while trying on the new school uniform.

In episode 3.4, Malek wants to have sex without a condom. After some worry and doubt, Olivia agrees, telling him to pull out before he comes. During the terrible sex education class with the girls that Hope forced them to have, Olivia hears terrifying things from Sex Educator; she had sex with her boyfriend, and he did not tell her that the condom split, which later made her pregnant. After the class, Olivia is terrified, talking to Ruby that she and Malek don't use condoms sometimes, and if something goes wrong she thought that she'll take the morning after pill and everything will be fine. Later, all of the Untouchables are sharing their emotions after a class, which was interrupted by Miss Sands, who tells them to go to a sexual health clinic on Mayfield Road. In the scene with the sexual health expert, Olivia says that not using a condom feels better for Malek, but when it comes to her is stressing, because she worries about getting pregnant. After leaving the doctor's office, she calls Malek a dickhead, but later saying that she won't dump him, because she still loves him annoyingly. Later in this episode, she is seen comforting Ruby, after she has broken up with Otis, as he didn't love her back. Olivia, Ruby and Anwar share a group hug in Ruby's house, which is the first time The Untouchables were ever allowed into her house.

In episode 3.5, she spends her time on the trip to France, sitting beside Ruby on the bus, and alongside Anwar defending Ruby from Otis. After Otis is put into their group, they're forced to be around him, and despite their best efforts, Ruby allows Otis to talk to her. Later in the episode, she seems exhausted with the trip. During returning to Moordale, she puts an eye sleeping mask on.

Season 4[]

Olivia and Anwar go to a different school, instead of Cavendish College like Ruby. In episode 4.3, Ruby revealed to Otis that she lied to him earlier about going out with Olivia and Anwar; in reality she lost contact to both of them after they found new friends at their new school.

Malek Amir (boyfriend)[]

Malek is second in the show, and first known Olivia's boyfriend. They've been together for seasons 2 & 3, with little break during season 2, after Olivia finds out that Malek is a minor and that having sex with him was a crime. In the first scene of season 3, we can see Malek and Olivia having sex, meaning that they made up. In same season, Malek wants to have sex with her without any birth control, which stresses Olivia so much. Later, she shares her thoughts about this with Ruby in episode 3.4, after a Sex Ed class organised by Hope. Eventually, Olivia and rest of The Untouchables visit a sexual health clinic on Mayfield Road, where Olivia understood that she didn't have to agree to have sex with Malek without any contraception, but didn't want to break up with him, knowing that she loves him anyway.

Olivia has a good relationship with her mother. The two often spend time together, and one of the activities they do together is dancing traditional Indian dances. Mrs. Hanan often teaches Olivia how to dance them, and often points out the mistakes she does while dancing, which annoys Olivia. After Mr. & Mrs. Hanan found out that Olivia is dating an Iranian boy, Malek, they get very mad at their daughter.

Anwar Bakshi (best friend)[]

Anwar is one of Olivia's best friends, beside Ruby. Olivia and Anwar seem to be a little bit closer to each other than Olivia and Ruby. In season 1, Anwar did not seem mad at Olivia after they found out that she was the one who leaked the photo of Ruby's vagina, which could mean that he understood Olivia being angry with Ruby, after the latter was embarrassing her and making her feel uncomfortable. In season 2, when Anwar freaks out before having sex with Nick, he runs away to the toilet and calls Olivia, who helps him out to get away from Nick's house; Anwar runs away, leaving Nick in the room on his own. In season 3, after Olivia and Anwar find out about Ruby and Otis' affair, they feel embarrassed by their friend's choice, but with time they decided to accept Otis as Ruby's boyfriend, even though they were still so mean to him. After Otis broke up with Ruby, both Olivia and Anwar were comforting and supporting her, being invited over by Ruby for the first time. When Anwar got rash on his face, Olivia and Ruby really care about their friend, asking what was it and how he got it. After SRE class organised by Hope, Anwar worries about that strange thing on his face, telling Olivia and Ruby this could be HIV or AIDS and he could die, which totally freaks them out, but after a small talk with Miss Sands, they decide to visit the clinic on Mayfield Road, where everyone gets answers for their questions and fears. During the trip to France, Anwar sits behind Olivia and Ruby, talking to them and still comforting Ruby after being heartbroken.

After the closure of Moordale Secondary, Anwar and Olivia decided to go to Taylor's Secondary School in Northbury, whereas Ruby went to Cavendish College. It was said that Anwar and Olivia made lots of new friends at their new school and quickly forgot about Ruby, which led to losing touch with her.

Nick (friend)[]

Nick's dating Olivia's best friend, Anwar, and the two met thanks to him. Olivia and Nick are seen talking at Otis' party in episode 2.6.

Ruby Matthews (former best friend)[]

Ruby is one of Olivia's best friends beside Anwar. In spite of being best friends, Ruby often mocks Olivia due to her unoriginal cosmetics and makes her feel uncomfortable about herself. That's why in season 1, Olivia decides to share the photo of Ruby's unshaved vagina, wanting to embarrass her in front of whole school. After Ruby found out Olivia was the one who leaked the photo, she stopped talking to Olivia, until the school's plea, where exceptionally Ruby was verbally bullied by other students. This situation made Olivia regret the thing she has done to her best friend and then she decides to stand up for Ruby and say that the vagina from the photo was hers. That was the moment when Ruby and Olivia's friendship was fixed. Throughout the season 2, Ruby is still rude to her sometimes, but Olivia doesn't seem to mind it. In season 3, when she finds out about Ruby and Otis' affair, she, just like Anwar, feels embarrassed and shocked about her friend's choice, but eventually, they decide to accept Ruby's new boyfriend, supporting her, but still being rude to Otis. After he breaks up with Ruby, Olivia and Anwar were supporting and comforting her and, what's more Ruby invited them over for the first time ever. During school trip to France, Ruby and Olivia were sitting beside each other on the bus, doing a lot of things in the same moment: doing nails/make-up or later, coming back to Moordale, putting eye sleeping masks.

In season 4, it's revealed that Olivia decided to go to a different school than Ruby, which led to losing contact with her, since she found new friends, and don't have time for her anymore.

Enemies[]

Maeve Wiley (former enemy)[]

Olivia and Maeve had a tense relationship as Olivia was part of the Untouchables, and the two clearly disliked each other. Olivia was often calling Maeve names and made fun of her poverty, whereas Maeve didn't like the way Olivia and rest of the Untouchables were treating Aimee when she was part of their clique. The only moments when Maeve and Olivia were actually nice to each other were after they both got detention, when alongside other girls they went to the junkyard to smash some things and let their pain out and the morning after that, when Maeve, Olivia and rest of the girls decided to help Aimee overcome her bus trauma. After these situations, Olivia stopped being mean to Maeve, as she noticed that she wasn't that bad as she'd always thought.

Aimee Gibbs (former enemy)[]

Aimee is Olivia's former friend. Aimee used to be in the Untouchables with her. When Aimee was part of their group, Olivia and others liked to make her feel uncomfortable with herself, which they enjoyed. Despite disliking each other, Olivia showed Aimee compassion and supported her after she found out about the assault Aimee went through. After the detention they both had, they and other girls went to a junkyard to ease their pain out. Olivia was also one of the girls who got on the bus with Aimee, to help her fight her trauma, which she had after the assault.

Personality[]

At the first glance, Olivia appears to be just like other members of the Untouchables clique; stereotypically vain, arrogant, and cruel, as she has no qualms of tormenting unpopular students for things like living in poverty such as Maeve. She seems to be more of a follower of the group, especially of Ruby with whom she has a tense relationship, as she often mocks Olivia and makes her insecure, which proves that she has trouble of standing up for herself, or is either afraid of Ruby and her power at Moordale. Despite her flaws, she can also be very kind and sympathetic to others, comforting Aimee after her breakdown in detention and revealing her experience with sexual assault.

Olivia possesses a quite vengeful side of her, which she showed after leaking a photo of Ruby's unshaved vulva and anonymously blackmailing her that she'll reveal her identity in front of an entire school.
