Sofia Marchetti

Sofia Marchetti is one of the recurring characters in Sex Education. She is portrayed by Hannah Waddingham.

She is one of Jackson's mothers. She pushes Jackson to maintain a strict training regimen.

Throughout the Series[]

Season 1[]

After Jackson introduces Maeve to Sofia and her wife, Sofia treats Maeve sceptical, unlike Roz, who seems to accept Maeve. She often has a different opinion on anything than her wife, what often causes fights between them.

Season 2[]

After an argument with Jackson, Sofia reveals that she is insecure about that fact that she is not Jackson's biological mother, so she was thrilled when Jackson showed interest in swimming, since Sofia used to be a competitive swimmer. She genuinely believed he enjoyed swimming, until Viv revealed that Jackson self-harmed due to pressure from swimming. She also admits that she pushed him, partially because she wanted to live her dreams through Jackson, since she can no longer compete herself.

In episode 2.8, she's seen on the audience watching her son, Jackson as Romeo in the school play.

Season 3[]

Sofia is asked about her homosexuality and how she discovered it by Jackson as he struggles to build a solid bond with non-binary student Cal Bowman. She comforts her son after he begins opening himself about Cal and how he did not handle his feelings towards them very well.

Season 4[]

Jackson finds out that his biological father wasn't a sperm donor and gets mad at his mothers. He finds old love letters in one of the drawers in his parents' room and gets the address of a man who turns out to be his father. He doesn't want to know Jackson and makes him leave. Jackson realizes how lucky he is to have two loving mothers.

Jackson Marchetti (adoptive son)[]

Jackson is Sofia's son. Sofia used to be a competitive swimmer, so the two bonded over their love for swimming. According to Jackson, Sofia felt insecure about not being his biological mother, so she felt pressure to connect with her son in other ways.

However, over time, Jackson felt that swimming was too stressful, but didn't want to tell his parents, so Viv did it for him. After hearing the news, Sofia didn't want to accept it, wanting Jackson to accomplish what she wasn't able to. But with time she tries to accept that Jackson doesn't want ot swim anymore, as she seems happy after hearing that Jackson will take part in the school musical as Romeo.

Some time later, after Jackson falls for a non-binary student called Cal, he asks his mother when she found out that she was lesbian, being confused which sexuality he is. After Cal and Jackson decide that they should remain friends, Sofia sees that something's wrong and offers Jackson a talk and have some ice cream in order to cheer him up.

After Jackson found out about Jerome, he got mad at Roz and Sofia, but eventually, after Jerome showed that he didn't want to know Jackson, he apologized to his mothers and the three shared a family hug.

Roz Marchetti (wife)[]

Roz is Sofia's wife. When the two met, Roz had Jackson, but Sofia didn't mind it and felt in love with her. The two decided to be a family. With time Roz and Sofia started falling apart. They seemed to be a perfect family. But, despite having a child, and a huge, pretty house, Roz and Sofia were two completely different people. Sofia was rather uptight and nervous, whereas Roz was more relaxed, trying to convince Sofia that Jackson should have had more time to himself, and she should stop making him spend his whole time on swimming. According to Jackson, he was the glue that sticked them together, and if there was not him, they would get divorced already.

Some time later, Jackson openly told them that they should get divorced, because they didn't understand each other anymore. Despite this Roz and Sofia started getting along well again after season 2 finale.

In season 4 the two decided to tell Jackson the truth about his biological father.

Personality[]

Sofia is a mother who wants to see her son succeed. Often, Sofia's determination puts a strain, not only on the relationship she has with her son, but also on her marriage to Roz Marchetti.
