Gallery Mode (ギャラリーモード, Gyararī Mōdo?) is a recurring game mode in the Guilty Gear series that allows the player to collect images by playing the other game modes available.

Overview[]

First appearing in Guilty Gear X Plus, Gallery Mode was initially similar to Mission Mode of later entries, having a number of challenges against the CPU that require specific characters and conditions, such as defeating it with an Instant Kill. There are 24 plus 8 challenges, classified according to their difficulty: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Petit. Upon clearing these challenges, illustrations drawn by Daisuke Ishiwatari are unlocked. It also has a User gallery, a Story gallery (for illustrations obtained by completing Story Mode), and an Ending gallery (for illustrations from Arcade Mode).

Gallery Mode properly appears in Guilty Gear XX. From this title onwards, the game mode is strictly used to collect images earned by completing other modes by playing with all characters, one illustration each. The most common categories are Arcade, Story, Mission (now a separate mode by itself), and Movie (containing clips such as the game's opening).

Its iteration in Guilty Gear Xrd is quite different. It now features grids separated into sections; the player must obtain World Dollars (W$) in order to purchase individual items, and there are few illustrations, only some key art by Daisuke Ishiwatari. Instead, it encompasses a wider range of media: character avatars, Arcade/Episode openings and endings, voice samples for characters and their actors, a new section for Music containing selected tracks from past games, and character color sets. In Revelator, all of the gallery items (excluding Arcade cutscenes and Consumer ver. voice actor voices) can be obtained through Fishing.

In Guilty Gear -Strive-, the mode is almost identical to Xrd, except you can no longer buy the items directly with World Dollars, and must obtain them through Fishing. Each of the gallery's three sections is separated into multiple sub-categories, and there are a lot more unique items compared to previous entries. In addition to character portraits and Key artwork, Strive adds concept art for all the playable characters, while also adding non-BGM songs to the Music section.

Details[]

Guilty Gear X Plus[]

Besides the Challenge-obtained images, there is a User gallery, a Story gallery for images seen in Story Mode, and an Ending gallery for Arcade Mode illustrations. There is a total of 90 images to unlock. Viewing reward illustration no. 04 (which depicts Johnny), the password for Guilty Gear Petit 2, KDOKBNZY, can be seen.

Guilty Gear Xrd[]

There are 100 items in Sign. Meanwhile, Revelator has 305 items to unlock, and with the addition of 11 for Rev 2, goes to a total of 316. It is divided into sections, which can be toggled with [LB] and [RB]: Art Work, Movie, Sound (separated into Voice and Music in Revelator), and Character.

In Sign, 'Art Work' contains 4 key art illustrations (W$2000 each) and character avatar (W$500), while 'Movie' lists Episode Mode openings and endings for each character upon completion, game openings unlocked by default, and credits unlocked upon first viewing in Arcade or Story Mode. 'Sound' contains bonus character and actor voices (W$1000), some in-game character dialogue (W$2000) and 20 music tracks (W$8000) from past games that will be added to BGM selection. In 'Character' you can buy the unlockable character Sin Kiske for W$200000. In the Steam version of the game, Leo Whitefang and Elphelt Valentine are also unlockable through the gallery at the same price, but need to be bought as separate DLC in the PS3 and PS4 versions.

In Revelator and Rev 2, 'Art Work' contains 6 key art illustrations and character avatars, with the same prices as in Sign, and 'Movie' lists the same kind of items as its predecessor. 'Voice' contains character and actor voices, and some Instant Kill dialogue, prices ranging from W$1000 to W$2000. 'Music' contains 56 tracks (each costs W$4000) to be added to BGM selection. 'Character' has the unlockable character Raven for W$200000, two color sets for everyone, each at W$10000, and an alternate costume for Elphelt (her appearance from Sign) at W$100000.

Guilty Gear -Strive-[]

Strive separates its gallery into three categories: 'Artwork', 'Music' and 'Movie', each having 2 to 4 sub-categories. 'Artwork' is separated into 'Key Visual', which includes the box art for the game and countdown illustrations drawn by various artists, and 'Character Portrait', which includes all the playable character's portrait art plus three pieces of concept art relating to each character. 'Music' includes 'Past Title Battle BGM' (character themes from past games), 'Vocal BGM' (music from trailers, credits and past stories with vocals by NAOKI), 'Story BGM' which cannot be selected to be played during matches, and 'Others' (songs mostly from Strive and Guilty Gear Vastedge XT). The last main section, 'Movie', contains the game's Opening and several trailers.
