Afro

Afro is an new unique interaction and state introduced Guilty Gear -Strive- that Faust can put on the opponent.

Overview[]

An Afro can either be attached to the opponent by an item via What Could This Be? or through Faust's command grab Snip Snip Snip. When an opponent gets attached with an Afro, it aesthetically changes the character, with the character now wearing an Afro for a limited period of time before it poofs away. While it is naturally black, the afro can changed colors to match the character's hair color. The Afro will not change color if the character's hairstyle is the same as the Afro or if the character doesn't have any notable hair to speak of (such as Faust). On the other hand, it can hide certain characters's hair attire if they were wearing something before (eg. May, Axl, Ramlethal, Millia, etc.).

The afro itself can also become part of character's certain animations as well such as their overdrives or even round/victories if they were to retain it by then.

If it's done via What Could This Be?, it acts as a spawnable item that can be either attached to the opponent by being hit by it once the Afro comes into contact or they were to either come close to it if it lands. It is also always guaranteed to be attached to the opponent if Faust lands his command grab onto them. Unless if they got it via the Snap Snap Snap, a character doesn't receive damage if they were to have an Afro. The Afro itself doesn't cause hitstun either, so it could become attached to the opponent in the midst of the battle while not interrupting them.

However, what makes the Afro a strong move for Faust is that it extends the opponents's hurtbox vertically. This allows the opponent in the Afro state to be hit by certain stuff that would normally be whiffed. The afro itself can be ignited by flame attacks (eg. Faust's jumping Dust, meteors, etc.) which then explodes. The afro can be ignited whether the opponent gets hit or block the attack (if it was block then it will take longer to explode). Additionally, the character in the Afro State is unable to remove it on their own and would have to wait for it to poof away or for Faust to ignite it if they want to escape. Because of this, this makes the Afro State a strong tool for Faust as it can increase his pressure and combo potential.

Trivia[]

• Humorously, if the Afro was ignited right before a donner K.Os Faust, it will be still be inflamed in the victory screen.
• Faust's afro was initially green during the closed beta, but in later builds, it was changed to the default afro color.
• When an Afro is attached to its Potemkin, it will changed its color to match the hair on its armor rather than Potemkin's actual hair color.
• One of Ky's reaction to receiving an Afro references how his hair is always growing despite the amount of times he cuts it.
• May and Anji seemed to have an interest in going with an afro style before.
• I-No and Nagoriyuki's reaction to receiving an Afro hints at them possibly having one point in their lifetime before changing it into their current hairstyle.
• On Bedman?'s default costume, his afro will be pink; most likely a reference to Bedman from Xrd's hair. In alternate costumes, the Bed's afro will copy whatever color Delilah's hair is.
