Bedman? is a minor character that appeared during Guilty Gear -Strive-'s Another Story. Originally the bedframe used by Bedman it was reprogrammed by him before his death with the primary function of protecting his younger sister, Delilah, from harm. It made its playable appearance in Strive as a DLC character, accompanied by Delilah.

Design[]

Bedman? was the Reinforced High-Density Bed Frame of Bedman, and as such, retains a majority of its features. However, it now shows clear signs of damage and age, in the form of cracks, dents, rusting and dulled paint. The most prominent damage being to its head and right arm.

The screw-like features where its eyes are, are now missing, With deep cracks in its right eye, revealing the red light that makes it, and a thick groove directly beneath the right. The crown has been replaced with a pure-black, four-pronged crown that hovers slightly above the head.

After the events of Departure. Their right arm has been greatly damaged, revealing the frame beneath and being practically unusable, with it being dragged along the ground.

Upon being hit by Bone-Crushing Excitement in Strive or when Bedman uses Sinusoidal Helios in Xrd, it is revealed to have a mouth with crooked teeth and gums. When put in the afro state, it grows lavender hair, the same color as Bedman's when he was alive.

Personality[]

Despite originally being a weapon. Bedman? shows great care for their deceased user's sister, protecting her from harm, even if it means getting damaged in the process.

Bedman? is seen to show some emotion, being able to comfort Delilah.

Story[]

Background[]

As a result of some programming Bedman did while on the brink of death, the bed continues to operate on its own despite him being gone.

It was recovered by Delilah after helping to keep her from going on a rampage.

Its primary function is protecting her.

Simple communication is possible, but it's incapable of doing things like responding considerately, accumulating memories, or complex communication.

Guilty Gear Xrd[]

Bedman? was created as both a weapon and transport for Bedman, a fighter who would die if he were to awaken. The Bedframe is heavily damaged after Robo-Ky uses his self-destruct protocol, knocking Bedman off it, leading to his subsequent death in order to avoid an attack from Venom.

Guilty Gear -Strive-[]

Bedman? suddenly appears whilst Ramlethal Valentine, Baiken and two soldiers are discussing how to go about stopping Delilah destroying a city. It attacks them due to knowledge that they shall harm Delilah. It easily fights off the group, before one of the soldiers reveals himself to be Sin Kiske. Sin is able to reason with Bedman? and clear the confusion, pointing out how his user's sister is crying. With this revelation, it blinks on over to her, buying the group time by creating a field around her.

As Bedman?'s field around Delilah begins to fail, Delilah tells it to get away. Despite the order, it stays longer, letting her hug its finger before falling to the ground below.

After Delilah is saved, the bedframe is shown to be crying. A while later, Delilah soon returned to collect Bedman?.

Allusions[]

  • The concept of a weaponized robotic hospital bed is likely an homage to the 1991 anime film Roujin Z.
  • Continuing Bedman's references to the progressive metal band Dream Theater, Delilah being by Bedman?'s side in gameplay could be an homage to the cover art for their album Images and Words, which depicts a young girl standing next to a bed.
  • In an interview conducted after Bedman?'s release[1], Daisuke Ishiwatari stated that the concept of the bed's current haunted state takes some inspiration from Annabelle from The Conjuring series.
  • Bedman?'s moves could be written in the hexadecimal numeral system used in computing. In decimal, this would make the names of the moves:
    • call 4BA -> call 1210
    • call 4B3 -> call 1203
    • call 4B9 (Malfunction) -> call 1209 (Malfunction)
    • error 6E -> error 110
    • call 13C -> call 316
    • call 4CC -> call 1228
    • This doesn't include call 0x$0.20 and call 0x$1.00 as hexadecimal values can't have fractions, however the 0x prefix of the numerals is still connotation for hexadecimal values in some programming languages.
  • Bedman? and Delilah's dynamic as playable characters where Delilah does not actually fight is similar to Donovan and Anita from Capcom's Darkstalkers franchise.

Music[]

Trivia[]

  • Bedman? is the first character in Guilty Gear to be accompanied by another who doesn't fight. This being Delilah, who is shown cowering or dodging the attacks it does.
  • While stated to be reprogrammed prior to its user's death. It is commonly theorized that the bedframe is possessed by Bedman.
    • According to Strive 's producer Ken Miyauchi, it contains "part of Bedman's spirit", but is not Bedman himself[2].
  • Bedman? (alongside the Fairy's Forest Factory) Was originally to be released in March. But this was delayed to April, to ensure the 'best quality possible'
  • Due to the delay, Bedman? currently has the longest waiting period out of any DLC character before becoming playable, with 133 days.
