Little Larva are one thing, but it’s the big ones you’ve got to watch out for. These chunky bugs are twice as aggressive, and they’re also very photosensitive meaning they’re not the biggest fans of torchlight. If you ever place a torch, go off exploring, then come back to find it destroyed, you can almost guarantee it’s the work of a Big Larva.

The Big Larva is a common enemy native to the Clay Caves and Larva Hive.

Big Larvae are extremely aggressive towards Torches, and will actively seek out and destroy any placed nearby. It has higher stats compared to its smaller counterpart, so these enemies can present a challenge to less experienced players.

Notes[]

  • The Big Larva has a stronger variant with noticeably higher stats, which only spawns in the Larva Hive.
  • Big Larvae seek out and destroy several types of objects in the world. These include:
  • While all types of torches will be actively sought and destroyed by Big Larva, Lamps are treated like other furniture and are only broken when the Larva is on one of the surrounding tiles.

Tips[]

  • If you have enough of them, rapidly placing Torches on the ground near a Big Larva can provide an effective distraction, as they will prioritize destroying them over all else.
  • Try not to stand too close to Big Larvae for long, as they have quite high damage up close. A good strategy is to alternate between attacking and immediately moving backwards out of its range, since they have a short pause before attacking.
  • When first exploring the Clay Caves, it's best to obtain a Tin Sword quickly, as it can usually take down a Big Larva in 5-6 hits.
  • Because Big Larva can destroy furniture and some walls it's recommended to place walls they cannot break around your base, or remove any Chrysalis you find, to keep them from destroying your base.

Trivia[]

  • Big Larvae seem to share sound effects with smaller Larvae, although pitched down.
  • When wearing the Larva Helm and Larva Chest, it is possible to talk to a Big Larva without getting attacked. It will say one of the following things at random:
    • "Squeek"
    • "Must dig"
    • "Hungry!"
