Mizero Ncuti Gatwa (born October 15, 1992) is a Rwandan-Scottish actor. He portrays Eric Effiong on Netflix's Sex Education.

Biography[]

Gatwa was born in Nyarugenge, Kigali, Rwanda.[1][2] His father, Tharcisse Gatwa, from Rwanda's Karongi District, is a journalist with a PhD in theology.[3][4]

The family escaped from Rwanda during the Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi in 1994 and settled in Scotland.[5] They lived in Edinburgh and Dunfermline. Gatwa attended Boroughmuir High School and Dunfermline High School before moving to Glasgow to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Acting in 2013.[6][7] The Conservatoire awarded him an honorary Doctorate at the class of 2022 graduation ceremony.[8]

Gatwa is known for Stonemouth (2015), Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans (2019) and The Last Letter from Your Lover (2021).

In 2022, Gatwa was announced as the fifteenth incarnation of the Doctor on the BBC series Doctor Who, making him the first black actor to lead the series.[9][10][11][12]

On February 9, 2023, Gatwa annouced that season four will be his final one as Eric.
