A perfect example of a virtual reality, the Matrix was a virtual world that simulated reality as it is in the Real World.
It is only ever accessed by jacking in through a neural-interactive headjack which allowed users to be fully immersed into the world resulting to the person jacked in truly dying should they ever experience death while inside the Matrix. Because of the absence of a headjack, humans born into the world are unable to access the Matrix; limiting participation only to redpills and bluepills.
And while redpills are unable to indefinitely stay in the Matrix because of the need to nourish their physical bodies, bluepills are semi-permanently connected to the Matrix whilst in their pods.
