Tural

Comprised of two great landmasses─Xak Tural to the north, and Yok Tural to the south─the "New World" lies far to the west of Eorzea's shores. Its many and diverse peoples spent centuries mired in territorial wars until the epic deeds of Gulool Ja Ja and his dream of Tuliyollal saw them united under the banner of a single nation.

Tural (トラル, Toraru?), known to the people of Eorzea as the New World (新大陸, Shintairiku?), is a continent in Final Fantasy XIV located far to the west of the Three Great Continents, across the ocean of the Indigo Deep. It is the setting of Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail.

Profile[]

Tural is divided into Yok Tural in the south and Xak Tural in the north. The city of Tuliyollal stands on the border between the two halves of Tural, on the Yok Tural side with a bridge connecting to Xak Tural. Ruled by Gulool Ja Ja, Tuliyollal is the capital of the nation of the same name, which has trade routes with Sharlayan and Limsa Lominsa. Previously, the Mamool Ja nation of Mamook and other disparate tribes warred continuously until Gulool Ja Ja united the peoples under one nation.

For a thousand years, stories have been told of a legendary golden city hidden somewhere in Tural. It was said that the people lived there in eternal happiness, knowing neither aging nor sickness. Many have searched for the golden city over the centuries, and the stories about it have reached even the Three Great Continents in the east.

Similar to Norvrandt, the people of Tural call the races that Eorzeans are familiar with by different names:

• Hrothgar = Xbr'aal
• Miqo'te = Hhetsarro
• Viera = Shetona
• Hyur = Tonawawta
• Vanu Vanu = Hanuhanu
• Goblin = Moblin

Tural uses its own currency called pel, instead of gil, though recently Turali merchants have started accepting gil from foreigners as well. Ten thousand pel is roughly equal to a million gil.

Some examples of native plantlife in Tural are ogre pumpkins, ruby tomatoes, popotoes, and alligator pears. All have become staples of Eorzean diets ever since contact was made between the two continents.^[1]

The Viper and Blue Mage jobs originate from Tural.

Geography[]

As a massive continent spanning the northern and southern hemispheres, Tural has a wide variety of environments and peoples.

Yok Tural[]

Yok Tural is the southern region of Tural, dominated by jungles and mountains. Of the many races that make up the Turali nation, Yok Tural is the ancestral home of the Mamool Ja, Xbr'aal, Yok Huy, Pelupelu, Moblins, and Hanuhanu.

Tuliyollal[]

The multi-ethnic capital of Tural, ruled by Gulool Ja Ja. The city climbs up a mountain from the coast. It is located on the border of Yok Tural and Xak Tural, with a bridge crossing the great chasm to Xak Tural.

Kozama'uka[]

A verdant forest south of Tuliyollal, many rivers flowing from the western mountains make their way through here. The jungle is home to the Moblins and Hanuhanu, relatives of Eorzea's Goblins and Vanu Vanu.

Yak T'el[]

A dense jungle located across mountains southeast of Tuliyollal. The region has many natural wellsprings of water called cenotes. The highlands that are plentiful with game are the dwelling of the Xbr'aal, while the lowlands where the dense foliage blocks sunlight is home to the Mamool Ja.

Urqopacha[]

A mountainous region in the western part of Yok Tural. It was once the seat of the empire of the giant Yok Huy, and now the remnants of that civilization live alongside the diminutive Pelupelu. Urqopacha is home to Worqor Zormor, the tallest mountain in all of Tural.

Xak Tural[]

Xak Tural is the northern region of Tural, dominated by a dry landscape and open plains. But in sharp contrast, the largest lake in Tural is also located here. The northernmost reaches of Xak Tural are icy and cold. Northern Tural is the ancestral lands of the Shetona, Tonawawta, and Hhetsarro, though ever since Tuliyollal was founded many of them can also be found in the south.

Shaaloani[]

An arid region with high amounts of ceruleum, the discovery of which has recently called sweeping industralization in to mine it. The local people of Shaaloani hold tight to their traditions even as modern mining towns and railways have been established. The Tonawawta and Hhetsarro live here.

One of the native tribes are the Whalaqee, who hold ceruleum and the color blue as sacred and are the creators of blue magic. They live near their sacred Lapis Canyon, where the stone glows blue with ceruleum.

Heritage Found[]

A land where the sun is blotted out by thunderclouds and electrical aether is abundant. Purple lightning illuminates the land both day and night. The name Heritage Found was only given recently; its Turali name is Yyasulani, home of Shetona and Tonawawta.

Solution Nine[]

A city of advanced technology created by a different civilization than Tuliyollal, Alexandria. It is located on the ninth floor (out of twelve) of a massive tower in Heritage Found called the Everkeep.

A region of ocean off the northeast coast of Yok Tural where many ships have gone missing, drawn in by rumors of a lush and fertile island in the area.

History[]

Background[]

Mamool Ja enemies appear in Syrcus Tower, indicating that the Allagan Empire had contact with Tural thousands of years ago. It is unknown if they conquered it, or merely visited.

In the past, the Yok Huy ruled an empire in Yok Tural, based in Urqopacha. One thousand years ago the Yok Huy attempted to invade Xak Tural, spurred on by dreams of a legendary golden city. However their soldiers were exposed to sicknesses in the north that they had no natural resistances too, and many died, forcing the Yok Huy to give up on their northern expansion, and indeed to even pull back from all of their territories besides Urqopacha itself. Over the centuries their power has waned after their retreat to their mountain homes.

For many ages Tural was attacked by the great tural vidraal Valigarmanda, a monstrous beast that left devastation in its wake whenever it appeared.

While ancient epics and historical tomes in the Three Great Continents of Aldenard, Ilsabard, and Othard alluded to the continent's existence, as recently as eighty years ago the residents of those continents debated whether the New World really existed. In 1498 of the Sixth Astral Era, a Roegadyn adventurer named Ketenramm the Blue from Limsa Lominsa rediscovered the New World after sailing west across the Indigo Deep for two months. Though he attempted to name it "Ketenland", the New World is the name used by most in the Three Great Continents today.^[1]

Upon discovering the continent, Ketenramm and his crew spent several months exploring the inland and came across the nation of the Mamool Ja. Ketenramm presented gifts from Eorzea to the Mamool Ja's leader, who permitted them to roam his nation during their stay. Ketenramm and his crew mapped the land and gathered various root vegetables and seeds such as ogre pumpkins, ruby tomatoes, popotoes, and alligator pears, which they brought back with them to Eorzea.^[1]

For ages, the various peoples of Tural fought each other. It was not until only eighty years ago that they were united under the Dawnservant Gulool Ja Ja, who established the multiethnic nation of Tuliyollal. Ketenramm was one of Gulool Ja Ja's allies in his adventure to unite Tural. In addition to uniting the people of Tural, Gulool Ja Ja and his party also defeated Valigarmanda and sealed it away in ice.

After Ketenramm's return in the year 1500 of Sixth Astral Era, word of Ketenramm's discovery spread throughout the city-state and more and more Lominsans set out to seek glory and riches in the New World, ushering in a golden age of exploration. These voyages were hampered by shipwrecks and ambushes by the Sahagin. In 1555, Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn led the League of Lost Bastards on an expedition to the New World. After her year-long expedition, she returned to Limsa Lominsa having discovered a safe passage to the New World.^[2]

About twenty years ago, Galuf Baldesion was invited to Tural by Gulool Ja Ja to investigate its legendary golden city.

Before Dawntrail[]

Some Mamool Ja have come to Eorzea from Tural to serve as mercenaries and obtain respect within their tribal structure.

Two Eorzeans, Martyn Goodfellow and Whastrach Ahldwaensyn, participated in an expedition to Tural to meet with the Whalaqee. While Martyn started learning about their blue magic, Whastrach instead wished to mine their sacred Lapis Canyon for the vast amounts of ceruleum. When the Whalaqee became stricken from an Eorzean illness, Whastrach attempted to exploit them by having them sign over their land in exchange for the medicine. Martyn and the new blue mages he recruited, including the Warrior of Light, helped solve the tribe's plight, convincing Whastrach not to mine on sacred ground.

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail[]

As the Dawnservant Gulool Ja Ja, leader of Tural, grew old, a contest to decide his successor was to be held. Foreign aid for the candidates competing in the contest was not only accepted but encouraged by Gulool Ja Ja, for the leader of Tuliyollal would need to know how to navigate a myriad of various cultures. Gulool Ja Ja's daughter, Wuk Lamat, found aid in the Warrior of Light, Krile Baldesion, and Alisaie and Alphinaud Leveilleur. Meanwhile, Thancred Waters and Urianger Augurelt were hired by Koana. There were four competitors in total, but Wuk Lamat was adamant that one of them, Zoraal Ja, could not win the contest, for he was a warmonger who wanted to conquer Eorzea now that the Garlean Empire was no longer a threat.

Behind the scenes[]

Tural is inspired by the real world Americas, much like Aldenard is based on Europe and Othard is based on Asia. Yok Tural resembles Central and South America; the golden cities in Tural are based on the legends of El Dorado, the lost city of gold believed to be hidden somewhere on the South American continent. Xak Tural evokes the arid southwestern parts of North America, with the recent industrialization for mining there calling to mind the United States' westward expansion.
