Gigants (巨人, Kyojin?) are a species of giant humanoid spoken hailing from Abalathia's Spine. While they tower over most other spoken, gigants are relatively lacking in intelligence. In Eorzea, Gigants are divided into three dominant tribes: the Gigas (ギガース, Gigāsu?), the Giants (ジャイアント, Jaianto?), and the Hecatoncheires (ヘカトン, Hekaton?).

The gigas are relatively more intelligent than their primitive brethren, and have historically subjugated their giant and hecatoncheir cousins as slaves, and centuries ago sold the hecatoncheirs to Ul'dah to work their mines. In modern days however, most giants and hecatoncheires are broken free of servitude, and the three tribes are in constant conflict with each other. Gigas appear to worship the recently unearthed Crystal Tower, with many of their recently deceased found by scholars to have been carrying crude statuettes approximating the tower.

In Tural, another tribe of Gigant, the Yok Huy once held an empire on Urqopacha but it has since fallen.

Final Fantasy XVI[]

Gigas in Active Time Lore from FFXVI

Gigas resemble large, obese goblins, wielding large weapons and possessing surprising agility given their size and stature. Despite their association with goblins, it is disputed in-universe whether the two are the same species.

A Gigas appears as the first boss of the game in Stillwind, summoned by a Goblin leader to attack Clive, Wade, and Tyler. The common Gigas later appears as a regularly appearing mini-boss, along with the Akashic Gigas, Gigas Bruiser, Gigas Ploughswain, Hill Gigas, Thunderbound Gigas, Windbound Gigas, and Virtual Gigas.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles[]

Gigas appear as enemies in dungeons and a gigantic Gigas by the name of Jack Moschet owns the Moschet Manor where he is fought as the boss.

Etymology[]

The mythology and legends of many different cultures include monsters of human appearance but prodigious size and strength. Giant is the English word, coined 1297, commonly used for such beings, derived from one of the most famed examples: the gigantes of Greek mythology.

Gigas is a popular term for races of giants in fantasy games. Gigas is a Greek word meaning "giant", originally used to describe the race of Gigantes in Greek mythology and is used in the scientific name, as the specific epithet, of hundreds of species of animals and dozens of plant species to denote their size.

The Hecatoncheires were children of Gaia and Uranus who were thrown into Tartarus as soon as they were born. They were released by Zeus, and aided him in overthrowing Cronos. They were giants depicted with one hundred arms (and sometimes even fifty heads). The name (Εκατόγχειρες - Hecatonchires) is of Greek origin: Hecaton (εκατόν-) means one hundred and chires (-χείρες) means hands.
