Robots were sentient mechanical creations of the Lufenians in the first Final Fantasy. After Tiamat attacked the Lufenians and took over the Flying Fortress, the Lufenians were banished to the land and settle in town of Lufenia, and their robot creations were scattered. Many robots were encountered by the Warriors of Light in various states of disrepair or malfunction, particularly in the Waterfall Cavern, Mirage Tower, and the Flying Fortress. One robot, encountered in the Waterfall Cavern, gave the Warriors of Light the Warp Cube.
Since its inception, the Final Fantasy series has fused fantasy/medieval/fairy tale elements with sci-fi—or even, at times, cyberpunk—elements. The robots in the first Final Fantasy present an element of an ancient civilization that was far more technologically advanced than the current society, a recurring aspect of the series.
