Jack Hunter is a post-War gonzo journalist, recording his travels in a holotape series, found in Appalachia in Fallout 76.
Background[]
Jack was raised in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky, where he became acquainted with alcohol and chems. Jack claims to have taken every chem in the post-War wasteland, including Daddy-O, Mentats and Day Tripper. His travels have taken him across the former United States, recalling the feeling of the Mississippi River and the Florida breeze (or at the very least seeing them in his chem hazes). His introduction to West Virginia was through the powerful concoction known as Nukashine, during which he had hallucinations while being attacked by feral ghouls, eventually waking in the Appalachian hills.[1]
Jack's other experiences in Appalachia include visiting the Metal Dome, where he describes the sights and sounds of the Rust Eagles' robotic combat matches against the Gladiators of Steel, the focus of Event: Test Your Metal. He describes the matches as creating "sheer captivation" from the inhumanity of the violence on display.[2]
Jack has also been to Atlantic City, where he and a "confidant" visited the Neapolitan Casino. The two were in Atlantic City to cover an event known as the "Showmen's Games," but ended up taking Daddy-O and drinking bourbon. While under the influence, they encountered the Devil's Blood, a local chem specialty meant only for the "real high rollers." Jack and his confidant saw them taking the Devil's Blood as a way to soil its exclusivity. Jack describes the resulting trip as "horrifyingly glorious," creating the feeling of reaching out for a life that had been kept from him, but not quite grasping it. This created a sense of near-immediate addiction, that not even addictol could cure, and that "maybe nothing [would]."[3]

Jack Hunter appears only in Fallout 76. He was first mentioned through a holotape series featuring his voice introduced in the Once in a Blue Moon update, before fully appearing as a character in the Expeditions: Atlantic City update part two, America's Playground.
Behind the scenes[]
Jack Hunter's journalism style is a reference to gonzo journalism, a personal, experience-based narrative form of first-person journalism which was popularized in the 1970s by Hunter S. Thompson. Both Hunter and Thompson have "Hunter" in their names, were raised in Kentucky, and used copious amounts of drugs that influenced their musings. The Decadent Metal Dome, in particular, is a reference to a famous article by Thompson, "The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved." The quest Hells Eagles is a reference to Thompson's time with the Hells Angels motorcycle club, documented in the 1967 book Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs.
