So listen up... I arranged a meeting with some local traders. They were all like "hey, we wanna buy your bombs." Being the young entrepreneur I am, and a craftsman of the best artisanal bombs around, how could I resist? Anyway, turns out these guys were actually Cultists... They waylaid me and took the goods. I barely got out alive. I'm so SCREWED if Uncle Vinny finds out, so I need you to go get everything back, so I can get back before Uncle Vinny learns what's happened. I'll pay you!

Luca Costa is an employee of the Blue Ridge Caravan Company in Fallout 76, introduced in the Once in a Blue Moon update.

He is the central character in the Beasts of Burden event, during which he is found at the Sacramental Glade. When the event is not active, he can be found at Big Bend Tunnel East.

Background[]

Luca is the nephew of Vinny Costa. Although now an adult, he appears to have been born either shortly before or after the Great War; Luca mentions that as a child, he once tried to befriend a mirelurk he named "Scuttles," but it did not go well and the mirelurk died.[1]

Luca only recently started residing with his uncle Vinny, saying that he has been staying with him "a little while." As a result, Luca has been trying to find ways to contribute to the Blue Ridge Caravan Company, for which Vinny works as a manager.[2] While Luca finds that being Vinny's nephew has its perks, as no one wants to "start shit" with the boss' relative, he also mentions that Vinny does not baby him and expects him to pull around his own weight.[3]

Although he does acknowledge that his uncle Vinny can appear frightening, Luca believes that Vinny is not actually scary; he just seems tough. He even says that Vinny is "actually pretty cool."[4] That said, Luca does still want to avoid Vinny's wrath if at all possible if he screws something up.[5] Vinny, for his part, sees his nephew as an occasional nuisance with problems that can only be solved by a "boot up his ass,"[6][7] but the two are still family and any rifts between them are part of being related, and will always work themselves out.[8]

One source of conflict between Luca and Vinny is the role that Luca plays at Blue Ridge. Luca struggles to find ways to help out with the company, though he does frequently join the caravans on their various trips.[2] However, Luca has recently found a niche of creating homemade explosives to sell. This initially stemmed from a hobby interest in chemistry, but he found that he was bad at making things that did not blow up.[9] Luca markets them as a "multipurpose item" to use against hostiles or even for home renovations and landscaping.[10] However, Vinny is greatly concerned about the quality of the product and refuses to officially sell them on Blue Ridge's books. Although Luca insists that his explosives are up to par, Vinny wants to avoid any "mishaps," as accidental detonations would look bad on the business.[11] Vinny dismisses them as "homemade cherrybombs,"[12] but Luca continues to sell them off the books as he aspires to have Vinny officially distribute his explosives.[13]

As a result of this dispute over the quality of Luca's explosives, Luca has been assigned to the Cranberry Bog. Although Luca is unnerved by sightings of cultists and hostile robots in nearby Watoga, Vinny says he will only consider reassignment once Luca stops selling the bombs "under the table."[12] However, Luca is none too dissuaded by his uncle's disapproval, and continues to see himself as a young entrepreneur trying to make a profit, which leads into the public event Beasts of Burden. While in the bog, Luca encountered a group of "traders," unaware that they were Cult of the Mothman members in disguise. Led by Elder Adelaide, the cultists tricked Luca by arranging a trade deal with him, upon which they ambushed him and seized his crude bombs, as well as his pack brahmin, Moona Lisa.[14][15] The proceedings of the event Beasts of Burden see the Vault 76 dwellers assisting an injured Luca, fighting back against the cultists, retaking the bombs via Moona Lisa and escaping the bog, even as an Ogua appears to attack.[16] Although he initially naively attempts to take credit for the escape, Luca quickly realizes his mistake and says he owes the dwellers,[16] offering them cheers for their help the next time they see each other.[17]

Luca Costa: "Well firstly name's Luca. I help out around here, going with some of the caravans and the like. Vinny's my uncle, been staying with him a little while. Go on some of the routes sometimes, stretch my legs and all that. Been tryna contribute to Blue Ridge, I don't do much but I can make a half-decent explosive."
    (Luca Costa's dialogue)
  3. Vault 76 dweller: "What's it like being related to Vinny?"
Luca Costa: "It's got its perks, no-one wants to start shit with the boss' nephew, y'know? But Vinny's not the coddling type either, I don't get a free pass."
    (Luca Costa's dialogue)
  4. Luca Costa: "Uncle Vin' seems tough. And he is, but he's not scary. He's actually pretty cool."

    (Luca Costa's dialogue)
Note: This line is heard if Event: Beasts of Burden fails.
  6. Vault 76 dweller: "Really? The other members don't need help?"
Vinny Costa: "Eh, everyone else is fine. Only thing that'll fix my nephew Luca's problems is my boot up his ass. Love the kid and all, but there's no talkin' sense to him. As for Minerva and the big lug? She's our top performer, no troubles there-- and Tommy's a pro. I guess there's Aries, but, uh... I wouldn't ask my worst enemy to talk to that freak longer than they have to. You could always ask him what he's got going on, but, uh... Good luck with that."
    (Vinny Costa's dialogue)
  7. Vault 76 dweller: "How about the other members?"
Vinny Costa: "Eh, everybody else is doin' all right. With Jo at the helm, we're normally runnin' pretty smooth. We're about back to that now, thanks to you. Granted, my nephew Luca will always be a pain, and Aries will always be a creep, but, uh... Let's see. Ah, right. There's Minerva and Tommy. Hard to pin down, but when I see 'em, they always seem chipper. She's got good deals, too. Make sure you peruse if you bump into her. Oh, and if ya see Tommy Ten-Toes... While I know he can't count that high, tell him he still owes me 50 caps."
    (Vinny Costa's dialogue)
  8. Vault 76 dweller: "She needed help sorting out some family issues. She's good now."
Vinny Costa: "Well you know what they say, family's everything. You met my nephew? Drives me up the fuckin' wall sometimes, but that's family. Things'll work themselves out."
    (Vinny Costa's dialogue)
  9. Vault 76 dweller: "Tell me more about these explosives."
Luca Costa: "Started as a hobby, kept trying chemistry and I was pretty awful at making things that didn't blow up."
    (Luca Costa's dialogue)
  10. Vault 76 dweller: "You think people would buy them?"
Luca Costa: "Sure they would! It's a multipurpose item, all sorts of things you can do with explosives. Seal off that molerat nest for good, defend your home, parties, home renovations, landscaping, only limit is what you can think of! Though it'd be good to have buyers who don't turn out to be cultists every once in a while."
    (Luca Costa's dialogue)
Note: This version of the line is said if the player has previously completed Event: Beasts of Burden.
  11. Vault 76 dweller: "Why doesn't Vinny want to sell them?"
Luca Costa: "He's worried about them not being up to par, but they're good quality. Uncle Vinny just doesn't want any, uh, mishaps. Accidental detonations and such. Says it'd look bad on the business. They're as safe as any other explosives. Mostly. Once it's foolproof I'll convince him."
    (Luca Costa's dialogue)
