Lesser Devils are creatures found in Atlantic City in Fallout 76, introduced in the Expeditions: Atlantic City update part one, Boardwalk Paradise. They are offspring of the Jersey Devil, a separate creature type and cryptid.

Background[]

Main article: Jersey Devil

The Jersey Devil cryptid and its offspring, known as Lesser Devils, have a unique feature: their blood. Antonio Russo learned of this when he and Gene analyzed the body of a Lesser Devil that Antonio killed. Antonio made a mistaken attempt to seek out the Jersey Devil and sign over his soul, at first under the impression the Jersey Devil would be intelligent. However, he had no choice but to kill the Lesser Devil when it turned out to be a hostile animal. The blood is incredibly potent and addictive, with Russo and Gene turning it into the Devil's Blood, a highly addictive, incredibly rare and prohibitively expensive narcotic for Atlantic City high rollers.[1]

However, Antonio was unaware that the Lesser Devils emerging from the Pine Barrens near Atlantic City were actually juveniles. The Lesser Devils are offspring of the real Jersey Devil, which has even more potent blood, strong enough to produce an antidote for the Devil's Blood chem. The Devil's Blood continues to be produced from slain Lesser Devils who wander into the city, while the real Jersey Devil still lies in wait in the Pine Barrens.[2]

Characteristics[]

Lesser Devils are smaller in stature than deathclaws, though no less fiercer. They have health comparable to a mythic deathclaw and only scale up, and benefit from a creature park that makes them immune to having crippled limbs (although they can be blocked and pushed back as normal). Their primary advantage apart from deathclaw-level damage is ignoring armor when attacking, making them dangerous even to the most well-armored player characters.

When a Lesser Devil strikes the player, it may induce a staggering effect, and has a chance to cripple limbs.

Lacking a proper ranged attack, Devils are vulnerable to the player's own ranged attacks. However, killing ten using a melee weapon unlocks the Rip and Tear achievement.

Notes[]

Prior to being added to the game, the Jersey Devil was depicted in cartoon style on the gameboard of Rip Daring and the Cryptid Hunt, the twelfth in-game season.

Appearances[]

Lesser Devils appear only in Fallout 76, introduced in the Expeditions: Atlantic City update part one, Boardwalk Paradise.

Behind the scenes[]

The Jersey Devil is based on New Jersey folklore, like other cryptids in Fallout 76. The specific version of its legendary backstory is based on the Leeds Devil tale, rather than the Lenape people's myth of M'Sing, the winged deer spirit.

  1. ↑ Vault 76 dweller: "What does this all have to do with the Jersey Devil?"
Antonio Russo: "Espetta, kid, I'm getting there! Concerta wanted to sabotage me at every opportunity, and I had to get a leg up on her. I'd heard the legends my whole life about the Devil. Every tyke in AC did. So's I went to the Pine Barrens looking to strike a deal with him."
Vault 76 dweller: "Then why did you kill it?"
Antonio Russo: "Well, as it turns out, he's a fucking Devil when he's biting your ankles, but the thing's just a damn animal. No intelligence there. So I had no choice but to whack him. Figured I could get quite rich off of its corpse, so I took it to Gene to get it embalmed. And that, is where we learned of the potency of his blood. This is where Devil's Blood was born."
    (Antonio Russo's dialogue)
  2. ↑ Antonio Russo: "Can we maybe speed up the process here?"
    Abbie Russo: "Dad! Just wait..."
Gene: "Uh..oh. Uh oh. No. This isn't good. This is the opposite of good. What is that? Bad. Right. Bad"
Antonio Russo: "What's the problem here?"
Gene: "I-I wasn't expecting this. This has PROFOUND implications a-and I don't know WHERE-"
Antonio Russo: "Just spit it out already! My daughter is dying and we don't have the TIME for you to have your little eureka moment!"
Gene: "The sample you brought me isn't pure enough to make an antidote with."
    Abbie Russo: "What?!"
Antonio Russo: "That's the heftiest load of bullshit I've ever heard! That came from the Jersey Devil himself! How can you get any fucking purer?!"
Gene: "You're not going to believe me, but… That wasn't the real Jersey Devil. This is juvenile blood. The one you killed was just a child."
Antonio Russo: "What? So you mean the ones we see coming out of the Barrens are just its...children?! Then...how big's the father? Or...mother? Hard to tell with these things."
Gene: "I don't know. No one's ever seen it before. And lived to tell about it, t-that is. But if there's a juvenile, that means there's a parent. An adult would have blood potent enough to craft an antidote."
Antonio Russo: "So you're saying you want us to go into the Pine Barrens and kill an adult Devil? Just trying to see if I'm the one who's gone nuts, or if it's still you."
(Antonio Russo, Abbie Russo and Gene's dialogue)
