Highway Exit[]

Highway Exit section

During spring of 2034, we see Joel and Ellie entering Salt Lake City, Utah, where they're supposed to meet the Fireflies at Saint Mary's Hospital. The two now have a much stronger bond since last winter's events, but Joel notices how Ellie is still visually shaken by them, as she remains unusually quiet and distracted when he tries to engage her in a conversation.

They go past a highway filled with abandoned cars, another empty quarantine zone, and make their way through a bus station. There, Ellie spots something and runs off ahead of Joel. He catches up with her, discovering it to be numerous giraffes wandering around the now deserted city. As they stop for a moment to watch them, Joel hesitates. He tells her that they don't have to do this, and if she wants they can just turn around, go back to Tommy's place and start a new life. However, Ellie is determined to see the end of it, saying that after all they've been through, "it can't be for nothing".

Underground Tunnel[]

Underground Tunnel section

They go past a large number of medical tents, where Joel comments about in the first months of the infection, he had been part of a triage identical to this, surrounded by destroyed families. Ellie then gives him the picture of him and Sarah, apologizing for stealing it from Maria back at the dam, which he takes and thanks her. They make their way through an underground tunnel, filled with infected, and after going past them, they reach a flooded area. As they try to navigate it by staying on top of a number of abandoned vehicles, a bus collapses, making them go underwater. Ellie is knocked out as they are dragged by the violent current and is about to drown, but Joel grabs her and brings to the surface. Not breathing, he tries to perform CPR on her, as a Firefly soldier appears, ordering him to stand down. He ignores him, and is subsequently knocked unconscious.

Collectibles[]

"Bus Depot" contains the following nine collectibles:

Family photograph Artifact "Highway Exit" Before exiting the highway, enter the overgrown camper in the middle of the road. The photograph can be found on the dining table inside to the left.
2
Katerina Perich Firefly pendant "Highway Exit" As you descend the freeway exit, run past the school bus and make an immediate left. Amongst the rocks of the corner behind the guardrail and two orange barrels (against an abandoned car), the pendant can be found.
3
Note to wife Artifact "Highway Exit" Inside of the bus station, rummage through the luggage along the wall opposite of where the ladder is located. The note can be found in an open suitcase along with some crafting supplies.
4
Precipitate Comic "Highway Exit" After you watch the giraffes, continue through the bus station and enter the waiting room. Turn to the right and go inside of the men's restroom. The comic is on the ground by the far stall with a corpse inside.
5
Nicole Hoo Firefly pendant "Highway Exit" Outside of the bus station, move beyond the big triage tent to the left to the other side where a portable restroom is located. Look up at the top of the light fixture in the corner. Hanging from one of the lights is the pendant. It needs to be shot or hit with a brick or bottle in order to get it down.
6
Salt Lake Q.Z. map Artifact "Highway Exit" Outside of the bus station, go to the small tent in the triage area's far corner (where the workbench is located). The map is found inside on the table to the left.
7
Natalie Hoo Firefly pendant "Underground Tunnel" Before entering the underground tunnel (after Ellie gives Joel the photo of him and Sarah and they pass through a bus), circle around the city bus that is parked across most of the ramp. On the other side, the pendant can be found on the ground in the corner.
8
Bomb: Shrapnel Training manual "Underground Tunnel" In the area of the underground tunnel full of infected, look for a box truck (with a red horse head on it) that is parked perpendicular to the tunnel (before exiting the area). Climb onto the back and grab the training manual on top.
9
Catalysis Comic "Underground Tunnel" After dropping the fire truck's ladder down to Ellie, climb onto the venting that runs along the tunnel's left side. Follow it to the end to find the comic.

Behind the scenes[]

  • This chapter and "Bill's Town" are the only ones without any non-infected human enemies. Furthermore, this is the last chapter to feature the infected in the main story.
  • Walking together at the start of the chapter, Ellie tells Joel that she dreamed of flying in an airplane that is falling out of the sky, which she attempts to save. But just as the plane is about to crash, she awakes. This is possible foreshadowing to the end of the game, where Ellie fights to save humanity only to be rescued by Joel before she can actually do so.
  • The segment where Joel and Ellie pet the giraffe that is reaching inside the building is somewhat similar to the scene in the 2003 film Jurassic Park where a Brachiosaurus is feeding in a tree where Dr. Grant is sleeping.
  • If the player manages to kill all of the infected in the underground tunnel (including three bloaters, at least clickers clickers and five runners), Joel will mutter the quote "Endure and survive".
