One thing SEO's can't agree on at BrightonSEO... 🤐 SGE... (Search Generative Experience) Whilst attending brightonSEO there's a lot of talk on whether SGE will become a prominent part of the search experience going forward... And if it does, the threat is that between 20-60% of your search traffic will decline... Here's my opinion... It won't happen.. Google as a business makes money through ads. SGE distrupts that model. You've also got the issue of web masters potentially suing Google for 'stealing' their content for SGE, which inevitably snatches revenue/leads away from many businesses. Lawsuits for this are already happening across the globe... But Google can just use A.I for SGE can't they? They can. But that makes their product worse. And that, in my opinion, is way too risky for Google at this time. So be ready for SGE and optimise for it. But don't put all of your bets down that it's the future of search, because there's a very good chance it won't be as big as you think. What are your thoughts? Let me know below 👇

I think that there’s been so much talk and speculation about SGE layout, CTR drops but NOBODY is talking about user adoption. How is this going to be adopted by different demographics? Are users going to be frustrated with a more convoluted user journey? Does this give competitors like Bing an opportunity to swoop in? I feel like AI is being rammed down our necks at the moment, but at the moment it’s just a novelty that leads to more annoyances than anything else.

So here’s the thing… SGE is basically an AI version of Google Answers, which already took a big chunk of traffic from sites. Most of that damage has already been done on the queries that get the most traffic. Further erosion of organic clicks will happen, but I feel like this will not be as severe as everyone predicts. The major problem I have with AI is source attribution and referral. The unwritten contract sites have with Google is the exchange of content for traffic. If Google fails to deliver traffic to content creators for use of their content, there will be legal issues.

I'm super excited about the future of LLMs and generative AI, but in general I don't tend to worry about things I can't control. If SGE does happen, we'll figure out a way to make it work for clients, like we did with all the previous updates. If it doesn't, it will just join 3d cinema, segway, voice search, Google Glass and Google+ gathering dust on shelves 😁

If researchers find a way to create LLMs that don't make mistakes, maybe it'll become an important part of search. Until then, I'm happy to ignore it entirely.
