Kunio-Kun Wiki

Target; Renegade is a scrolling (certain versions are flip-screen) beat 'em up computer game released on the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum in the late eighties by Ocean Software (under their Imagine label). The game is a sequel to Renegade, but this game and its computer-only sequel Renegade III: The Final Chapter, are not related to the Kunio-kun series.

Taito released a version for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Development[]

Story[]

The story of the game, quoted from the American NES version manual:

"Yo! Listen up, Renegade! Mr. Big is back in town, and this time, the dude wants revenge! Hey, didn't you know? Mr. Big kidnapped your brother Matt. The word on the street is that Matt is being held in Big's Pig Pen, located on the upper side of town. Oh yeah, I almost forgot - all the gangs in every part of the city are out looking for you. There's nowhere to run, and no place to hide! Get going, Renegade, your brother is running out of time!"

Gameplay[]

The player takes control of Mr. K (known as Jack, or simply "Renegade") and fights his way through a number of stages, with the goal to find Mr. Big and either avenge your brother's death, or rescue him, depending on the version being played. The Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum Versions allow for two player cooperative play. Each stage has a number of scenes, and all the gang members in each scene must be defeated before the player can advance in the stage. At the end of each stage, a powerful boss awaits. Defeating the boss allows the player to proceed to the next stage.

The player can attack enemies with punches, kicks, jump kicks, and foot sweeps. In certain scenes, weapons like fire hydrants, trash cans, and baseball bats can be picked up and used for attacking. Certain enemies will also grab these weapons and use them against you. Some enemies will drop hearts which can be picked up to restore Mr. K's health meter.

You only have one life, and a limited time to get through each stage. If you run out of either time or health, the game is over. In the NES Version, getting a game over on any stage than the first gives you one chance to continue.

In the NES Version, the game's ending consists of a closeup of a happy Mr. K whilst the text states he rescued Matt from Mr. Big. Afterwards the game loops, explaining Matt was kidnapped again and you're sent back to Stage 1.

Characters[]

Main Characters[]

Mr. K (Jack)[]

The player character. His brother, Matt, has been kidnapped by Mr. Big, and Mr. K must fight his way across the city to rescue him.

Matt[]

The player character's twin brother. He's been kidnapped by Mr. Big, prompting Mr. K to come to his rescue.

Enemies[]

In each stage, Mr. K must fight his way through gangs to progress through the stage.

  • Sleazy Riders: A biker gang that will attempt to run down Mr. K with their motorcycles. Jump kicks are required to knock them off their bikes.
  • Unnamed Female Gang: A gang of females that strike with uppercuts, and will also grab fire extinguishers to throw at Mr. K.
  • Bat Boys: A gang of baseball players that, as their name implies, attack with bats. Knock them down and they'll drop their bats, which you can pick up and use against them.
  • Southside Strangers: Members of this gang will try to get close enough to Mr. K to strangle him.
  • Dagger Dudes: Members of this gang try to keep their distance and pepper Mr. K from afar with daggers.
  • Bruise Brigade: A gang of punks that try to get close to you to attack.
  • Skate Lords: A gang of skaters that will attempt to run down Mr. K on skateboards. Attack them to knock them off.
  • Hammer Heads: A gang that specializes in "waste disposal" by throwing trash cans at Mr. K.
  • Karate Clan: A gang of karate fighters.
  • Bouncers: The protectors of Mr. Big's Pig Pen Bar.

Bosses[]

At the end of each stage, a powerful boss awaits Mr. K. Defeating them allows Mr. K to advance to the next stage.

  • Achilles: This big guy attacks by throwing tires at Mr. K, and also has a powerful kick. His weak spot is his stomach, so hit him with kicks. Serves as the Boss of Stage 1 and 2.
  • Big Bob: This bruiser attacks with powerful uppercuts and kicks. The best way to take him down is with punches. Serves as the boss of Stage 3.
  • Siggy: This tough woman uses strong uppercuts, and can body slam Mr. K with ease. She's vulnerable to foot sweeps. Serves as the boss of Stage 4 and 5.
  • Mr. Big: Despite his name, he's rather small in stature, but don't get cocky, because he strikes hard and fast and has a number of weapons at his disposal. Boss of Stage 7.

Trivia[]

  • The game's front cover is based on the cover from The World's Greatest Fighter Teaches You How To Master Bruce Lee's Fighting System, a book written by famous martial artist Joe Lewis.
