Code of Professional Practice September 15, 2011 Ray Desautel
Know the Code!
The Professional Code of Conduct is there to protect YOU! It is written in a precise and concise way stating how you can and should conduct yourself as a professional teacher.
1. A teacher's first professional responsibility is to her or his students. 2. A teacher acts with integrity and diligence in carrying out professional responsibilities.
3. A teacher avoids involvement in a conflict of interest, recognizes that a privileged relationship with students exists and refrains from exploiting that relationship for material, ideological or other advantage. 4. A teacher speaks and acts with respect and dignity, and deals judiciously with others, always mindful of their rights.
5. A teacher respects the confidential nature of information concerning students and may give the information only to authorized personnel or agencies directly concerned with the individual student's welfare. 6. A teacher's conduct toward colleagues is characterized by consideration and good faith.
7. A teacher first directs any criticism of the professional activity of a colleague to that colleague in private. Only after informing the colleague of the intent to do so, the complainant may direct in confidence the criticism to appropriate officials through the proper channels of communication.
8. A teacher shall not be considered in contravention of the Code in: consulting with the Society or the president of the member’s local association; reporting reasonable grounds for suspected child abuse according to legal requirements. making a complaint of harassment under the provisions of a policy established in accordance with provincial workplace safety and health legislation.
9. A teacher does not bypass immediate authority to reach higher authority without first exhausting the proper channels of communication. 10. A teacher makes an ongoing effort to improve professionally. 11. A teacher adheres to collective agreements negotiated by the professional organization.
12. A teacher neither applies for nor accepts a position which is included in a Society in-dispute declaration. 13. A teacher or group of teachers makes only authorized representations to outside bodies on behalf of the Society or its local associations. Without the express permission of the Society, no member(s) conferring with outside bodies may explicitly or implicitly claim that they represent the Society or its local associations. (Violation of the Code shall be addressed through application of MTS bylaws.) (revised, Annual General Meeting, 2011)
Case Studies Read the case study on your table. Decide which statement(s) of the Code applies to your case study. Provide a response on how the situation should be handled following the Code of Professional Practice. Present your responses to the group.
Case #  1 Sarah has returned to the teaching profession after a six-year absence. She formerly taught at high school and is now working at a middle school. Sarah was dumbfounded when during the first week of school; three parents emailed her about day-to-day progress reports on their children. They asked her to give them an update on what was done in the class, the homework assignments, the behaviour of their child and a week’s notice of any tests/quizzes, including study materials for the test. She is concerned that other parents will do the same, and isn’t sure how this should be handled.
Case #2 John is a veteran teacher who teaches across the hall from a new teacher on staff. John is consistently late for his first period morning class and on more than one occasion, the new teacher has had to open John’s classroom door to allow students’ entry after “O Canada”. The new teacher has made a few casual comments to John about this situation, but it has not changed. If you are the new teacher in this situation, what should you do?
Case #3 Jenny is a teacher in your school building. Her boyfriend’s family has a reunion planned for the May long weekend at the cabin. Everyone is heading up to the cabin on Thursday night and Jenny is under pressure from her boyfriend to join them. She requests and is granted a “Personal Business day” on the Friday. While Jenny is at the cabin on Friday afternoon, she posts on her Facebook status that she is “enjoying a beer on the beach and lovin’ the summer weather”. By noon on Friday, the entire staff, as well as some students are aware of Jenny’s new post and her location on the beach while the rest of them are working. What mistakes has Jenny made? What are some possible ramifications?
Case #4 Cathy Johnson is a first year teacher. During her prep one morning, she passed by a fellow teacher’s classroom and overheard the teacher telling her class, “well you have to understand that Ms. Johnson is a first year teacher and doesn’t know any better.” Although upset with this comment, Cathy said nothing. A few days later she heard from two other teachers that this same teacher had made comments to both staff and students about Cathy’s lack of ‘classroom management.’ What would you do?
Ten Questions to use to Check if it is Ethical 1. Is it legal? 2. How will it make me feel about myself? 3. How will others feel about my action? 4. How would I feel if my actions were made public? 5. Does the action make sense? 6. Will my actions hurt others? 7. Is it fair? 8. Will people in authority approve? 9. How would I feel if someone did the same thing to me? 10. Will something negative happen if I don’t make a decision?

  • 11. Case Studies Read the case study on your table. Decide which statement(s) of the Code applies to your case study. Provide a response on how the situation should be handled following the Code of Professional Practice. Present your responses to the group.
