Base Locations in Enshrouded: General Tips
First and foremost, you'll want to approach base building in Enshrouded as a way to create handy Fast Travel points. Whether the strength of your Flame allows you to set down 2 Flame Altars or 8, where you place them should allow you to get around the map quickly and pick up essential resources for crafting and upgrades. With that in mind, here's some general tips you'll want to consider:
Tip!
You don't have to invest time and energy into making all your bases huge. If you're not inclined to spend time building up each of your bases, that's fine -- invest in one as your main base, then use your remaining Flame Altars "allowance" as ways to get from A to B.
1. Using the Ancient Spires
There are five Ancient Spires you can find across Embervale, which you can see on the map above. These are located in:
- Springlands
- Revelwood
- Low Meadows
- Nomad Highlands
- Kindlewastes
You'll unlock these as part of the main story missions and through generally strengthening your Flame Level so you can enter the higher-level Shroud. When you reach the top of each one, these Ancient Spires become Fast Travel points. You'll be able to jump from the top and glide down to mines, cliffs where you can excavate resources, Scavenger camps, and Flame Sanctums and Shrines.
For that reason, there's no point in building a base anywhere near these. As the map shows, the Springlands, Revelwood, and Low Meadows Ancient Spires are all quite close together on the western side. However, there's a large gap between the Ancient Spires in the east and the west, so it's best to use that central area of the map to drop your bases.
2. Moving Your Starter Base
When you begin the game, you'll be encouraged to build a base in the plains, but this is also close to the Cinder Vault. This can be used as a fast travel point, so after unlocking the Springlands Ancient Spire, it's worth moving your first base to somewhere more convenient in the Springlands. You'll be able to use the Cinder Vault to easily get back to the Braelyn Bridge, the first Shrouded area, and even the Saline Quarry to the west.
3. Locating Mines
The mines in Enshrouded are the fastest way to stock up on resources such as Salt, Copper, Iron, and more. Thankfully, most of the Ancient Spires can be used to reach the mining locations, but there are some that are just outside of gliding distance.
The last thing you want to do is keep gliding from Ancient Spires and having to run for ages to get back to a mine. In these cases, set up a base that's close to mines you can't reach by using the Ancient Spires, so you can go back and forth and stock up on resources in no time.
4. How Far You Can Glide
You'll improve the Glider you use as you go through the game, but at the start, your Glider and stamina will limit how far you can fly. Thinking about the previous points of locating mines and using the Ancient Spires to reach important locations, we've marked the distance around the Ancient Spires in red that you can comfortably fly to using the standard Glider you can craft at the beginning of the game.
The mines are marked in blue, to show how close you can get to most of them just by gliding down from each Ancient Spire.
Having a Better Glider
As you head for more challenging areas, you'll be able to craft better Gliders. These will consume less stamina and let you travel further. To show the difference, we've marked the areas you can comfortably glide to from the Ancient Spires using the Extraordinary Glider as a reference.
5. Higher Ground
We've talked a lot about gliding and using the Ancient Spires as launchpads, so it's no surprise we'd recommend establishing bases on higher ground wherever possible.
6. Flame Shrines and Sanctums
When you want to strengthen the level of your flame and enter areas of Deadly Shroud, you'll need Sparks. The way to get Sparks is to visit Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums. These can be revisited and used more than once, and when you're getting to the higher level upgrades for your Flame, you'll require up to 40 Sparks. Get ahead of the game, and try to place your bases in the middle of as many Flame Shrines as possible!
Best Base Locations
With the general tips covered, it's time to get into specific locations we'd recommend setting down your bases. The below suggestions will cover four of the areas across Embervale. We've skipped a recommendation for the Low Meadows because it's a smaller area between the Nomad Highlands and Springlands, and the Ancient Spire there covers it adequately.
Springlands: Fort Kelvin
In the Springlands, there's a place called Fort Kelvin, where the Vukah dwells. It'll mean clearing out a number of Vukah enemies to be able to take it over, but it's worth doing so. There are a number of pre-established buildings in the fort, which make for a good place to stick a Flame Altar.
What's more, it has a variety of handy resources within easy reach, which will respawn over time. You can pick up Wax, Resin, and plenty of Animal Fur (which you'll also get from slaying the Vukah). Plus, there are a number of chests in the vicinity that will give you a variety of weapons and there's usually a pack of wolves prowling the area, so you can grab some additional bones and fur by taking them down.
Fort Kelvin is also a handy location in the center of the Springlands and Revelwood, and close to the Pillars of Creation, which takes you through to the Nomad Highlands. It sits in the center of two Flame Sanctums and two Flame Shrines, and you'll find the Glimmer Rock Mine to the east of it.
It's also close to Scavenger camps just as Fawnsong Frontier and the Hill of Scavengers, so you can easily visit them for all of your Metal Scrap needs. Combine this with the two Ancient Spires in Revelwood and Springlands, and you have a useful area that allows you to reach plenty of Scavenger camps, tombs, Shroud Roots, and more, as marked on the picture above.
Revelwood: Pikemead's Reach
Sitting in the north of Embervale, you can find Pikemead's Reach. It overlooks the Pike and the Imperial Guardians, which will be the point where your journey through Revelwood culminates in the battle against the Fell Wispwyvern. As part of the Reach the Capital, Pikemead's Reach quest, you'll make your way to the capital from Revelwood, via the Ancient Spire.
Once you've crossed the large area of Shroud, we'd recommend going up to the Pike on the eastern side and finding the mountainous area. Do this before you try to take on the Fell Wispwyvern because it can be a challenging battle. Though it's a bit of a trek to get up the mountains, it's worth making the effort to create a base that will allow you to return to your main one and stock up, should you need to.
After defeating the beast, you can upgrade your Flame Altar, and you'll be able to enter the Nomad Highlands. This area of Pikemead's Reach sits at the halfway point between the two Ancient Spires in the Revelwood area and the Nomad Highlands, meaning you can glide down into central space between them.
You'll also find two Flame Sanctums and three Flame Shrines nearby, plus, Shroud Roots. Being so close to a large area of the Shroud also allows you to drop into it quickly to pick up essentials such as Shroud Wood, and unique items dropped by enemies within it.
Nomad Highlands: South of Umbral Hollow
The Ancient Spire for the Nomad Highlands sits high up in the northeast of the area, but the majority of the biome is taken up by the large area of Shroud called the Umbral Hollow. Though the Ancient Spire for the Low Meadows looks like it's close to the area marked on the map above, it's quite tricky to reach this area without putting in a lot of work to mine a path up. The easiest way to get there is through the Pillars of Creation.
However, it's worth putting a base down by the southern side of the Umbral Hollow, so you have fast travel points in both the north of south, essentially covering the Nomad Highlands. The southern area will also allow you to reach plenty of Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums, as well as the Scavenger camps that are in the southeast of the Umbral Hollow. For an added bonus, there are lots of rocks that provide vantage points in the area marked above, and they also happen to be where you can mine for plenty of Copper Ore!
Kindlewastes
The Kindlewastes are incredibly vast in comparison to the other regions, so the points of interest are spread further out. The Ancient Spire sits on the eastern side of the Kindlewastes, and you'll enter it from the west after exploring the Nomad Highlands. To be able to see all that the area has to offer, you'll also need to upgrade your Flame Level up to 6. Otherwise, you'll only be able to access some of the Kindlewastes. For these reasons, we'd recommend creating a base in the northern part of the Kindlewastes first, unlocking the Ancient Spire, and then setting down a second base in the south.
When choosing where to position your base in the north, we'd recommend finding a spot high up just before you reach the Haunted Sun Temple. This will allow you to keep coming back if needed to stock up for the fight against Fell Sicklesythe. It also gives you easy access to the higher parts of the Kindlewastes, that sit above the Shroud, including Brittlebush.
For the south, wait until you've got your Flame Level to 6, and then create a base that sits all the way down the bottom of the map. You'll find in this area, there's lots of Lapislazuli to mine, and you'll be able to get to Ridgeback Mine to get Iron Ore, just as easily as you can from the Ancient Spire.
