The Hunt[]

[The end of the "Tell me what to do" cinematic plays. The scene opens to a snow-covered forest. A rabbit comes up from a hole and looks around, only to be shot in the neck by an arrow. Someone walks towards the rabbit, picking it up and removing the arrow. The camera pans upwards, revealing it is Ellie.]

Ellie: Oh, this won't last very long

[She puts the arrow away and walks towards Callus, tying the dead rabbit to his saddle. She looks away, noticing a deer. She grabs Callus' reins, tossing them onto a branch.]

Ellie: You'll just startle it.

[She runs towards the deer. The "Tell me what to do" cinematic ends. Ellie slides down a small ledge deeper in to the forest. The player now controls her.]

Ellie: Where'd you go? [The deer races past her.] There he is.

[She chases the buck and wounds it with an arrow. It spooks again afterwards.]

Ellie: Shit, he heard that.

[Eventually she gets in another good shot, but it still runs away.]

Ellie: Oh man. How are you still alive?

[She pursues it, reaching an old mining camp.]

Ellie: What is this place? Everything's cool. This place is not creepy at all. Oh

[In the snow, Ellie runs towards the dead deer, still impaled with her arrow. She observes it only to turn around and aim her arrow at a tree.]

Ellie: Who's there? Come out!

[Two men come out from behind a tree, David and James. David, carrying a rifle on his back, holds out his hand.]

David: Hello... we just want to talk.

Ellie: Any sudden moves and I put one right between your eyes. [Aims arrow at James.] Ditto for buddy-boy over there. [Aims back at David.] What do you want?

David: Name's David, this here's my friend, James. We're from a larger group - women, children - we're all very, very hungry.

Ellie: So am I - women and children - all very hungry too.

David: Well, maybe we could, ah, trade you for some of that meat there. What do you need? Weapons, ammo, clothes -

Ellie: Medicine! Do you have any antibiotics?

David: We do. Back at the camp. [Approaching Ellie.] You're welcome to follow us-

Ellie: I'm not following you anywhere. [David stops moving.] Buddy-boy can go get it. He comes back with what I need, the deer is all yours. Anyone else shows up-

David: You put one right between my eyes.

Ellie: That's right

[David turns to James.]

David: Two bottle of the penicillin and a syringe. Make it fast. [Ellie points her arrow at James.] Go on.

[Puzzled, James leaves. Ellie points her arrow at David.]

Ellie: I'll take that rifle.

David: Of course.

[David walks up to Ellie, placing the rifle in front of her.]

Ellie: Back up.

[David walks back a few feet. Ellie puts her bow and arrow away then picks up the rifle. She pulls back the bolt to see it is loaded then aims it at David. There is a long pause as David looks around.]

David: He's probably gonna be a while. You ah, mind is we take some shelter from the cold?

Ellie: [Gesturing to the deer.] Bring him with us.

[David walks up to the dead deer, grabbing it's antlers and proceeds to drag it towards a small barn. Ellie keeps the rifle trained on him. The scene cuts to David tending a small fire. He is inside the barn, with Ellie sat a few feet away holding the rifle.]

David: There. You know, you really shouldn't be out here all on your own.

Ellie: I don't like company.

David: I see. What's your name?

Ellie: Why?

David: Look, I understand it's not easy to trust a couple of strangers. Whoever's hurt, you clearly care about them. I'm sure it's gonna be just fine.

Ellie: We'll see.

[In the distance, infected cry out. Ellie and David both stand up, checking the windows. A clicker runs into the room, stopping at the door as it listens for sound. Ellie steps back, causing the clicker to roar and race towards her. However, a gun fires, two bullets striking the clicker down. David, holding a revolver, walks up to the wounded infected, killing it with a bullet to the head.]

Ellie: You had another gun?

David: Sorry. [He looks out an empty doorway. He then holds his hand out towards Ellie.] Okay. I'd really like my rifle back now.

Ellie: No. You have your pistol.

David: [Returning to the doorway.] I hope you know how to use that thing.

Ellie: I've had some practice.

[The "Name's David" cinematic ends. The player resumes control over Ellie. David shuts the door and puts a tarp on the deer.

David: No matter what, we have to keep them out. [Of the deer.] Let's hope they don't find him. Cover the windows.

Ellie: Okay.

David: Make every shot count now.

Ellie: I've done this before.

[Numerous runners charge at the mine, attempting to smash through the barricaded windows. David and Ellie kills them.]

David: You weren't kidding. You're a better shot with that thing than I am. [Begins pushing a large container.] Gimme a hand with this.

[Ellie runs over and begins pushing the container.]

Ellie: Agh, c'mon, c'mon.

[They barricade a window, but a clicker grabs Ellie. David pulls her from its grip and shoots it in the head, saving her.]

Ellie: Oh shit.

David: Nothin' over here. Oh lord, there's a whole lot of 'em comin' at us. Don't let 'em come through the windows.

[Numerous runners and clickers advance on their room. Ellie and David manage to defeat them but a horde of infected begin to surface in the distance.]

David: Screw it. We're gettin' outta this room! [He kicks down a boarded-up door nearby.] All right, kid. This way.

[Clickers begin smashing the windows in the corridor.]

Ellie: Fucking infected.

[Ellie and David make up a set of stairs.]

David: C'mon. I'll block their path. Cover the stairs! [He barricades the stairway.] Follow me. Through here.

[He kicks open another door and proceeds in to the next room.]

Ellie: Okay. [Follows.] Do you know where you're going?

David: I've never set foot in this place.

Ellie: Oh. Great.

David: It's clear. This way.

Ellie: Right behind you.

[The pair run up to a walkway.]

David: How you holdin' up?

Ellie: You don't need to worry about me.

David: All right. Stay close.

[He jumps over a catwalk barricade. Ellie jumps after him but the floor buckles on impact.]

Ellie: Oh shit!

[Ellie falls down to the ground floor.]

David: Hey, kid -- you all right?

Ellie: I'm fine...

David: More clickers. Get outta there!

[David flees from two clickers. Ellie returns to her feet and progresses through the ground floor. She eventually climbs back up but a clicker blocks her way. David shoots it dead.]

David: You all right?

Ellie: Oh, there you are.

David: C'mon -- door's this way. There. That ladder could work.

Ellie: Here. C'mere, boost me up.

[Ellie positions herself by the wall. David prepares to lift her up.]

David: Okay, ready?

Ellie: Hang on...

David: All right. [Boosts her up.] You be quick...keep a lookout for those things.

Ellie: I know.

[She kills a clicker on the catwalk.]

David: What's goin' on up there? Everything all right?

Ellie: Yeah, it's okay. All right. Here you go.

[She drops the ladder down.]

David: C'mon. All right, look out. [Kicks open another doorway.] Through here. Come on, kid! We need to find a way outta here. [They run across an enclosed bridge towards an elevator room.] There's gotta be a way outta here.

[In a far elevator room, Ellie finds a corpse.;;]

Ellie: Geez. Looks like someone already fought those things and lost.

David: Ah, Lord. I've been lookin' for these boys. Doesn't matter. Grab their gear. I'm gonna look for an exit. Keep your eyes open for anything we can use!

Ellie: See anything?

David: It's a dead end. How on earth did they use this building?

Ellie: So what do we do?

David: We hold our ground.

Ellie: Is there any other choice?

David: We die. Get ready.

[Several runners climb onto the roof and begin smashing through the windows.]

Ellie: You hear that? They're on the roof!

David: I know!

[They kill the runners.]

David: We're doin' fine, kid.

Ellie: It doesn't feel like it.

David: Just stay focused. We'll make it. Here come more!

[More runners joined by clickers begin running up the bridge. Ellie and David kill them as well.]

Ellie: How many of these things are there?

David: I have no idea. Just keep at it.

[They hear an odd infected noise.]

David: That doesn't sound good.

Ellie: It's a bloater!

David: A what?!

Ellie: One of those big fucking guys.

[The bloater jumps down from the roof onto their level and begins attacking them. They slay the bloater. After a while, all goes quiet]

David: Hey, kid!

Ellie: Yeah?

David: You know, I think we did it.

Ellie: Like we killed all of 'em?

David: Don't sound so disappointed.

Ellie: More like disbelief.

David: I'll check the bridge.

[They go to the bridge.]

David: Listen.

Ellie: No infected.

David: No infected. What'd I tell ya? All right. Let's head on back, check on that buck of ours.

[The "You're gonna make it" cinematic begins. David and Ellie return to the shack, the fire nearly burnt out. David walks over to it, picking up a stick and begins tending it again. He looks at Ellie, who sits across from him, having placed her rifle down beside her.]

David: You handled yourself pretty nicely back there. Ha, whew. I'd say we make a pretty good team.

Ellie: [Warming her hands on the growing fire.] Psshh. We got lucky.

David: Lucky? No, no... No such thing as luck. No you see I believe that everything happens for a reason.

Ellie: [Mocking tone.] Sure.

David: I do. And I can prove it to you. Now, this winter has been especially cruel. A few weeks back, I ah... sent a group of men out - nearby town to look for food. Only a few came back. [Getting into the story] They said that the others had been ah, slaughtered by a crazy man. And get this, he's - a crazy man traveling [Points his stick at Ellie] with a little girl. [Ellie's expression shifts to one of worry.] You see? Everything happens for a reason.

[Ellie reaches for the rifle, picks it up and stands away from David, aiming the rifle at him. David dismisses it, tending to the fire again. James enters the doorway, having heard the conversation. The others haven't noticed him. He draws his pistol and aims it at Ellie.]

David: Now don't get upset. It's not your fault [He sees James in the doorway. He looks at Ellie.] You're just a kid. James, lower the gun.

[Ellie turns, seeing James aiming at her. She does likewise.]

James: No way, David. I'm not gonna let her go.

David: [Insistent.] Lower the gun. [After several seconds, James complies albeit reluctantly. David turns back to the fire.] Now give her the medicine.

James: [He enters the room, taking out a bag of penicillin as he does so] The others won't be happy about this. [James tosses the bag at Ellie's feet.]

David: Yeah, well that's not your concern.

[Ellie reaches down and picks the bag up, still aiming at James. She begins edging towards the door.]

Ellie: [To James.] Move the fuck out of the way.

[James complies, moving towards David although he keeps watching Ellie as she reaches the doorway, still aiming at him.]

David: You won't survive long out there. [He looks at Ellie.] I can protect you.

Ellie: No thanks.

[Ellie runs off. David stares momentarily before tending the fire again. The scene cuts to Ellie running in the snow, she stops, looking back briefly before continuing. She eventually reaches Callus, still hooked to a branch.]

Ellie: [To Callus, removing his reins from the branch.] Let's get out of here.

[Ellie mounts Callus and races off. The scene cuts to the pair coming within sight of a small town. She dismounts Callus, pulling him towards a house. They enter a garage, where she shuts the door. She briefly stands with Callus before heading into another room. The scene cuts to Ellie running down a flight of stairs into a basement. She stops in front of Joel, lying on the floor with a blanket over him, shaking.]

Ellie: Joel? [Joel breathes.] Oh... [She bends down next to him.] I only managed to get a little bit of food. But... [She removes the penicillin from her bag.] I did get this. [Ellie puts back Joel's blanket.] Move your arm. [He does so and she pulls up his t-shirt, revealing his stitched up wound on him torso.] Oh... [She prepares the penicillin.] Here we go. [She injects it into him, causing him to grunt in pain. She removes the needle.] Sorry. All done. [She puts the syringe away and pulls Joel's blanket back over him. She lays down beside him as he shivers intensely.] You're gonna make it. [She rests her head on her bag and goes to sleep.]

[The scene cuts to daytime, where Ellie startles awake as Joel sleeps. She hears a noise and vaults onto an old washing machine, looking out a window. She sees a group of men wandering the area, appearing to be looking for someone. She realizes they are from David's group.]

Ellie: Oh, fuck. They tracked me. [She jumps down to Joel.] I'm gonna draw them away from here. I'll come back for you.

[She picks up her bag and runs up the stairs, leaving Joel behind. The "You're gonna make it" cinematic ends. Ellie leaves the garage, lowering the door quietly. She mounts Callus and begins riding towards the streets. Several of David's men roam the area.]

Ellie: Easy... Go... C'mon...

Man #1: Are you even sure she's here?

Man #2: Man, there were horse tracks down the fucking street. She's here.

[She tries sneaking by on Callus, but gets grabbed by one of David's men.]

Man #3: Hey! I got her! Get your ass ov--

[Ellie draws her switchblade and stabs him in the throat. The man falls to the ground. The other now face her in the distance.]

Man #2: What are you waiting for? Shoot her!

Man #1: But David said--

Man #2: Fuck David. Shoot her now!

Ellie: [To Callus.] Go!

[The player regains control over Ellie. Ellie rides through the deserted resort, evading gunfire from David's men.]

Man #4: There!

Man #5: Grab her!

[Ellie evades the street patrol but more men appear from inside the various houses, rifles in hand.]

Man #6: Aim for the horse! Don't let her through!

Man #7: Get your ass off that damn horse!

Man #8: Shit! She's running!

Man #9: She's getting away!

Ellie: Come get me, you fuckers!

[Ellie and Callus reach the town's exit but two more men appear on top a disused van.]

Man #10: Shoot the horse! Shoot the fucking horse!

[The last man aims with his hunting rifle and fires, shooting Callus straight through his neck. He lets out a cry before collapsing over the nearby ledge, throwing Ellie down a large hill. Callus lies motionless, dead. Ellie picks herself up, seeing Callus' corpse.]

Ellie: Oh man... No... Oh shit. Okay...

[Ellie gets up and begins running towards nearby cabins. The gun men above run to the ledge and look down.]

Man #10: She fell down the hill somewhere. I don't see her though.

Man #9: She's running for the cabins!

[Ellie takes refuge in a cabin nearby. She reaches the front where another group of David's men are searching for her.]

Man #11: Are we really killing her? David said he wants her alive.

Man #12: He doesn't get to make that call. James to me it's the girl from the university. How many of our guys were killed there?

Man #11: Oh shit. I didn't know that was her. Screw David, then. I ain't taking a chance with this.

Man #13: I just want to finish up and go home. I'm freezing my ass off.

[Ellie either evades or kills the rest and finds the exit along a broken cliffside path.]

Ellie: [Reads sign.] Nature track... Okay, that should get me out of here. [Begins crossing ledge over the lake.] You got this, Ellie. Okay, don't fall in the water. Don't fall in. Oh, shit... Okay.

[She makes it across to find a blockage at a culvert.]

Ellie: Here we go. I got this. [Moves blockage.] Agh...

[She moves through the culvert to find a large hunting lodge on the riverbank.]

Ellie: That's the way back. Hang in there, Joel.

[Ellie moves towards the hunting lodge where more of David's men emerge on to the street.]

Man #14: Cover the grounds! Make sure she's not hiding somewhere over here!

[Ellie either kills the searchers or sneaks in to the lodge.]

Ellie: How do I get outta here? I don't wanna get trapped in here. Agh, where's the way out?

[As she moves towards the back end of the lodger, three more searchers spot her.]

Man #15: She's on this side of the lodge!

[Ellies kills the last pursuers and moves to the exit. She pushes against it, but just as she opens it, David grabs her from behind. Ellie draws her switchblade, but David grabs her arm and pulls her to the ground.]

David: Relax... Keeping you alive here. There you go. There you go.

[He knocks her out with a sleeper hold.]

Cabin Resort[]

[ The "By any means" cinematic starts. Ellie wakes up in a cell. James is just outside, using a meat cleaver to chop the limbs off of a human corpse. Crouching, Ellie approaches the gate, and sees James chop an arm from a corpse. She reacts with a quiet panic, causing James to turn to her. He puts the cleaver down and leaves the room. While gone, Ellie rattles the gate, trying to pry it open. After a few seconds, David enters the room with a tray of food. Ellie stops rattling the gate, looking at him.]

Ellie: Oh...

David: How are you feeling?

Ellie: Super.

David: Here. [David pushes the tray of food into Ellie's cage.] You should eat. I know you're hungry -- been out for quite some time.

Ellie: What is it?

David: It's deer.

Ellie: With some human helping on the side?

David: No. No, I promise. It's... just the deer meat.

Ellie: You're a fucking animal.

[Ellie bends down and starts eating the food.]

David: Oh. [David bends down, facing Ellie.] you're awfully quick to judgment. Considering you and your friend killed how many men?

Ellie: They didn't give us a choice.

David: And you think we have a choice? Is that it? You kill to survive... and so do we. We have to take care of our own. By any means necessary.

Ellie: So now what? You gonna chop me up into tiny pieces?

David: I'd rather not. Please tell me your name.

[Ellie shoves the food plate out of her cell, standing. David stares abashed.]

Ellie: You're so full of shit.

David: On the contrary, I've been, ah, [David stands.] been quite honest with you. Now I think it's your turn. It's the only way I'm gonna be able to convince the others.

Ellie: Convince them of what?

David: That you can come around. You have heart. You're loyal. And you're special.

[David places his hand over Ellie's, which was gripping the cage bars.]

Ellie: Oh...

[Ellie puts her hand on David's. After a moment, she then breaks his finger. She tries to grab his cell keys, but he grabs her arm, yanking her into the cell door, stunning her.]

Ellie: Oh, fuck...

David: [gripping his broken finger. To Ellie.] You stupid little girl. You are making it very difficult to keep you alive. What am I supposed to tell the others now?

Ellie: Ellie.

David: What?

Ellie: Tell them that... Ellie is the little girl that broke your fucking finger!

David: How did you put it? Hmm? Tiny pieces? See you in the morning, Ellie.

[David exits the room, leaving Ellie on the floor, alone. The scene cuts to Joel, who awakes in the cellar of a house with a sharp gasp. He grunts, slowly picking himself up to a kneeling position. He spies round the room.]

Joel: Ellie?

[Joel sees his bag. Standing up, he grabs it and puts it on. He then looks up the nearby staircase. The "By any means" cinematic ends. The player now controls Joel. He walks up the stairs and enters the main house.]

Joel: Ellie?! Where the hell are you? [He goes outside.] Ellie! Where'd she run off to?

[Joel moves down the street. As he reaches the end, a gate opens to reveal several of David's men still wandering the area.]

Cannibal #1: Oh shit! He's over there!

Joel: Shit.

[Joel draws his weapons and attacks the group. Shouting.] Where is she?

[He begins killing them. The rest of the group are filled with fear.]

Cannibal #2: Move it! Don't let him get ya!

[He slaughters all but two, who escape into a street. He chases them. He jumps a barricade only for one to grab him from behind.]

Cannibal #1: Gotcha, asshole. Finish him off!

Cannibal #2: [Approaches with a shiv.] Hold him still!

Cannibal #1: Oh shit!

[Joel kicks Cannibal #2 in the groin then headbutts Cannibal #1.]

Cannibal #1: Son of a bitch!

[Joel breaks free then turns around and slams the other man into the wall. The man collapses, heavily dazed.]

Joel: You come with me. [Kicks him then begins dragging him.] Come on...

Cannibal #1: Let me go. I'll...fuck you up...

[The scenes cuts to black. The "I believe him" cinematic begins. The scene opens to the sound of blows in a room. Joel is repeatedly striking Cannibal #1, tied to a radiator, in the face with his fists. Cannibal #2 is tied to a chair, facing away from Joel and Cannibal #1. A table is set up next to Cannibal #2, with a small knife on it. A pipe is also on the floor.]

Cannibal #1: What do you want? [Joel hits him.] What the fuck? [Joel hits him again, then stops, clutching his torso.]

Joel: You wait here. [He crosses over to a table. He grabs the knife and positions a chair in front of Cannibal #2.] Now... [He sits on the chair.] The girl... is she alive?

Cannibal #2: What girl? I don't know no girl. [Joel stabs Cannibal 2 in the knee.] Fuck!

Joel: Focus right here. [He slaps Cannibal #2's face.] Right here. Or I'll pop your goddamn knee off. The girl.

Cannibal #2: [Nodding.] She's alive. She's David's newest pet.

Joel: [With a tender rage.] Where?

[Joel twists the knife in Cannibal #2's knee, causing him to cry out once more.]

Cannibal #2: In the town. In the town.

[Joel forces the knife from Cannibal #2's knee then shoves the hilt into his mouth. He takes out a map of the area, holding it up to the man's face.]

Joel: Now you're gonna mark it on the map. [Pointing to Cannibal #1.] And it better be the same exact spot your buddy points too. Mark it.

[Cannibal #2 dabs a spot on the map with the blood on the knife before spitting it out to the floor. Joel puts the map away.]

Cannibal 2: It's right there. You can verify it. Go ask him. Go on. He'll tell ya. [Joel walks behind Cannibal 2.] I ain't lyin'. I ain't lyin'.

[Joel grabs Cannibal #2, putting him in a choke hold, beginning to choke him out. After several seconds, he snaps his neck, killing him. He lets go, allowing the chair to fall backwards onto the floor. Cannibal #1 has been watching the whole scene. He looks up to Joel.]

Cannibal #1: [Fidgeting.] Fuck you, man. He told you what you wanted. [Joel picks up the pipe.] I ain't telling you shit.

Joel: That's all right. I believe him.

Cannibal #1: No, wait!

[Joel raises the pipe, smashing it into Cannibal #1's face. The scene cuts to black. It then opens to Ellie asleep in the cage at David's town. James comes in, picking her up. David waits outside.]

James: Wake-y, wake-y. Come on.

Ellie: [Wakes up, resisting.] Let go!

[Seeing James struggling, David jumps in, grabbing Ellie's shoulder.]

Ellie: Stop! [She bites David's hand]

[David winces. He then knees her in the stomach before grabbing and tossing her onto a table with James' help. James holds down Ellie's left arm as David does likewise with her right arm. David then picks up a meat cleaver and raises it.]

David: I warned you.

Ellie: [breathlessly.] I'm infected! I'm infected!

David: [Amused.] Really!

Ellie: And so are you. [Tugging her right arm.] Right there. Roll up my sleeve. [Demanding.] Look at it!

David: [To James.] I'll play along.

[He stabs the cleaver into the table, just away from Ellie's head. He then rolls up her sleeve, seeing her healed bite mark. He looks shocked as James stares at him, visibly shaken.]

Ellie: [To David.] What'd you say? Everything happens for a reason right?

[James lets go of Ellie's left arm, shakily pointing at her bite.]

James: What the hell is that?

David: She would've turned by now. It can't be real.

[David lets go of Ellie's arm, focusing on his bitten hand.]

James: Looks pretty fucking real to me!

[Seizing the moment, Ellie grabs the meat cleaver and hacks it into James' neck. She then rolls off the table as David draws his revolver and fires, missing her. Ellie lands on the floor as James collapses, bleeding to death. She runs towards the doorway, pushing a hacked animal corpse as she does. David fires again, but misses. Ellie hides next to the doorway. David begins to creep towards the door as James dies. Ellie spies her switchblade on a shelf. She takes it.]

Ellie: Okay.

[Ellie spots an open window. She runs towards it, jumping through. The "I believe him" cinematic ends. The player regains control over Ellie as she lands on the ground below.]

Ellie: What the fuck is wrong with these people?

David: [At the window.] Where you going, Ellie? This is my town!

[David runs from the window. Ellie takes shelter in a nearby storage room.]

Ellie: I need a gun. [Searches area and retrieves a revolver.] Okay, I can do this.

[She moves to the front of the store. A snow storm rains down on the town. David runs out to meet two of his people in the snow storm.]

Male cannibal: We heard gunshots!

David: Infected!

Male cannibal: What?

David: The girl. She's infected and she got out.

Female cannibal: This is bad, David.

David: All right, I need you to round up everyone who isn't armed and get 'em to clear outta here. We're gonna find that girl and we're gonna kill her.

Female cannibal: Oh my god. I'll take the kids to the shelter.

[David and his two people split up, the male alerting the rest of town by ringing the town's bell. Several cannibals with revolver begin patrolling the streets.]

Ellie: Oh fuck.

[Ellie moves out from her hiding space and begins sneaking past the patrol men.]

Cannibal #3: Tired of this shit. He's crossed the line this time.

Cannibal #4: I've been saying this for months.

Cannibal #3: We've indulged him enough. This girl killed our men and now she's infected.

Cannibal #4: Let's clean this mess up...then we can have a town meeting. Put his leadership up to a vote.

Ellie: They're everywhere.

[Ellie avoids the first patrol and heads deeper into town.]

Cannibal #5: What if she bites someone?

Cannibal #6: Relax. She's not biting anybody.

Cannibal #5: I'm saying we could have a real situation here.

Cannibal #7: We already have a situation and we're gonna take care of it. Now stay focused. Let's find her.

[Ellie manages to climb aboard a dumpster and use it to enter the back of a candle-lie restaurant. There are several broken plates scattered on the floor. Ellie heads towards the front exit. As she opens the door, David grabs her from the side.]

David: You're easy to track.

[They struggle, with David knocking over a lit lamp, which causes the front tables to catch fire. He manages to takes Ellie's revolver and knocks her down. He aims the gun at her.]

David: How did you do it?

[The fire in the background expands, setting the wall ablaze. The fire distracts David, allowing Ellie to hide. David takes out a set of keys and locks the door.]

David: That's all right. There's nowhere to go! You want out? You're gonna have to come get these keys. [Begins searching the restaurant.] I know you're not infected. No one who's infected fights this hard to stay alive. So what is it, Ellie? I gotta admit, you had me back there. For a second, you shook my faith. But only for a second. Oh, hey, Ellie? I'm sorry about your horse. I truly am. I hope you take comfort in knowing we won't waste any part of him.

[The fire begins to spread within the restaurant, with smoke filling the air.]

Ellie: [Whispers.] Ah, you fuck.

David: You know, I...I wish you hadn't killed James. He's a good kid -- just doing his job. In fact, all those people you killed. It's just gonna make our group stronger. Fewer mouths to feed. Stronger survivors. Ellie! Ellie, come on. I know you're dying to say something to me.

Ellie: [Whispers.] Creepy piece of shit.

David: No? Nothin'? Sure about that? All right then.

[Ellie ambushes David from behind, stabbing him in the neck. He staggers as Ellie jumps back and hides. He attempts to shoot her but misses.]

David: That was good, kid. It's gonna be all right. [Puts his revolver away and takes out a machete.]

David: You know, you keep surprising me. It's a shame you wouldn't come around. Give up now and I promise to be quick. Promise.

Ellie: [Whispers.] Yeah, go fuck yourself.

David: Okay then. Don't say I didn't give you a chance. You know, I love how you think that you're better than this. Better than us. But you're not.

Ellie: [Whispers.] Ah, you crazy fuck.

David: It didn't have to be this way, you know. You brought this on yourself. You did.

[Ellie ambushes him a second time, this time stabbing his stomach. David stumbles back, swinging his machete as Ellie retreats again to cover.]

David: Run, little rabbit, run.

[The fire has now completely engulfed the restaurant, causing smoke to cover the entire area. David stops walking around openly and instead takes cover and begins to move around stealthily in the smoke. Eventually though, Ellie manages to get behind him and jumps on to his back. She stabs her in the shoulder. David resists, slamming himself and her on to a table before grabbing her hair and tossing her over his head. The pair collapse to the floor, both knocked out. The scene switches to Joel, who approaches Silver Lake's outskirts. The player now controls him. Joel runs in to the town, where more cannibals are patrolling the area.]

Cannibal #8: This is pointless. I can't see a thing.

Cannibal #9: Just keep searching. If she comes through here, we gotta catch her.

[Joel progresses through the area, using the snow storm for cover.]

Cannibal #10: We should be guarding the shelter. We got an infected running around in the town and we're guarding the damn exit.

Hunter #11: Look. This kid is deadly and we don't know where she's gonna turn up. Just keep your eyes and ears open.

[Joel kills the guards and takes refuge inside. He finds Ellie's backpack.]

Joel: What is this? Why is Ellie's stuff here?

[He steps into a meat locker filled with human corpses strung up as prepared for eating.]

Joel: Oh, Christ. I gotta find her. I gotta find her.

[He steps onto main street, seeing the burning restaurant in the distance.]

Joel: Holy shit. Ellie...

[The scene cuts back inside the restaurant. Ellie awakens but is heavily dazed. She turns over to see David's machete under a chair. She crawls towards it only for David to stand up and kick her hard.]

David: I knew you had heart. Y'know, it's okay to give up. Ain't no shame in it. I guess not. Just not your style, is it? [He kicks her again, then crawls on top of her, pinning her down.] You can try beggin'.

Ellie: Fuck you.

David: [Turning her upright.] You think you know me? Huh? Well, let me tell you somethin'. You have no idea what I'm capable of.

[David begins to choke Ellie. The "It's me" cinematic begins. As David chokes Ellie, she reaches for his machete, slashing his arm with it. David rolls off of her; Ellie then gets on top of him. David cries out as Ellie hacks him several times in the face. After several hits, Joel runs up to her and pulls her off.]

Joel: Ellie! Stop. Stop.

Ellie: [Not recognizing Joel.] No, don't fucking touch me!

Joel: It's okay. [He turns Ellie towards him.] It's me. It's me. It's me. Look. Look. [He grabs Ellie's face, making her look at him.] It's me...

Ellie: He tried to-

[Ellie breaks down in tears. Joel pulls Ellie towards him, cradling her]

Joel: [Sympathetically.] Oh, baby girl... It's okay. It's okay.

Ellie: Joel...

Joel: It's okay now.

[The sound of their voices fade as the music grows. Joel pulls Ellie's head away, saying something that she nods in response to before helping her to her feet and leading her out of the restaurant. The camera pans towards the machete, blood-soaked and sticking upwards. The "It's me" cinematic ends.]
