Geography
With a total area of 70,280 km² (27,135 mi²), Ireland occupies just over 80% of the island of Ireland and is thus also part of the British Isles – but not part of the British "Islands". It's land mass is a little bit smaller than the area of Maine or Schottland. Ireland is the 22nd largest country in Europe and ranks 121st in the world. More than half of the population (64.2%) lives within cities. Every ninth inhabitant lives in the metropolis of Dublin alone.Ireland has a total coastline of 1,448 km (899.7 mi). Also about 270 partly uninhabited islands belong to the national territory. Ireland lies comparatively low at an average altitude of 118 meters (390 ft) above sea level. The highest mountain peak is Carrauntoohil at 1039 meters (3408 ft), located in the extreme southwest in Killarney National Park.
With Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom is the only directly bordering neighboring country of Ireland.

Climate in Ireland
Ireland has a temperate maritime climate, which is significantly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Mild winters and cool summers prevail in the country. The western and northern coastal regions receive more precipitation due to the prevailing southwesterly winds, while the eastern and inland areas are somewhat drier. The Gulf Stream moderates temperatures and keeps them relatively mild throughout the year. The Atlantic influences thus create a climate ideal for lush vegetation and the bright green landscapes for which Ireland is known.Average daytime and nighttime temperatures

However, the actual proper city is much smaller with only 544,000 inhabitants. The difference to metropolitan regions, i.e. conurbations with several cities, is even greater.
