Geography

Thailand is located in the north of the Indochinese peninsula and borders Myanmar and the Indian Ocean to the west, Cambodia and Laos to the east and Malaysia to the far south. The elongated south of the peninsula between the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand is particularly striking. The world-famous beaches of Ko Samui, Phuket and Krabi are also located here. Of the 1,430 or so islands, Ko Phi Phi (The Beach) and Ko Phing Kan (James Bond) have been made famous by international films. In total, the coastlines add up to a length of 3,219 km.

However, most of the country lies off the peninsula north of the capital Bangkok. The landscape is characterized by mountains, plains and rivers. The Tenasserim Mountains stretch along the Burmese border into the highlands of Chiang Rai. In the center lies the Phetchabun Mountains, a foothill of the Himalayas with Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain at an altitude of 2565 meters. In the east, the Mekong forms the natural border with Laos.

Thailand has a total area of around 513,120 km² and is therefore about three quarters the size of Texas.

Population distribution

With 71.70 million inhabitants per 513,120 km², the population density is 139.7 per km². However, urbanization is increasing significantly in conurbations such as Bangkok. At 52.9%, more than half of the population live within the cities. Around one in seven inhabitants live within the city limits of Bangkok alone. In terms of the metropolitan region, it is almost one in five.

The far north of Thailand is the least populated, with a population density of just 67 inhabitants per km². It is followed by the south with around 113 and Isaan in the east with 123 inhabitants/km². Central Thailand clearly stands out here with a figure of over 200.

The difference between the urban area and the city proper alone can be considerable. Nonthaburi, for example, has an urban population of 798,000. However, the actual proper city is much smaller with only 254,000 inhabitants. The difference to metropolitan regions, i.e. conurbations with several cities, is even greater.
