Geography

The Philippines is an archipelago in the South China Sea, northeast of the island of Borneo and about 350 km south of Taiwan. The country consists of 7,641 islands and has a total area of 300,000 km². The total coastline is 36,289 km long. This makes the country only three quarters the size of California, but with 115.56 million inhabitants it has a significantly higher population density of 385.2 per km². Only slightly less than half of all inhabitants (48.0%) live within the cities, with the metropolitan region of Manila being by far the largest in the country.

The Philippines are of volcanic origin and part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. There are several active volcanoes and mountain ranges that were formed by the folding of the submarine continental plates. Running roughly parallel to the east coast is the Philippine Trench, up to 10 km deep, where the Pacific Plate slides under the Philippine Plate. On average, the country lies at an altitude of 442 meters above sea level. The highest peak, at 2,954 meters, is the volcano Mount Apo on the island of Mindanao in the south. The largest highland area lies at 2,500 meters with the Cordillera Central in northern Luzon.

Climate in the Philippines

The Philippines have a tropical climate with year-round high temperatures between 28 and 34 degrees Celsius. In southern Mindanao, temperatures and humidity are usually moderately lower. Only in the few higher mountainous regions near Baguio (Northern Luzon) temperatures are below 25°C in summer. The rainy season provides heavier rainfall and higher humidity from May to October. The western and northern coastal regions usually receive more rainfall.

The country lies in the Pacific typhoon belt and is therefore also regularly affected by tropical cyclones.

Regions and divisions

Of the country's more than 7000 islands, only 860 are inhabited. Only 60 are over 100 square kilometers in size. The two largest by far are Luzon with 109,965 km² in the north and Mindanao with 97,530 km² in the south. The 13,074 km² island of Negros follows at a considerable distance. In total, the country is divided into 17 administrative regions, which in turn are made up of 81 provinces. A much coarser and more geographical division is based on the major regions of Luzon (including Palawan), Mindanao (including the Sulu Archipelago) and the Visayas with all the islands in between.

The difference between the urban area and the city proper alone can be considerable. Manila, for example, has an urban population of 24,922,000. However, the actual proper city is much smaller with only 1,847,000 inhabitants. The difference to metropolitan regions, i.e. conurbations with several cities, is even greater.
