Iran is a country between the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea. The land has a total area of 1,648,195 km² (636,371 mi²) and a total coastline of 2,440 km (1,516.1 mi). This land area is approximately 237% of the area of Texas. Iran is thus one of the largest countries in Asia and the 18th biggest in the world. A considerable share of the inhabitants (77%) belongs to the urban population. Every tenth inhabitant lives in Tehran alone.Iran lies at an average elevation of 1305 m above sea level and is therefore one of the highest countries in the world. The highest mountain peak (Damawand) is at 5,604 meters. The country has 45 islands in the open sea. There are direct national borders with the seven neighboring countries Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan. The distance between New York City and the Capital Tehran is about 9,870 km (6,133 mi).

Climate in Iran
The climate in Iran is subtropical, so it is much drier and warmer than in the most parts of the US or Central Europe. Only in a few humid months per year is the intensity of rain a bit higher. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 15 and 38 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 48 °C.
