Geography

Bangladesh is a country at the Bay of Bengal and is mostly enclosed by India. The land has a total area of 147,630 km² (57,000 mi²) and a total coastline of 580 km (360.4 mi). This land area is approximately 72% of the area of Minnesota. Bangladesh is thus the 26th smallest country in Asia and ranked 94th in the world. With 1,160 inhabitants per km², it is also one of the most densely populated countries. Most of the population (60%) resides within rural regions.

Bangladesh is very deep with an average elevation of only 85 m above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Mowdok Mual) is at 1,045 meters. The country has about 150 islands. There are direct national borders with the two neighboring countries Myanmar and India. The distance between New York City and the Capital Dhaka is about 12,690 km (7,885 mi).

Climate in Bangladesh

The climate in Bangladesh is largely determined by its location between the Himalayas and the Bay of Bengal. Subtropical conditions prevail with warm and predominantly dry conditions. Depending on the season, average daily temperatures range between 24 and 32 degrees Celsius. Especially during the hot summer months, they rise regionally up to 35 °C. The monsoon season usually falls between June and September and brings considerable rainfall from the Indian Ocean to the entire country.

The difference between the urban area and the city proper alone can be considerable. Thakurgaon, for example, has an urban population of 852,000. However, the actual proper city is much smaller with only 100,000 inhabitants. The difference to metropolitan regions, i.e. conurbations with several cities, is even greater.
