Geography

Chile is a country in north-south direction along the South American Andes and directly on the Pacific. The land has a total area of 756,700 km² (292,163 mi²) and a total coastline of 6,435 km (3,998.5 mi). This land area is approximately 109% of the area of Texas. Chile is thus one of the largest countries in the Americas and the 38th biggest in the world. An exceptionally high proportion of residents (88%) belongs to the urban population.

Chile lies at an average elevation of 1871 m above sea level and is therefore one of the highest countries in the world. The highest mountain peak (Nevado Ojos del Salado) is at 6,893 meters. The country has about 5,000 partially uninhabited islands. There are direct national borders with the three neighboring countries Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. The distance between New York City and the Capital Santiago is about 8,260 km (5,133 mi).

Climate in Chile

For a country with a north-south extent of over 3900 km, it is not possible to describe the climate in general. In Chile, a subtropical climate dominates. In the summer months there is hardly any precipitation and the usual evaporation ensures a strong dryness. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 13 and 25 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 31 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 6 °C in a month's average.

The difference between the urban area and the city proper alone can be considerable. Santiago, for example, has an urban population of 7,171,000. However, the actual proper city is much smaller with only 536,000 inhabitants. The difference to metropolitan regions, i.e. conurbations with several cities, is even greater.
