Bernard Fitzmartin

Bernard Fitzmartin is a resident of Metropolis. He is the Director of Special Projects at S.T.A.R. Labs working alongside Dr. Espenson, and is an ally to the Titans. He creates a super suit for Gar Logan, as well as a bo staff for Tim Drake, the latter of whom he develops feelings for and enters a relationship with. Bernard becomes a victim of Brother Blood's game and falls into a coma.

Biography[]

Early life[]

At some point Bernard became employed at S.T.A.R. Labs and eventually became the Director of Special Projects. During this time he personally met Clark Kent, and may also have encountered other members of the Justice League such as Bruce Wayne.^[1]

Meeting the Titans[]

Bernard meets with the Titans alongside his colleague Dr. Espenson, and passes on a letter from Clark Kent to Conner apologizing for his sudden absence.^[1] He provides Gar with a suit that will shift with him, joking that Gar's days of stripping in public are over, and allows the hero to test it out. He laments over the destruction over his Morphology laboratory and Gar's gorilla, velociraptor and armadillo forms apparent dislike of it but does not seem angry with Gar about it. Later, he gives Dick and Conner specially designed spectacles and guides them both through a virtual observatory display illustrating the reason for Superman's absence and notices the same as Dick that Conner greatly resembles Clark with glasses on. Before the Titans leave Bernard approaches Tim in order to give him both his number on a business card and a bo-staff for Tim to learn how to wield, as the young man is set to begin his training to be the next Robin, and once outside reveals to the team an vastly upgraded RV with a Porsche stored underneath it. Bernard hands over the keys to Dick and smiles as the Titans look at their new vehicles.

Personality[]

Bernard is a studious and intelligent man who's smarts enabled him to rise to the status of Director of Special Projects at a leading research facility. He's shown to be well-spoken and compassionate, and open with his appreciation for others including the Titans and Tim. He's appears patient and understanding, as he does not blame or get angry with Gar for the destruction of his laboratory and tolerates Conner's new persona, respecting Conner's wish to be referred to as 'Mr.Luthor'. He's likely a trustworthy person as he seems to know certain secret identities of the Justice League and has worked with a number of them in the past. He has a dry sense of humor and has a nerdy side shown when he makes a Pokémon reference about Mother Mayhem's serpents to Tim.^[2]

• The surname "Fitzmartin" is potentially a reference to Meghan Fitzmartin, writer of Batman: Urban Legends #4 in which Bernard's Prime Earth counterpart first appeared.^[3]

• Bernard Fitzmartin is an adaptation of Bernard Dowd, the boyfriend of Tim Drake in DC Comic's Prime Earth.
  • His first name might also be an allusion to Dr. Bernard Klein, the chief scientist for STAR Labs in the Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman TV series.
