Valentine is a character in the Guilty Gear series that appears in Guilty Gear 2 -Overture-. A living copy of Aria Hale, Valentine has a personality of stone, speaking only when she explains her motives.

Design[]

Her style of dress is something similar to a Gothic type of style. She also wears headgear that resembles a pair of Bat's Wings. She also has two white antennae sprouting from the sides of her head.

While her physical appearace seems to be identical to Aria Hale

Personality[]

She corresponds to matters in a mechanical way, showing no signs of emotion or desire. Since there are no intonations in her behavior or in her speech, she is intimidating because it seems like a doll talking. She often mentions that she is "running errands for mother". However, when Sol and company pursue Valentine to the Backyard, she starts to become irritated of them, developing her first emotions in the process: frustration and rage.

Story[]

Background[]

Valentine is created by the Universal Will to carry out the entity’s errands in arranging the extermination of humanity.

Guilty Gear 2 -Overture-[]

She later leads her Vizuel army to attack the city against Ky Kiske's army. Her goal is to obtain the "Key", which are the Maiden of the Grove's cells, to open the Cube. Her assault caused a lot of casualties, but still she failed to find the Key she was searching for. However, when Sol and Sin return to Illyria to help the king, her backup plan is revealed: to take Sin's cells instead, as he is the offspring of Ky Kiske and the Maiden of the Grove. She succeeds in obtaining the Key and brainwashes Sin.

She used her Vizuel army to guard her while she was opening the portal to the Backyard, but Ky and his army arrived to defeat it. Sol and his company then pursued Valentine to the Backyard. When she realized that all her plans failed, she became frustrated and finally developed emotions. This sudden flow of emotions drove her into an extremely violent state, turning her into a dark copy of Justice. After being defeated in her Gear form, she transformed in a gigantic fortress-like Megadeath Class Gear and the final battle started. When fighting Sol, memories of Aria manifested themselves as voices around her. She was eventually defeated by Sol, and remembered his real name, Frederick, and told him "it's okay", before fading away.

In the epilogue, That Man says to Raven that the next Universal Will attack will be more difficult to handle, Raven agrees, expecting that it would be much harder to find the other Valentine, to which That Man replies that it could be the other way around - tens of thousands Valentines will appear, making it arduous to deflect them.

Abilities[]

Valentine is similar to A.B.A in which they both wield unconventional weapons. Valentine fights using a balloon that she calls Lucifero. The balloon appears to have magic powers, such as shapeshifting into a mace-like weapon for melee or firing projectiles in form of missiles and energy bursts. She also has access to the Soul Sinker system, which allows her to generate her own Master Ghost(soul) into physical reality as well as create her Servants, the Vizuel. It is commented that her magical energy is incredibly high and she can use spells that are outside the realm of conventional knowledge, to the point where Sol and Sin cannot dispel her seals or barriers and could not harm her with magical attacks until Izuna modified their abilities. She can also brainwash her enemies with a form of Mind Control similar to Justice's, using said ability on Izuna's Youkai companions as well as Sin. She can sublimate(dissemble) Gears by accessing the Backyard and dismantling their core data. When she succumbs to her anger, she will transform into a large mecha-like being similar in appearance and abilities to Justice. She can also transform even further, becoming an techno-organic, multi-limbed "airship" that increases her offensive abilities.

Allusions[]

  • Her name could potentially be an allusion to multiple sources.
  • Her specials, Cassius, Judas, and Brutus, are named after the three historical traitors who are depicted as 'half-eaten' in Lucifer's mouth in the 9th Circle of Hell in Dante's Inferno.
  • Her "Untie the Chains of Chiron" special takes its name from Chiron, a centaur in Greek mythology known for training many heroes.
  • Aside from the "demonic" references Valentine's servants are named after various sweets, while some of her servants have the appearance of Cafe Maids. Her attack "Calvados" is a reference to a certain type of Apple Cider drink.

Trivia[]

  • Valentine is the only character who has three musical themes of her own in a single release.
  • In the BlazBlue series, the female lead, Noel Vermillion, is pursed by Litchi Faye-Ling, who forces her to don bizarre outfits upon catching up to her. The last outfit she forces her into is Valentine's.
  • In the game, if Valentine is left idle, she and Lucifero will chat.
  • Inexplicable though it may be, the label on her clothing and armor in her various forms is "NonSugar", which reflects on the fact that she likes Sweets, but isn't very Sweet herself. It seems her outfit was created from raw Backyard data (possibly to reflect on this personality she has). Likewise, her Vizuel Servants are said to be 'formed from her evil intent'.
  • If it weren't for Izuna's quick thinking (and Backyard hacking skills) in teaching Sol and Sin how to use the "Soul Sinker" method of Magic use, they would never have stood a chance against Valentine's forces, and be completely paralyzed, unable to fight.
  • Though Valentine frequently uses and abuses her Servants (even outright killing them psychically if they fail her), Lucifero in particular has romantic feelings for her, despite her cold responses to him (some would argue her personality and taste in clothing is very similar to Rachel Alucard's of BlazBlue, though much less refined and more childish).
  • At one point she states that she "Likes" the Half-Gear Sin, to which he becomes confused (and distracted by her appearance)... Though her statement has more to do with her objectives of finding a "Key", she does not outright destroy Sin upon his capture. Instead, she merely extracts the "Key" from his body, and "partially Sublimates" him, reprogramming him into something like the Darkside personas (Dark Palette Infinite Tension Characters) found in Guilty Gear's Survival Mode found in older games. Thus, for a short stint "Kuro Sin" (Darkside Sin) / Evil Sin is born! But what does this say about Valentine's feelings for Sin in the first place? She spared him, even though she Sublimated (destroyed) all the other Gears she came across. As to why? Even that is a mystery.
  • Valentine appears to have powers similar to a Command Type Gear, including mass brainwashing enchantments of others (such as Izuna's Tribe and Dr. Paradigm's Gear friends), Izuna states that the last time his friends were mind-controlled was when Justice was still alive during the Crusades!
  • "That Man" (The Gearmaker) refers to Valentine as an "Illegitimate Child of a Merciless Apocalypse" "[Jihi naku Keiji] no Otoshiko" (「慈悲なき啓示」の落とし子), the current reason as to why she is 'illegitimate' or what he means exactly, remains unknown, only that there is more than one Valentine, and that they are all threats to Humanity and Gears alike.
  • At first, Valentine has no personality or consciousness (self-awareness) to speak of, but as she interacts with people around her, she becomes more and more angry and aggressive (perhaps 'primal'?). Izuna states that all beings born within the Backyard start off as a blank slate, learning how to identify themselves by name at first, then identifying things around them as "separate", and going on from there. Needless to say, things get dangerous when Valentine does get "dischorded" (her way of saying she is very frustrated).
  • Sol notes that he has a "headache" in Valentine's presence, though it's currently unclear if she is anything like a Gear (since she has a normal "human" blood type). He is also shocked to find her appearance to be similar to his former colleague and romantic interest, Aria whom he once worked with on the "Gear Project" nearly 170 years ago! Even more puzzling is that she later transforms in to an appearance like that of Justice from the first Guilty Gear, complete with a dark version of Gamma Ray, a pair of arms that can transform in to massive Chainsaw blades (similar to Michael Sword), and seems to retain some of Aria's memories of Frederick (addressing him directly). "That Man" also later states to Sol that, even though this Valentine looks like Aria, that "(they) [meaning both himself and Frederick] already killed Aria". Much of the reason behind her existence and appearance remains unknown... All that is known is that when she achieves her final form of a massive warship appearance (with impaled arms for gun turrets), Sol's headache finally goes away.
  • Despite Valentine looking very similar to Aria... her "sister" Ramlethal Valentine looks and behaves nothing like her!
  • As a side note, Valentine's additional forms were never given concept drafts in development, they were rendered entirely in 3D. They are given the names "Robo-Valentine" and "Final Valentine" from the developers.
  • In BlazBlue, Noel Vermillion is put in a situation where she is forced to wear Valentine's outfit as a cosplay. Ironically Noel later becomes "emotionless" (in her Mu-12 form) much like Valentine!
