Arc System Works Co., Ltd. (株式会社アークシステムワークス Kabushiki gaisha Āku Shisutemu Wākusu?) is a video game developer and publisher based in Yokohama, Japan.

They were the original developers of the Master System port of Double Dragon in 1988, and in 2017 they developed and published Double Dragon IV for current generation gaming systems.

As of June 2015, Arc System Works owns the intellectual properties of Technōs Japan, including Double Dragon and Kunio-kun.

History[]

Arc System Works was founded in January 1988 as Arc Co., Ltd and established as a company in May of the same year. It consisted at the time of only seven or eight developers, most of whom had previously worked at Sega including founder Minoru Kidooka. The company spent its early years as a contract developer for Sega, Sammy and Banpresto. It was renamed Arc System Works in 1991 and published its first title in 1995.

On June 11, 2015, Arc System Works acquired all intellectual properties of Technōs Japan, such as Double Dragon and Kunio-kun, from Million Co., Ltd. Even prior to its acquisition of Million's library, Arc System Works had been the publisher of Technōs' video games for the Virtual Console in Japan. Following the transaction, the company took the publishing duties from Aksys Games for Virtual Console releases in North America, though some Technōs games were already published by Arc System Works there as well.
