Peter Pan & Wendy

Peter Pan & Wendy is an American live-action film. It was directed by David Lowery, with a script written by Lowery and Toby Hallbrooks. It is a remake of the 1953 Disney animated feature film Peter Pan, which was based on the play and novel, Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up and/or Peter and Wendy by J.M. Barrie.

Synopsis[]

Wendy Darling, a young girl afraid to leave her childhood home behind, meets Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up. Alongside her brothers and a tiny fairy, Tinker Bell, she travels with Peter to the magical world of Neverland. There, Wendy encounters an evil pirate captain, Captain Hook, and embarks on a thrilling and dangerous adventure that will change her life forever.

Plot[]

The night before Wendy Darling is sent to boarding school, she play duels with her younger brothers John and Michael Darling as if they're Peter Pan and his ally fighting against Captain Hook, only to accidentally break their vanity mirror. When George Darling finds out she did it, he scolds her and tells her that she needs to grow up while taking Nana Darling outside. Later at bedtime, Mary Darling tries to convince Wendy that it's okay to grow up when Wendy confesses her frustrations and that she wants "Things to stay the way they were", ending with Mary singing "All Grown Up" to her and her brothers to sleep. Later, Tinker Bell enters and attempts to whisk Wendy away to Neverland, only to be caught by John and Michael. Peter then shows up, with his intent being to take Wendy and her brothers to Neverland so they, mostly Wendy, wouldn't have to grow up, as well as reclaim his shadow which ran away from him. After Wendy helps sew his shadow back on, where she gives Peter her thimble, dubbing it "Her kiss" to him, Peter encourages the Darling children to come with him as they use Tink's pixie dust to fly away, much to their excitement for fun and adventure, despite John feeling hesitant.

Upon arriving in Neverland, Peter, Wendy, John, Michael, and Tink have some fun flying around, as well as briefly encounter some mermaids, when Captain Hook and his pirates spot the children from their pirate ship and proceed to blast at them with their cannon, separating the group when Peter attempts to take his friends to safety and attack Hook. Wendy is then found by Princess Tiger Lily and the Lost Boys (some of whom are actually girls, making them the Lost Children) and together, they discover that John and Michael have been taken by the pirates. Hook, knowing that Peter will come for them upon learning that Peter brought John and Michael to Neverland, takes the two boys to Skull Rock as bait, as well as drown them, with Wendy, Tiger Lily, and the Lost Children following them to rescue John and Michael. En route through a shortcut to Skull Rock, Wendy learns from the Lost Children some tidbits of how Hook "Grew up wrong" and how he lost his hand and clock to a Crocodile. Upon arrival, Wendy and the others prepare to go to John and Michael's rescue when Peter reveals himself with Tink, having snuck in disguised as a pirate, and he and Hook do battle while Wendy and Tiger Lily, with Tink's help, free John and Michael. Just when Hook finishes Peter off, Wendy saves the latter by calling out to Hook to stop, resulting her to introduce herself and where she came from, even pointing out that "Gentlemen do not harm children". But just when Hook threatens Wendy to say her last goodbye to Peter while he finishes him off, the Crocodile appears and attacks Hook and his pirates, who then escaped while Peter and his friends escape to another part of Neverland.

Afterwards, Peter exclaims that their adventure they just had was fun, only for Wendy to angrily slap him across the face for being reckless. As they argued over Peter's recklessness, Wendy asks Peter if he will be able to beat Hook on his own without help, only for Peter to tell her that he doesn't need help and that nothing ever changes in Neverland. Wendy then learns a hint from Nibs and Curly respectively that some things do change in Neverland and that "Hook wasn't always Hook". Upon arriving at the Lost Children's hideout, Wendy has a heart-to-heart with Tiger Lily about their homes, ending with Tiger Lily, before leaving for her Indian encampment home, leaving her with her words of wisdom about following one's path. Once settled in the hideout, Wendy attempts to get Peter to open up about his past with Hook via a bedtime story for the children, but Peter, who is trying to keep his story simple, just bluffs it off that "[Hook's] a pirate, and [he's] Peter Pan." Then when Wendy tries to convince Peter to talk about his and Hook's parents, she and the children soon talk about mothers and growing up, resulting Peter to angrily retreat to his room. Wendy then sings a lullaby to her brothers and the Lost Children, which is heard by Hook and the pirates. Wendy, with Tink, eventually visits Peter in his room. Then Peter gives Wendy an acorn necklace he dubs "His kiss" for her, and after Peter and Wendy came to terms that they were fighting lately like he and Hook are, Peter, after Wendy asks if Hook was his friend, reveals that Hook, whose real name is James, was his best friend and the "Very first Lost Boy" who came to Neverland with him, but something changed James when "Neverland wasn't good enough for him" that caused him to leave. Then when James came back, he was older and had become a pirate, as well as "Cruel" and "Evil". After Wendy guessed that Hook just probably grew up, Peter snaps and then begs her that growing up would end their fun and adventures, and that she mustn't leave like Hook did or else she could become something else, and that she could just be herself like Peter himself is being himself, but Wendy points out that she originally thought she'd be happy to stay in Neverland, but what changed her mind is that she didn't expect the place to be too real. Peter tries to convince her again that Neverland is a "Better real", but Wendy decides she and her brothers are better off home, resulting Peter to turn his back on her and tell her good night. Wendy then leaves his room, accepting her "Kiss", only to find Hook and the pirates have arrived at the hideout and captured the children and then her. Hook then manages to slash Peter across the chest, seemingly killing him. The pirates then kidnap all the children, and Mr. Smee captures Tink before she could save Peter.

On the ship, Hook confronts Wendy about her lullaby, to which she reveals that it was a lullaby her mother would sing to her. Wendy then confronts Hook about how he and Peter used to be friends, leading Hook to leave him and then become what he became upon his return. Hook then tells Wendy that Peter left out that he had exiled him when he missed his mother. Upon leaving Neverland, he was found by Smee and the pirates and eventually became their leader before returning to get revenge on Peter. Wendy then realized that Hook's obsession to get revenge is what led to him to grow up wrong because of the pirates, resulting Hook to threaten to drown the children, but Wendy offers that they join his crew instead and that she herself walk the plank. Back at the hideout, Peter's shadow escapes and alerts Tiger Lily who comes and nurses Peter back to health, however, he has lost his ability to fly, only for Tiger Lily to convince Peter to let her help, resulting Peter to realize the errors of his reckless ways from his near-death experience and agree. As Wendy is sent to walk the plank, she once again thinks of happy thoughts, this time of what her future might be like when she grows up and succeeds in flying, thanks to Tink saving her after she escapes Smee and causes the ship to fly. Peter and Tiger Lily arrive and a fight on the ship breaks out.

Wendy manages to take control of the ship and overturns it, causing all the pirates to fall off. After Wendy saves Peter from falling and helps him regain his ability to fly, Peter and Hook then have one more exchange where the former apologizes for how he treated him in the past, hoping to make amends. While Hook somewhat accepts it, he is too far removed from being happy, refusing to apologize for leaving Peter. Then just when Hook attempts to strike Peter, Wendy saves Peter and two of the Lost Children fires the cannon at Hook. Peter tries to save his old friend, telling him to think happy thoughts, but Hook admits he doesn't have any and falls into the ocean, losing his hook in the process. Afterwards, Peter grieves for the loss of his friend, only to be comforted by his friends. After bidding Tiger Lily goodbye, the children then take the ship back to London where George and Mary awake to find Wendy awake. Wendy then reconciles with her parents and admits that she is ready to grow up. Mary and George are then shocked and then surprised and accepting to see Wendy, John, and Michael having returned with the Lost Children for them to be adopted. Up on the roof, Peter tells Wendy that he used to live in their house and that he ran away when his mother told him to grow up. Wendy comforts Peter and suggests that he can stay with them, but Peter is not yet ready and opts to return to Neverland, to which Wendy relents and agreed, having understood that they have different paths and, for her case, just because she's growing up, it doesn't mean it could end her adventures in the future. Wendy also says goodbye to Tink, whom she is finally able to hear, as everyone looks on as Peter and Tink leave in their flying ship, with Wendy, John, and Michael bidding the two goodbye while George, Mary, Nana, and the Lost Children see the two off.

Back in Neverland, Hook and Smee are revealed to be alive. As they hang onto floating objects in the ocean, they see Peter and Tink return with the ship. As Peter smiles down at him and Smee, Hook gives a smile in return, indicating that he either forgives Peter or he is ecstatic to fight him again, to which Peter reciprocates on.

Development[]

In January 2020, Margot Robbie was in talks to play Tinker Bell,^[1] and the film was announced to be released on Disney+.

In February 2020, Joaquin Phoenix had been offered to play the role of Captain Hook.^[2]

In March 2020, it was announced that newcomer child actor Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson (Daughter of actress/model Milla Jovovich and director Paul W.S. Anderson) are both casted as Peter Pan and Wendy Darling respectively,^[3] and that the film will be released theatrically instead of on Disney+.

Filming for the film was to commence on April 17, 2020 in both London, England and Canada, but was temporally postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.^[4]

In July 2020, it was announced that Jude Law will play Captain Hook as Phoenix ended up turning the role down.^[5] Adam Driver and Will Smith also declined to play Captain Hook.

In September 2020, it was announced that Yara Shahidi will play Tinker Bell instead of Robbie.^[6]

In October 2020, it was announced that newcomer actress Alyssa Wapanatâhk was cast as Tiger Lily.^[7]

In December 2020, it was announced that the film will be released on Disney+ as originally planned instead of theatrically.

In January 2021, it was announced that Jim Gaffigan was cast as Mr. Smee,^[8] and that some of the cast recently arrived in Vancouver the same week for a quick costume test.

Filming started in Canada and London on March 8, 2021 and wrapped up on June 30, 2021.

Production on the film officially started on March 16, 2021, and it was also announced that Molly Parker and Alan Tudyk, along with newcomer child actors, Joshua Pickering and Jacobi Jupe, have joined the cast as Mary, George, John, and Michael Darling respectively.^[9]

In May 2021, the Lost Boys' roles were announced and new characters were added in the form of newcomer child actors Noah Matthew Matofsky (Slightly), Sebastian Billingsley (Nibs), Kelsey and Skyler Yates (Twins; As girls instead of boys like in the original play, novel, and other adaptation versions), Florence Bensburg (Curly; As a girl, instead of a boy like in the original play, novel, and other adaptation versions, instead of Cubby, a boy character, like in the original Disney version), Caelan Edie (Tootles), Diana Tsoy (Birdie; A new Lost Girl character), and Felix de Sousa (Bellweather; A new Lost Boy character).^[10]

In July 2021, it was announced that additional filming will take place in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada on August 2021, also serving the locations as the film’s backdrops.^[11]

Filming officially wrapped on August 14, 2021.^[12]

On January 27, 2022, it was then announced that reshoots will take place from February 2 to 8.^[13]

It was also recently announced that both Framestore and DNEG (Double Negative) will work on the film’s visual effects.

On September 9, 2022, it has been officially confirmed at the D23 Expo that the film will be released in 2023, in order to coincide with the original film's 70th anniversary. It was later verified that the film would be released on Disney+ in the spring of 2023.

On December 19, 2022, a 30-second Disney+ preview trailer also showed some tidbit preview clips of the film, with the first clip being a shot of Wendy flying with Michael and John flying behind her, the next clip of John and Michael first meeting Peter alongside Wendy in the Darling nursery, and the last clip briefly showing Wendy dueling with one of Hook's pirates on the Jolly Roger.^[14]

The first official trailer was released on February 28, 2023 and its release date was revealed to be April 28, 2023. The second official trailer was released on April 10, 2023.

Reception[]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 64% of 149 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.2/10. The website's consensus reads: "Peter Pan & Wendy's obligatory fidelity to the animated classic keeps it from achieving Neverland nirvana, but David Lowery's pensive direction gives this rendition some of its own magic."^[15] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 61 out of 100, based on 33 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".^[16]

Differences from the 1953 film[]

• While the original Disney film, as well as the original play and novel and most other adaptations, was simply titled "Peter Pan", the remake is titled "Peter Pan and Wendy", in homage to one of the alternate titles of the original play and novel, “Peter and Wendy.”
• When Michael and John play as Peter Pan and Captain Hook sword fighting, John doesn't hold a clothes hanger or anything as a hook, unlike in the original Disney film. Wendy also joins the fight and accidentally breaks a mirror.
• John and Michael woke up before Wendy when Tinker Bell and Peter Pan entered the Darling children's bedroom.
• In the remake, when Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Wendy, John, and Michael fly through London, an instrumental snippet of the song "You Can Fly" is heard.
• The Lost Boys not only include boys, but girls, too.
  • Slightly is now a child with Down Syndrome, Nibs is biracial, the twins, now named Tudy and Rudy, are African-American girls, Cubby is renamed Curly, like in the original play and novel and most other adaptations, and is a girl instead of a boy, and Tootles is an African-American.
  • There are also two new characters among the Lost Children; Birdie, a Chinese-American girl, and Bellweather, a Latino boy.
• While Tinker Bell was a white Caucasian in the original play, novel, and Disney film and many other adaptations, she is now black in the remake.
• In the original film, Tinker Bell wore green flat shoes with white puffballs on the tips. But in this remake, she is barefooted.
• While Captain Hook and George Darling were both performed by the same actor in the original Disney film, as well as the original play and many other adaptations, both characters are now portrayed by different actors in the remake. The first time this tradition break happened was in NBC’s broadcast of “Peter Pan Live!” in 2014, where Christopher Walken played Captain Hook and Christian Borle played both Mr. Smee and George Darling instead.
• In the remake, the Mermaids from Mermaid Lagoon are only shown swimming in the ocean when everyone arrives at Neverland.
  • Peter doesn't take Wendy to meet them either.
• The song "Following the Leader" from the original film is not in the remake, nor do John and Michael lead the Lost Boys in a march.
• Tiger Lily has a larger role in the remake than she did in the original Disney film.
  • She now has a horse sidekick.
  • She is described in the remake as "Both a fierce warrior and a serene and benevolent leader who protects Neverland and the Lost Boys and Girls from the dastardly Captain Hook."
  • She is now bilingual, speaking in both English and her native language.
  • She wasn't captured and held hostage by Captain Hook at Skull Rock.
    • Instead, it was John and Michael who were captured and held hostage.
• In the original Disney film and some adaptation versions, Captain Hook's namesake prosthetic hook is on his left hand, but in this remake, it's on his right hand, like in the original play, novel, and most other adaptations.
• Unlike the original Disney film, this remake does not have smoking due to a ban enacted in 2007 prohibiting all forms of smoking and tobacco use from being featured in all Disney films.
• In the original Disney film, Captain Hook wears mostly a red coat, but in this remake, he wears a blue coat in the first half of this film, and in the trailers and official poster of the film, as well as the second half of this film, he is wearing a red coat. And his hair is black in the original and most other adaptations while in this film, his hair is grayish brown.
• In the original Disney film, Wendy never wields a sword nor does she fight. But in this remake, she does as she is shown dueling Captain Hook in the official teaser poster and in a brief clip of her fighting one of the pirates.
  • Wendy also wielded a sword and fought in the 2003 live-action film adaptation of Peter Pan.
• In the original film, Peter Pan wields a dagger. But in the remake, he wields a sword.
• Wendy's backstory and the history of Peter Pan and Captain Hook's rivalry is further explored in the remake.
• According to director David Lowery, the remake removed problematic elements that were present in the original film such as the insensitive stereotypical depiction of Never Land's native Indian Tribe (which got the original film a warning disclaimer on Disney+).
• In the original film, Wendy wears a blue nightgown and has a hair ribbon. But in the remake, she wears a blue robe over her white sleepwear (or undergarments) and she doesn't have a hair ribbon.
• In the original film and some adaptations, as well as the remake, the children characters wear shoes and/or footie socks for the majority of the adventures, while in other adaptations, including the original play and 2003 live-action film adaptations, the children characters were mostly barefoot.
• In the original film and many other adaptations, the Lost Boys mistake Wendy flying towards them as a "Wendy Bird" and try to shoot her down. This does not happen in the remake.
• In the original film, Hook delivers a bomb Peter in Hangman's Tree, making him think it's a gift from Wendy. This does not happen in the remake.
• In the original film, the Lost Boys stay in Neverland, while in this remake, as well as other adaptations, they get adopted by the Darling family.
• Wendy is a deuteragonist in the original film, while in this remake, she has been elevated to a protagonist alongside Peter Pan.
• Like Wendy, her brothers John and Michael wear very different nightwear in the remake than in the original.
• In the original film, Peter Pan catches Tinker Bell with his hat after she tugs on Wendy's hair to prevent her from kissing him. But in the remake, John catches her with his hands after she blows Pixie dust on a sleeping Wendy causing her to float.
• In the original film, Wendy never interacts with Tiger Lily. But in the remake, they actually do.
  • Tiger Lily even gives Wendy some words of wisdom.
• In the original film, Hook shoots a pirate due to being annoyed with his singing. But in the remake, Hook shoots a pirate due to him not wanting to hear Peter Pan's name.
• Tick-Tock the Crocodile is green in the original film. But in the remake, he is brown.
  • He also only appears in the Skull Rock scene in the remake, but in the original film, he appears in multiple scenes.
• In the remake, Peter and Hook duel in Hook's quarters which never happens in the original film.
• In the original film, Tinker Bell doesn't accompany Peter Pan to Skull Rock due to being banished forever by him for ordering the Lost Boys to shoot Wendy down after claiming her to be a "Wendy Bird". But in the remake, she does help him fight Captain Hook at Skull Rock.
• Captain Hook has heterochromia in this film.
• Wendy, John, and Michael steer the Jolly Roger in this film.
  • Peter does not wear Hook's hat or coat when flying the pirate ship.
• None of the prominent female characters (Wendy, Tinker Bell, Tiger Lily) fight over Peter's affections.
  • In fact, in this film, Tiger Lily treats Peter like her younger brother.
• Tinker Bell and Wendy have a friendlier relationship in this film and Tinker Bell does not show jealousy and hatred towards Wendy.
• In the original film, Michael and John never visited Skull Rock due to being captured at the Indian camp site, but in this remake, they do visit Skull Rock and aren't captured by any Indians.
• Peter Pan was seen returning to Never Land at the end of this film.
• In the original film, Tiger Lily was no longer seen near the end, while in this film, she takes part in the final battle alongside Peter, Tinker Bell, the Darling children, and the Lost children.
• Wendy slaps Peter in the face in this film. She never did this in the original film.
• Peter Pan and Captain Hook remain enemies in the original film, while in the remake, they become civil after Peter apologizes to Hook for what happened between them.
• In the original movie, Peter Pan, Wendy, Michael, and John all arrive to Neverland and land on a cloud, but in this remake, they don't land on any clouds when they show up. They just land directly on Neverland arriving.
• In the original movie, Tinker Bell was unable to talk, even though Peter Pan could understand her, but in this remake, she does talk at the end, thanking Wendy for hearing her.

Trivia[]

• Ever Anderson and Jude Law also had roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anderson played young Black Widow in Black Widow and Law played Yon-Rogg in Captain Marvel.
• The film was released in 2023, which coincided with the original film's 70th anniversary.
• This is the 14th Disney film to feature Alan Tudyk, after Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, The Good Dinosaur, Zootopia, Moana, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Aladdin, Raya and the Last Dragon, Encanto, Disenchanted, and Strange World.
• This is the fourth live-action remake to have an alternate title different from the original's title, after Maleficent for Sleeping Beauty, Christopher Robin for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and Cruella for One Hundred and One Dalmatians.
• This is the third live-action remake to be released exclusively on Disney+, after Lady and the Tramp and Pinocchio.
• This is the first ever Disney live-action remake to use the new 2022 on-screen logo.

• The film's second official trailer was released on April 10, 2023, which is coincidentally National Siblings Day.
• This is the first Disney film to feature an actor with a disability, in this case, Down Syndrome, in the form of Noah Matthews Matofsky as Slightly.

• Wendy offering to sacrifice herself in order to save her brothers and the Lost Children is similar to what Belle does to save her father from being held prisoner by Beast in Beauty and the Beast.
  • On another note, both of these scenes occur in a prison-like setting.
