I'm definitely seeing an uptick in recruiting roles and I'm hoping the trend continues before we hit the holidays. If you're searching, here's the biggest lesson I can impart: 👉 SEARCH + APPLY RIGHT AWAY - daily or more frequently, if you can. 👈 The sooner you send in your application, the more likely you'll get a call back. These roles are taken down after receiving a certain # of applications, and I've seen it happen literally within hours.

🙋‍♂️ Talent Acquisition Teams / Directors / Decision Makers What do you hate most about being approached by agency recruiters? I see a lot of posts on LinkedIn, with people frustrated about the following methods: ❌ Being pitch-slapped on LinkedIn, after an inconspicuous connection request ❌ Relentless follow-ups about a service/offer that has no relevance to you ❌ Being cold-called, pitching at 100mph and not taking no for an answer ❌ Receiving speculative CVs, that don't meet your company's requirements ❌ Vague emails, about jumping on a call next week to "Catch-Up" I'm sure plenty of agency recruiters trying to win new business, will have used these tactics and had some positive responses. (Including myself) It seems the antidote is a mixture of the following: ✔️ Recognising Intent / Hiring needs ✔️ Personalized outreach, specific to the company/person ✔️ Building trust and strong relationships with individuals in the industry ✔️ Being consultative, and timely with the service ✔️ AND trying not to sound like a used car salesperson. This is all well and good..... but it can feel impossible for a lot of recruiters who have weekly/monthly KPIs and targets to achieve. Back in the Red Storm days, I spent several years as the manager of the Game Design department. In that capacity I did a lot of hiring, and I did my best to develop my team professionally. One of those folks enjoyed working at RSE, but his dream was always to work for the studio that made his favorite game. But, despite all his efforts, he was repeatedly turned down when he applied. I didn't want to lose this designer, but a dream's a dream. So I asked him to show me his latest application before he sent it in. He handed over the application and his answers, and I read. It took half a minute to figure out the issue. I asked him, "What are they asking for in question 1?" He told me. I then asked "What is your response to question 1?" Again, he told me. And finally I asked "Does your response actually answer the question in any way, shape, or form?" He stared at me for a minute, then he looked at his answers, then he looked at me again and said "No." Because instead of answering the question, he had run off detailing something he thought was cool and was enthusiastic about, which, as anyone who has done interviewing will tell you, is a big red flag. Fortunately, after a little explaining, the designer was receptive to the idea of rewriting everything to actually answer the questions at hand. He got hired at dream studio very shortly thereafter, and has had a long and fruitful career in the industry. The lesson here is simple: Answer the question you're given. That especially holds for narrative deliverables. A proper narrative deliverable should fulfill the requested purpose - no more, no less. It should answer the question, not raise new ones, not ignore the original one to tackle other concerns, not bury the original concept under a mountain of additional material. It is sometimes hard for narrative folks to rein themselves in when asked to pitch stories or characters or whatever. Good narrative types have a gift for holding the whole kit and kaboodle in their heads. They see the gestalt - where it starts, where it goes, and what's potentially going to be needed down the line that no one else is thinking about. But that can lead to producing additional work that seems logical, but that no one asked for and no one wanted yet. Often that work strays outside the lines of what is useful. This can have deeply negative consequences. Surprise presentations of unrequested work can blindside requestors and put them on the defensive. It can be seen as staking out territory that is deliberately undefined at this point, an attempt to claim others' creative space. And if it's not up to snuff, it can have long-lasting repercussions for both individuals and teams. So, answer the question. If you think more needs to be said, keep the "more" in your back pocket in case it gets requested. Don't jump the gun, don't try to steal a march, even if you think it's good or necessary. It isn't, and you're not doing yourself or your team any favors by doing so.

Hello, my dearest network! I hope fate treats you well during these stormy days😉 While the industry rattled by shake-ups - GTA V surpassed the 200 million mark, while Red Dead Redemption II made it past 64 million copies sold. As we think about their successes, what really made these games reach such incredible heights? While GTA Online undeniably plays a significant role in revenue streams, it's crucial to recognize that its foundation rests on the bedrock of perfectly well-crafted single-player experiences. GTA V hooked players with its massive open world and gripping story. Similarly, Red Dead Redemption II drew in audiences worldwide with its immersive narrative and detailed world. So, what's the secret sauce behind their success? It's the unwavering commitment to quality, attention to detail, and immersive gameplay experiences. These games weren't just products, they were immersive worlds waiting to be explored, crafted with care and precision. Where I'm heading with this is that it seems like the current industry has shifted towards prioritizing "making product first" over "game first", despite the success story of GTA proving that the opposite approach is actually what works. Of course, I'm not saying this applies to everyone. But I bet some examples have come to your mind😉 Well, here I go kvetching again 😬 😂

5 hacks for junior job hunters 👀 We have all been there: You are on the lookout for your first job and it seems like nobody is hiring! Junior position is looking for 2+ years of experience, internships are non-existent - what do you do?! Here’s a fact to lighten the load right away - everyone with a job has been in the same place you are right now - and survived! 🫠 So here is what you do: 1. Figure out what your passion is What I often see is people applying for anything that is open and spreading themselves too thin. What seems like a really good fit for you? Is it QA? Finance? HR? There are a bunch of tests online that can help you with figuring this out - however, steps 3 and 4 can also help you focus and find your true passion 2. Make it obvious! Focus on the information in your CV to point to what you really want to do. Put in projects, classes, and skills that are relevant and try to take out things that seem like fillers - if the blankness of the page scares you, take into account that CVs are usually screened in a small amount of time and you want to make sure that whoever is looking at it has a clear idea of what you did so far and how it matches to what they need. 3. Projects, projects, projects This step works in three ways: 👉 Helps you learn and put your toes into what you really want to do. 👉 On the way you get to figure out if your passion lies in that field 👉 It gives you great content for your CV and something to talk about in your interviews! 4. Network This one is very important! Reach out to people whose careers you admire and ask if they can spare some time to give you tips. Use this call to tell them what projects you are already working on and ask for feedback. 5. Grit! It won't happen overnight, so don't give up! Continue with steps 3 and 4 and once it happens, it will be a real well-deserved victory. You got this! :)

I never thought I would be writing this but... like everyone else at Sumo, I might be at risk of being #LaidOff. We don't know much yet, and there's a chance I won't be affected, but what kind of doomsday prepper would I be if I didn't prepare. Especially when the industry has considerably slowed down. Not that the timing could ever be great for something like this, but it's particularly tricky as there are VERY FEW recruitment jobs in #GameDev. Games Jobs Workbook v14.1 Is Here (Please Help Repost) https://lnkd.in/d6x5NHMZ - Resource 8 We now have: - 2,760 games employers (+632) - 982 games employers who are actively hiring (+101) - 13,359 games jobs (+368) In terms of secondary statistics (when I say "ever," I mean since I started tracking data in November 2022): - Jobs are the least concentrated by employer ever. The top 10 employers have 4,993 jobs, or 37%. The top 27 employers have 6,706 jobs, or 50%. - Jobs are the least concentrated by function ever, although still fairly concentrated. The top three functions have 61% of all jobs, and the top four have 70%. Engineering, Programming, Tech Design, Tech Writing = 29% Art, Tech Art, Animation, Cinematics & Video = 21% Game Design = 11% Production, Project Management, Business + Communication Ops, Performance = 9% - The average number of jobs per employer is 14. - The median number of jobs per employer is 4. - Of the 982 games employers currently hiring: 264 are fully remote (27%) 118 have some remote jobs (12%), so 40% of games employers have some remote jobs. 600 are all hybrid or onsite (61%). - Of the 982 games employers currently hiring: 1,322 jobs are fully remote (10%). 2,686 jobs are at employers who have some remote jobs (20%), so 30% of jobs are at games employers who have some remote jobs. 9,351 jobs are at employers who are all hybrid or onsite (70%). - You can expect 939 additional games companies in v14.2. I am breaking this large update into v14.1 and v14.2 after all, just because I need a bit more time for testing on the second installment. How to make a decision on, and get hired by, the #RIGHT company or studio. This might not be what you're expecting. If you're a seasoned pro at interviewing, and you're entirely relaxed, likely non of this will surprise you. But for those still finding your feet... The Obvious stuff. - We all want to work somewhere we feel at home. - We all crank out better quality work, at a higher rate, whilst in a happier place, when we feel like we've landed somewhere where we can just be ourselves. - We all want to be able to switch off to the external stresses or worries that are sometimes upon us, so we can produce the best work of our lives. It's in the detail... - During your interviews, be who you are, every day. Engage in a way that gives insights on who you are to the people you're meeting. This is bigger than you think. As simple as it sounds, being who you 'really are' will subtly influence the way you are engaged, to a more effortless conversation. Just think about that for a moment... It will subtly influence the person or people you are meeting, to be more like you... Reasons you need to do this: - If the people you meet with reciprocate your energy, and make you feel like the meeting isn't strained, that's a solid positive indicator of their team vibe. Meet more people, and it turns into an indicator of company vibe. - If you feel like you're constantly having to change your style into something that doesn't feel 100% you, see more people, build the picture and seek more touchpoints before you make hasty decisions about it. Sure, we all adapt our styles here and there but you'll get a sense of the culture through how people communicate with you and that's important. - Being 'you' from the start will not spook them out on day 1, if you've maintained another personality throughout the interview process. It's not a bad idea to meet your future boss again once the deal has been done, in a more casual 'non interview' setting. You can both talk candidly, and it helps set tone before starting. It's especially a great idea if there are a couple of months waiting before starting. Hopefully the lucky company for having landed you, will make sure there are touch points throughout the pre-boarding phase to keep you engaged.
