The Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ) charity marathon has officially concluded, raising a whopping $2,546,290 for Doctors Without Borders! This incredible sum pushes the total amount raised by Games Done Quick events over the $50 million mark, a monumental achievement for the speedrunning community. Over its 14-year history, Games Done Quick has raised money for a variety of worthy charities, including AbleGamers, Organization for Autism Research, Malala Fund, National Women's Law Center, and Prevent Cancer Foundation. This commitment to giving back makes Games Done Quick a true champion for good, both inside and outside the gaming world. Games Done Quick also announced their upcoming schedule: ⭐ Flame Fatales: August 18th - 25th ⭐ Awesome Games Done Quick: January 5th - 12th (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) ⭐ Summer Games Done Quick 2025: July 6th - 13th Did you watch it? According to estimates by IDC, Global AR/VR Device Shipments Plummeted by 67.4% YoY in Q1 2024 According to IDC, around 300,000 AR & VR devices were shipped in Q1’24. (It’s important to note that these figures refer to shipments, meaning that these devices still need to be sold by the stores) 🤑 The average price of AR/VR devices has risen to over $1,000, driven by the release of the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3. However, IDC analysts believe that prices for devices will decrease in the future. 🥇 Meta remained the segment leader (with 37.2% of the market). 🥈 Apple is in second place (with 17% of the market). 🥉 Bytedance is third (11.9%). 📊 DPVR, and HTC are slowly increasing their market shares, while Sony, on the contrary, is actively losing ground. 📈 IDC believes that device shipments will return to growth this year, with a volume increase of 7.5% in 2024 compared to 2023. Amazing news from Germany: after 25 years at Piranha Bytes, the creative force behind Gothic, Risen, and Elex, Björn Pankratz and Jennifer Pankratz have announced the formation of Pithead Studio. This decision comes after lengthy discussions and a desire to pursue a fresh start. The news follows a period of turbulence for Piranha Bytes. The studio, a German development powerhouse since 1997, was acquired by THQ Nordic in 2019. Recent financial struggles within the parent company, Embracer, led to studio closures and project cancellations. Despite a government grant in May 2023, Piranha Bytes' future remains unclear. Undeterred, the Pankratz duo is forging their own path. Pithead Studio, named after the exit shaft of a coal mine, symbolizes a return to their roots (the Ruhrpott region) and a fresh start. Pithead Studio plans to focus on creating "unique and immersive indie games." Fans can expect dark action adventures rich with story, horror, and RPG elements. Initially, the studio will collaborate with external partners, with publisher discussions still ongoing. With the official announcement and social media channels launching today, Pithead Studio is ready to take center stage. This is exciting news for RPG fans, as the Pankratz's experience promises a thrilling new journey into immersive worlds. Wishing Björn and Jennifer all the best for their new studio! Capcom has acquired a significant stake (two-thirds) in Taiwanese animation studio Minimum Studios for a reported $27,265 USD. This move strengthens Capcom's in-house development capabilities, aligning with their goal of reaching 100 million units in annual sales. Founded in 2018, Minimum specializes in animation for video games, including characters, creatures, and environments. Notably, they've collaborated with Capcom since their inception, contributing facial and body animation to projects like Resident Evil 4 Remake, Resident Evil Village, and Dragon's Dogma II. This acquisition follows Capcom's 2023 purchase of Swordcanes, an animation and art studio that worked on Street Fighter 6 and Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fi Rush. Interesting insight from Video Game Insights: The Rise of Cooperative Games on Steam in 2024 📈 The number of cooperative games released surged in 2020 (from 388 in 2019 to 647). It seems developers recognized the importance of socialization during the pandemic. Since then, the number of cooperative games released each year has only increased. In 2023, 799 such projects were released. 📊 In 2023, cooperative games accounted for 6% of the total number of games released on Steam. At the same time, they made up 36% of all units sold. 📊 In 2024, the situation looks even more disproportionate. Cooperative games make up 5% of all released games; they account for 46% of all copies sold. Of course, this is significantly influenced by titles like Helldivers II, Palworld, and Content Warning. Nevertheless, the share of sales for cooperative games has not dropped below 33% over the past five years. 👨👩👧👦 The consumption pattern has a major influence here. Cooperative games are often played with friends, hence the high virality factor. According to VGI, the largest cooperative games in 2024 are: 🥇 Palworld (19 million copies; peak CCU - 2.1M) 🥈 Helldivers II (11 million units; peak CCU - 459k) 🥉 Content Warning (2.5 million copies; peak CCU - 204k) 🎖 Gray Zone Warfare (1.4 million copies; peak CCU - 73k) 💴 In 2024, more than 40 million copies of co-op games were sold. Palworld accounts for 47% of this volume; Helldivers II for 28%. The other projects make up 16%. 💴 Cooperative games on Steam outperform single-player games in terms of sales. A typical cooperative game sells around 40,000 copies compared to 5,000 for a single-player game. 🤔 VGI notes that 106 cooperative games on Steam have sold more than 5 million copies. 🏆 Key features of cooperative games: they are viral; generate memes and absurd situations; are fun to stream; and most of them have high replayability.
