Cain (ケイン, Kein) was a young male Bount who was left in Gō Koga's care by Jin Kariya many years ago.[1]

Appearance[]

Cain was a young, slim-built man with icy blue eyes, thin and arching eyebrows, and brown hair cut very short. He wore a simple blue-gray cap on his head, a white buttoned dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up near his elbows, dark gray pants held up by suspenders that merged in a Y-shape at the back, and brown shoes, as well as a blue-green jacket bought for him by Koga in the winter months.[1]

Personality[]

Prior to being assigned to Gō Koga by Jin Kariya, Cain was a very belligerent, surly, and disrespectful man, untrusting of others and believing that Bount should not work together. However, after working extensively alongside Koga to maintain the latter's farm and training his body with the manual labor, Cain became much friendlier toward Koga and admitted that he was living in a horrendous manner before meeting him, though he still retained an aggressive and confrontational streak that he demonstrated when the two of them were confronted by men seeking to take their belongings. Eventually, having taken pride in his status as a Bount, Cain came to admire Koga and wished to become just as strong as he was in both body and spirit, but underneath this lay a persevering overconfidence that led him to disobey Koga's direct order to not summon a Doll on his own and resulted in Cain dying when he tried to give orders to Waineton despite Koga warning that he was not yet strong enough to do so; in death, Cain was frightened and desperately begged Koga to save him.[1]

History[]

Ep83KariyaWithCain

Jin Kariya brings Cain to Gō Koga to be trained and developed into a proper Bount.

Many years ago, a younger Jin Kariya brought Cain to Gō Koga in the hopes that the latter would train him into a strong and respectable Bount. Though initially reluctant due to the Bount historically living apart from each other and not working well together, a sentiment which Cain shared, Koga eventually acquiesced and demonstrated his physical superiority over Cain in order to incentivize the latter to train himself to a higher level of power; in turn, Cain, though angry at Koga for humiliating him, agreed to help with the farmwork to begin his training and proceeded to assist Koga in several forms of manual labor like chopping up logs for firewood, carrying buckets of water, and harvesting crops.[1]

Ep83KogaCainCoat

Koga buys a coat for Cain so he can stay warm.

Some time later, Koga and Cain brought potatoes to a nearby town to sell them, where Koga bought Cain a jacket so he could stay warm while training in the winter, to Cain's delight. With Cain admitting how grateful he is to have met Koga due the latter greatly improving his life and quality of character, the two of them were confronted by three men who saw Koga receiving the money for the potatoes earlier and intended to rob them of their possessions. However, though Cain was ready to fight them in turn, Koga asserted that the men were not worth wasting their time on and proved that he could not be harmed by their attacks prior to pulling Cain away.[1]

Ep83KogaCainBook

Koga decides that it is time for Cain to gain a Doll using the manual summoning method.

That evening, the two were confronted by a mob of villagers led by the three men who called them monsters. In response, Koga summoned his Doll, Dalk, to scare them off, leaving Cain in awe of her power. When Dalk commented on Cain still not having a Doll of his own, Koga assured him that he would gain one in the future due to being a chosen Human, which Cain took to heart. Later, while Cain was training with a wooden dummy, he explained to Koga that he was pushing himself because he wanted to one day match Koga in strength, having taken a liking to their hard-working lifestyle. In response, Koga decided that it was time for Cain to gain a Doll of his own and gave him Kariya's instruction book.[1]

Ep83CainDies

Cain rapidly ages after being rejected by Waineton.

Despite Koga warning him against summoning the Doll on his own and instead planning to summon one for him, Cain secretly performs the ritual that night and summons Waineton. As an alarmed Koga finds him, Cain insists that he has done it and that Waineton will obey him, but Waineton perceives Cain's weakness and kills him with her rejection, causing Cain to rapidly age and turn to ashes. In the aftermath, a sorrowful Koga and Kariya buried what little remained of Cain by the sea under a carefully arranged pile of rocks topped by his cap before deciding to live together, having learned from Cain that living alone was simply too painful for a Bount to bear.[1]

Powers & Abilities[]

Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Having been trained for quite some time by Gō Koga, Cain was decently skilled in close-quarters combat.[1]

Enhanced Strength: After training with Koga, Cain was strong enough to break a wooden training dummy in half with a single punch.[1]

Doll[]

Main article: Waineton

Waineton

Cain's Doll, Waineton, in both forms.

Waineton (ワイネトン, Waineton) was Cain's Doll. Originally taking the form of a small, green, bean-shaped creature, the true form of Waineton was a large, monstrous-looking praying mantis with huge talons. The power of Waineton is unknown; when Cain first summoned her, Waineton was fatigued and declined to show her power to Cain, eventually revealing her true form and turning on him with lethal results upon realizing that he lacked the proper power, training, and fortitude to command her.[1]

Quotes[]

  • (To Gō Koga) "I feel the same way as you about being alone. Spending time with a fellow Bount is the last thing I want! Especially with you!"[1]
  • (To Koga) "Y'know, it's kinda funny. I really wanna thank you. I realize now being brought to you was a good thing for me. Up until that day I first came to you, I was living a kind of life that I'm ashamed to even think about now. And even after I came here, I know that I wasn't very appreciative."[1]
  • (To Koga) "I am a chosen Human! I am a Bount!"[1]
  • (To Koga) "When I'm done training? Well, I really wanna be like you. Also, if you'll let me, I'd like to stay here and live with you. I've learned from you how to enjoy training my body, and cooking, and washing clothes, and...well, the cleaning isn't so much fun, but I realize that these are all good things to know about and do! For the first time, I feel like I'm alive!"[1]
  • (To Koga) "Master, look! I finally have a Doll of my own! Look at her! Look at how small and beautiful she is! Just watch this now - I'm going to give her some orders, and she'll obey!"[1]
  • (To Koga) "No, I can do it, it'll be alright! All I have to do is speak to her kindly like this, and I'm sure she'll respond!"[1]
  • (To Koga) "Master...Master, what's happening? I'm not ready to die yet..."[1]
