Keeping the Old Traditions is a tricky, emote-based side quest in Diablo 4similar to the “Secret of the Spring” quest in Fractured Peaks. This one takes place in the Dry Steppes region, specifically in The Untamed Scarps, and will once again ask you to puzzle out a riddle rather than smashing stuff with your hammer/spells/knives/claws/blood. Keep in mind that all side content — especially side quests — are easier to complete once you’ve unlocked the horse.

In this Diablo 4 guide, we’ll show you where to find the “Keeping the Old Traditions” side quest and how to solve its mysterious riddle.

Where is the ‘Keeping the Old Traditions’ quest?

You’ll find the “Keeping the Old Traditions” side quest just northeast of the Jirandai Waypoint, and to the north of the Champion’s Demise dungeon.

Follow the path north from the small town or from the dungeon and you’ll eventually come across a cliff you can climb. At the top, you’ll see a book sitting open against some ruins. If you approach and click on the book you’ll get a riddle:

Though timeworn, you endure. Before your colorful, kin, I say: Yes, I keep our traditions!

Once you read the book, you’ll acquire the “Keeping the Old Traditions” side quest. This will also highlight an area on your map, which is where you’ll need to go in order to progress the quest.

This quest destination is very close, and just around the corner from where you pick up the book. If you need some help finding it, use the pin feature on your map. You’re looking for a big statue embedded in the wall.

How to solve the ‘Keeping the Old Traditions’ note’s riddle

Once you reach the statue for the Keeping the Old Traditions side quest, you’ll need to emote in front of it — just as you’ve done with several other side quests in Diablo 4.

The name of the emote you’ll need to use for this side quest is actually inside the riddle: Yes. The problem you might run into here is that the Yes emote might not be on your action wheel. If that’s the case, hit the customize button and assign it to one of your empty slots.

Once you have easy access to the emote, perform “Yes” in front of the statue. This will cause a treasure chest to appear nearby. Open it to complete the “Keeping the Old Traditions” side quest.
