Like every hospital, CURE Zambia needs power to keep its lights on and equipment running. Unfortunately, Zambia’s power grid is plagued by frequent unannounced interruptions and surges, which can damage expensive equipment. The hospital’s diesel backup generators are costly to run and do not generate enough electricity to fully power our world-class facility. Zambia does, however, have something to work with: lots of sunshine. Thanks to a USAID #ASHA grant, CURE Zambia recently invested in a state-of-the-art #microgrid that uses #solarpanels to generate energy and commercial-grade batteries to store it for use at night. This investment is already delivering dependable—and free—electricity to CURE Zambia, which allows more kids than ever to receive high-quality medical care and have the opportunity to hear the Gospel. We hope you enjoy this timelapse video and appreciate how much of an impact this investment is having on children across southern Africa.

Our hospitals in #Uganda, #Zimbabwe and #Niger have each recently added world-class surgeons to their medical teams. Collectively, these three surgeons will enable the CURE network to serve 1,000 more kids each year!   Dr. Kaleab Tesfaye Moges, a neurosurgeon from Ethiopia, was awarded the gold medal for best neurosurgery candidate at COSECSA | The College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa. At CURE Uganda, Dr. Moges will treat children suffering from life-threatening neurological conditions.   Dr. Sam Weston-Simons, a fellowship-trained pediatric orthopedic surgeon from the U.K., specializes in limb reconstruction. Dr. Weston-Simons volunteered at CURE Malawi during his medical training, and now he and his family will call Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, home.   Dr. Anthony Olasinde, a fellowship-trained pediatric orthopedic surgeon, brings years of experience to CURE Niger and will be instrumental in treating children with limb deformities.   Please help us welcome these three outstanding medical professionals to the CURE team!

Y... The Tebow CURE hospital in the Philippines is located in downtown #DavaoCity, the third-most populated city in the country. While Davao has a population of roughly 1.7 million people, only around 1.5% of the country’s population lives within city limits. Transportation is challenging in this region, but our hospital wanted to ensure high-quality medical care was available to children across the Philippines. How could it reach more kids?   The solution, of course, was partnership.   Our hospital launched a proactive partnership initiative to secure Memorandum of Agreements (MOAs) with regional health ministries to help communicate the availability of no-cost surgical care, identify potential new patients, and coordinate transportation to and from Tebow-CURE. Already, more than a dozen MOAs across the Philippines have been signed since January!   Earlier this year, Tebow-CURE signed an MOU with the city of #Malaybalay and conducted a mobile screening of 134 patients, 81 of whom qualified for treatment at the hospital. CURE is proud that its relationships around the world are leading to happy, healthy children.

At CURE International, we believe every child should have access to high-quality surgical care. That’s why we continually invest in medical training across the region to build and strengthen healthcare systems in developing countries. More doctors, nurses, and trained personnel are allowing more kids to grow up big and strong.   Recently, in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, CURE Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Sam West-Simons helped lead an intense training on limb reconstruction for over two dozen surgeons, nurses, and physical therapists from government hospitals based in #Zimbabwe, #Zambia, #Malawi, and even the #UnitedKingdom. These medical professionals learned how CURE utilizes Ilizarov and hexapod frames to aid limb reconstruction — allowing children to walk, run, play, and live normal lives. We’re grateful for our dedicated professionals, including Dr. West-Simons, for investing in global surgical capacity for the good of children everywhere.

Did you know that the University of Oxford and CURE Ethiopia have an ongoing partnership dating back to 2019?   Every quarter, Oxford researchers train and support our medical staff in Ethiopia who work in our Gait Lab — a specially designed room used to record patient motion via video and sensors. Thanks to this ongoing partnership between physicians from Oxford and CURE Ethiopia, complex mobility and walking problems are being identified and remedied each day.   As you can see below, our young patients benefit tremendously from this ongoing partnership with Oxford.
