Welcome to the greatest, most complete PS4 JRPG database on the interwebs brought to you by FatedAnarchy and myself. This is a multipurpose, moderator approved, list/newsletter/discussion thread for various types of JRPGs on the PlayStation 4 system that come out. This thread can be used for discussion on current and upcoming Japanese Role Playing Games for the PS4 of various subgenres. In addition, the thread acts as a newsletter and the OP will be updated monthly to feature new games in our spotlight section. We also need help expanding the list, so if you know of any Japanese Role Playing Games that aren't on the list, please feel free to suggest additions to the database. The first section will explain the differences between the different subgenres of the JRPG genre.

ARPG
Action JRPGs, or Action Japanese Role-Playing Games, are in a loosely defined subgenre of RPGs that prioritize active or real-time combat. These games usually give the player direct control over their character and revolve around various combat systems including (but not limited to) Hack N’ Slash and a melee/magic blend.
E.g, Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean, Ys, Dark Souls, Monster Hunter

Turn Based JRPG
Turn Based JRPGs have the player set within a particular timeframe in order to perform various actions. After the timeframe comes to an end, control is shifted over to another player or enemy in order for them to go through the same situation. There are some games in this subgenre that combine elements from active and turn/time based systems as well.
E.g, Dragon Quest, Pokemon, Persona, Suikoden

Tactical/Strategy Based JRPG
This subgenre typically forgoes traditional RPG systems in place of strategic gameplay that has the player planning tactical movements across isometric grids. Over the years, various gameplay elements have been added to the subgenre such as stealth and procedural generation.
E.g, Fire Emblem, Valkyria Chronicles

Visual Novel
Visual novels, or sound novels, feature mostly static graphics with gameplay based on clicking to keep text, graphics and sound going in order to continue the narrative. Most visual novels have more than one storyline and some also incorporate different elements like the playing of an instrument in Symphonic Rain.
E.g, Fate/Stay Night, Steins;Gate

When do you guys think I should post the Spider-Man thread? I haven’t done anything with it yet, but I could start it tomorrow and get it done by this time next week. I kind of want to have it posted early so that any more announcements will go directly to the thread.

Narrative, combat and exploration the three pillars of the franchise but Blow up exploration and make it a massive part of the franchise. Let’s celebrate and reward curiosity and discovery.

God of War makes its return to PS4 with the Cory Barlog led Sony Santa Monica taking the franchise in a new direction. Seemingly set many years after the ending for God of War 3, we are reintroduced to Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they embark on a new journey. Kratos must adapt to unfamiliar lands, unexpected threats, and a second chance at being a father. Together with his son Atreus, the pair will venture into the brutal Norse wilds and fight to fulfill a deeply personal quest.

God of War is SSM’s biggest game by far with over three hundred workers at their peak (along with additional support from two external teams). SSM is looking to God of War for recovery after troubled times, so this is not only uncharted territory for the franchise itself, but it is also carrying the weight of SSM’s future.

With the last God of War (Ascension) underwhelming on a critical and commercial level, Sony planned to put the franchise on hold. Cory actually had to pitch for another entry. While the IP has always performed well in the United States, it has not been able to reach similar results relative to the base in Europe. Sony and SSM hope to considerably expand the audience for the franchise by incorporating different elements to the base game, reworking the combat, and altering the narrative structure.

Cory Barlog left SSM around 2007 in the middle of development on God of War 3. Citing creative differences, Cory decided to leave and gather different influences in order to avoid rehashing the same experiences. One of those influences ended up being the mind behind Mad Max - director George Miller. Around April 2013, Cory would start thinking of joining Sony and SSM once again and what he would have to do for another God of War. He officially returned to Sony/SSM in July 2013, with a small team of about 12, in order to get started with the very early stages of development. He expected another year to prepare for pre-production, but was told that he actually had two weeks to get it together for pre-production and that everybody at SSM would be joining him. This major rush came from the new IP cancellation (read more here). Cory stated that this was a very rough period for him and that he lost a lot of sleep from that point up to now. In a way, the hopes of the studio and its future being placed, at least partially, on his shoulders. However, Cory also stated that he embraces challenges and hopes God of War will justify all the time and energy expended for it.

“Vicious, Physical Combat — With an intimate, over-the-shoulder free camera that brings the action closer than ever, combat in God of War is up close, frenetic, and unflinching. Kratos’ axe —powerful, magic and multifaceted – is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration”

God of War gameplay will revolve around combat, puzzle solving, and exploration.

Combat - The combat has received a dramatic rework. The camera is over the shoulder and it follows Kratos’ actions closely. You now use an ax (imbued with magic properties) and shield to dish out weighty attacks that demolish foes. Atreus is a support character who aids you with ranged attacks and he is also upgradeable. In addition, you can choose whether to prioritize mobility or brute based combat. You can also equip different runes that give your ax different capabilities.

Puzzle Solving - A series staple returns with the new God of War. You will come across several variants of puzzles throughout the game. This includes language barriers that require translations, environmental challenges that tie into the continually evolving main hub world, and puzzles where Kratos uses his brawn to brute force his way through.

Exploration - Exploration has been considerably expanded from the previous games. Going hand in hand with the more open, intricate environment and level design, the player can be rewarded for their curiosity and encounter optional bosses, high quality equipment, secret treasure, and new environments.

The following are a mix of general info and features of the game.

-

The world is hub based with open environments. It draws inspiration from the likes of Dark Souls and Tomb Raider in this regard. The level design weaves in and out of itself, and it has secret areas for those willing to explore.

In terms of exploration, SSM looked to Zelda as inspiration. While the game does not carry out the concept in the same way, the core philosophies behind exploration design can be found in the game.

-

There is an added progression system and RPG-lite elements.

-

There are four difficulty settings.

Give Me A Story: lets you experience the story without too much of a difficult gameplay challenge. You won’t be taking a gondola to the top of the highest peaks in all the Norse Realms, but you will have a far greater margin for error in enemy encounters.

Give Me A Balanced Experience: is the mode we’d recommend most players start with. The name says it all. We’ve tuned it to deliver a balanced, challenging playthrough.

Give Me A Challenge: is harder and less forgiving. It is recommended for players who find action games extremely intuitive, and for confident long-time God of War series veterans who’ve beat past games on harder difficulties.

Give Me God of War: is the sort of thing reserved for people who wrestle polar bears in their undies. Maybe not quite that, but it’s the most difficult mode in the game. We haven’t just made you weaker or enemies stronger; we’ve looked at enemy behaviors and placements in encounters as well, tweaking everything to make it as threatening as possible. Best of all, you cannot change difficulties once you start a game on this mode, so if you suddenly realize you’re in way over your head, you’ll have to start a new game. Don’t be sorry, be better?

-

The game comes with ‘Immersion Mode’ for the HUD

This will cut things down to just the minimal absolute necessary HUD elements. There’s no right or wrong way to play; you’ll certainly have a lot of helpful info close at hand if you’re playing with the HUD fully enabled. But for those fans who are sensitive to the HUD, or perhaps for folks who want to stream or capture and would prefer as little UI as possible, there you go. To enable Immersive UI, it’s as easy as going to the Settings menu, clicking HUD and switching HUD Mode to Immersive. Yes, that means you can toggle it on and off while you play!

In addition to this, we’ve added an extra mode that allows you to customize which of these HUD elements you want ON, OFF or enabled via the touch pad which brings up that element for a short duration. This will enable players to truly customize their experience by adjusting visibility to HUD elements like enemy health bars, compass and enemy off screen indicators.

-

The completion time for the main content seems to fall in the 20-30 hour range, and overall completion pushes that up to the 40-60 range. It also has ~50% optional content.

-

It has challenges like the previous games.

-

There will be button mapping.

-

There will no longer be QTEs in the game.

Older and weaker, Kratos returns somewhat withered from time. His seemingly limitless rage and vicious acts from the past now a shadow that he cannot escape. Kratos is concerned with living a life of solitude, but the circumstances force him to go on another journey.

yD9KzV3m.jpg

Kratos will still rely on his incredible power to rip his enemies to shreds and accomplish his goals, but now with a son along for the ride, he may take a step back to put who he was, and who is becoming now, into perspective.

Atreus is a young boy who will be following Kratos through their journey. He understands the language of the land far better than Kratos, so he will assist Kratos with communication and understanding.

Atreus will help Kratos realize his potential for something different, but he also has realizations of his own to discover.

"On our journey, we will be attacked by all manner of creature. To be effective in combat, a warrior must not feel for his enemy. Close your heart to their desperation, close your heart to their suffering. The road ahead is long and unforgiving, no place for a boy. You must be a warrior." — Kratos

Here is the review thread for God of War

http://www.ign.com/boards/threads/god-of-war-review-thread.455115685/

Easy Allies - 10/10
God of War doesn’t just feel like the next step for the franchise, but for the entire video game industry. Phenomenal visuals, rewarding exploration, and a deep, nuanced combat system contribute to an epic adventure that should be experienced by every human on earth. Santa Monica Studio is taking us all to Valhalla.

IGN - 10/10
I expected great action from God of War, and it delivers that handily. But I didn’t expect it to be a thrilling journey in which every aspect of it complements the others to form what is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s a game in which Kratos, a previously one-note character, becomes a complex father, warrior, and monster, embattled both on the field and within his own heart about how to treat his son; one in which the world opens up and shifts, offering rewards in both gameplay and knowledge of its lore that I treasured with each accomplishment. The obvious care that went into crafting its world, characters, and gameplay delivers by far the most stirring and memorable game in the series.

Polygon -10/10
God of War is, in a single word, holistic. Every aspect is excellent on its own, but more importantly, it all serves and accentuates the larger vision. Some die-hard fans may fear this isn’t really God of War. I suppose they’re right. It’s even better.
